Hey...

Who in the hell voted for John Maine in that poll?

Edit: Obviously, as expected, this has led to more John Maine support.

Poll
John Maine did.

Ha!
It was not me, I can assure you.  But the poll is interesting in that it shows that despite all the doom and gloom expressed on this board, we remain a hopeful bunch.  With the highest vote getters being Cabrera and Bedard, in that order, we can see that in our heart of hearts, the O's fans around here are hoping for the young pitching, that remains the best realistic chance of our emerging from the wilderness, to come out out and shine.

re:

Oh, wait 'til Opening Day - I can almost guarantee that unless all of our players are hurt in spring training I'm going to be talking weird mess about how the Orioles could maybe win 90 games if (A), (B), (C), (D), (E), (F) and (G) happen.

I think winter and the absence of the actual game makes me a little more doomy and gloomy than usual anyway.

Optimistic?
I had to vote for someone (but I did not pull the lever for Maine).

Anyhow, as for 2006, I think chats indicate we are entering the final phase of grief.
1. Numbness 2. Denial 3. Anger 4. Depression 5. Acceptance.

The horror show that was 2005 left as numb in October, and in denial that 2006 could be any worse. The Miggy outburst at first provoked anger, then depression. We seem to be entering the acceptance phase, with my personal impetus being the news that the O's resigned Newhan.

Now that...
...is what I call Holiday Cheer.

Oh, I'm all geared up for the holidays
I'm taking off the rest of the year, and I travel back to Baltimore tonight for a soon to come visit from Santa. The kid is bouncing off the wall with excitement. The family is healthy. What's not to be cheerful about?

The fact that the O's are shaping up to do the usual makes no difference in the grand scheme of things. And hey, at least I'm setting myself up for a pleasant surprise if they do much of anything.

Are you saying...
...that I'm going to be let down again for the 23rd consecutive season when the Orioles fail to win the World Series in 2006?

Small Victories
I'll settle for small victories. Like an 82-80 season with hope for beyond.

Well, at least you can remember a Series win. I even have faint memories of a second.

Well...
...I can barely remember winning the Series.  I was 7 years old at the time.  What I remember is being at a park and someone had a radio on listening to the game.  When they won it, everyone went absolutely buck wild and started jumping and screaming "The Orioles won the World Series...the Orioles won the World Series!!!".  It's amazing the (Orioles) magic a Series win will work on your childhood.  My entire life, despite not coming from a very avid baseball watching family, I've been able to name almost the entire 1983 lineup, and more importantly the whole 1983 starting rotation.

p.s.
That doesn' mean I'm the one. I voted for If_Anything_I_Could_Say_That_This_Cabrera.

Speaking of which...
...it looks like with the Mariners having picked up Washburn, the going rate on Millwood is quickly going south.

"Betting that the market for Millwood has started anew, the Rangers made Millwood a three-year offer worth more than $30 million, a source with knowledge of the negotiations said." the Dallas Morning News reported this morning.

NOW
the real question is, who in the hell voted for Hayden Penn? He's not even going to start this year, but then again that might make him the best
