Choi Re-Ups with LA

Source: ESPN

LOS ANGELES (AP) - The Los Angeles Dodgers re-signed first baseman Hee Seop Choi, avoiding arbitration.

The Dodgers and Choi agreed to a one-year deal for $725,000.

Choi came to the Dodgers from Florida in a July 2004 trade. He hit .253 last season and set career highs in games played (133), hits (81) and RBI (42) and matched his career best with 15 homers. In 363 games spanning five major league seasons, Choi has a .240 batting average and has hit 40 homers and driven in 120 runs.

This, of course, doesn't mean that he isn't still trade bait. I'm honestly not sure I want him, though; I really believe that Young is going to turn into a nice 1B/DH, and having two young lefties as First isn't going to do us any good... or is it?

Would the Dodgers want Javy? And what else would they send, because Choi certainly isn't enough.

Re: Young
Every scouting report I've read say Young's potential is a backup/injury fill in. His K/BB ratio is 3, and he needs to find a way to reduce that without losing power. His swing has too many holes that will be exploited inthe majors. To boot, he's not a good defender.

I'll admit I have not seen much of Young. I also don't know if all these reports are emanating from the same source. That could be, but the general expectation is he'll be a part time backup player.

I've read those too
But I've also watched him play in every one of his major league appearances, and what I've seen is a guy with a lot of potential. He is not going to be a great defender, but then again neither is David Ortiz.

Young does, indeed, have holes in his swing... he also is very, very patient at the plate and has explosive power on contact. He hits to all sides of the field, sits on the ball, and shows comfort at the plate. You are exactly right, he needs to find a way to cut down on strikeouts without losing power... and from what I saw in the minors he cut down the strikeouts dramatically, but still struggled to balance the average with power. If he can get that, then he may very well become a real force behind the plate as the major league level...
