Burnitz

Noooooooooooooo!!!!!

Rotoworld sums it up:

The Orioles are close to signing Jeromy Burnitz to a two-year deal worth $6 million per season, according to the Baltimore Sun.

What a remarkably bad idea. Maybe the worst of the winter so far, which is really saying something. Burnitz has had OPSs of 676, 786, 915 and 757 the last four years. His one good year was Coors Field aided, of course, and he had a road OPS of 775 that year. Burnitz turns 37 in April, so he's going to get worse, not better. As a one-year stopgap, he'd be tolerable. $12 million over two years is just flushing Peter Angelos' money down the toilet.

I cannot freaking believe this team.

big hurt
Larry, that's exactly what I thought.  Use that money to sign Thomas.  We already have a Burnitz like player on the roster, his name is Jay Gibbons.  We need high OBP players on our team.  Actually Burnitz reminds me of Tony Batista more than Gibbons.  He won't hit for average, doesn't get on base much, strikes out a lot, and will occassionally hit a homer but not enough to make him worthwhile.  Hopefully Burnitz won't ground into as many DPs as Batista.

WTF

That's precisely Jay Gibbons

Batista
"Gibbons doesn't strike out very much."

I don't think I said that, I said Batista strikes out alot.  I apologize if I wasn't clear.  Actually I'm not evey 100 percent sure that Batista strikes out a lot.  It's just my impression of him while he was the O's.  And I'm too lazy/don't care enough to look it up.

No, I know - I was just saying that Gibbons doesn't strike out very much.

actually no Mike
Gibbons due to his hot September manage to end the season with a respectable average.

Gibbons' average last season - .277
Burnitz's average last season - .258

That's almost a twenty point difference.

re
And yet Burnitz was on base more than Gibbons, so you know, big whoop already

burnitz
big whoop is right but you're the one who brought it up!

by birdman on Dec 29, 2005 12:20 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

so what?
that's only a little more than 1 hit a month.

by joet on Dec 29, 2005 10:25 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

so what?
yeah, i agree that's why I already said big whoop.  Look, my point is that Burnitz reminds me of Gibbons (and Batista even more so).  Gibbons had a slightly better average but we're splitting hairs at this point.  If you don't agree with my opinion burnitz/gibbons/batista analogy, then happy holidays.

Flusssh swirrrrrrl
I kinda like the idea of flushing Peter Angelos' money down the toilet.

I'm looking for a new team. The Devil Fishees' young players are interesting; maybe I'll become their one fan.

Flush?
Keep the Money; flush Angelos. Gibbons is a .270 plus hitter, Burnitz is .250. Tejada led the team and I think the league in GIDP's. Gibbons is 10 years younger than Burnitz and still can improve. Burnitz does have a career OBP of .351. At least Conine won't be the fulltime LF.

Burnitz sucks
and im not defending him, but BA is an over rated stat and 20 points isnt as big of a thing as youd think, just sayin.

Burnitz sucks?
His career OBP is .349; Tejadas' is .330 Lopez's is .340 Gibbons' is .315. The strike outs don't seem to matter all that much. ExCept for BA his numbers seen to match Tejadas' pretty well. Of course he is an out fielder so you might expect more power than a SS.

re:
Dude, he's 37 years old and put up a .258/.322/.435 line last year. He's also a complete non-factor against LHP. He also hasn't had a good non-Coors season since 2001. Burnitz sucks right now, and right now is all I'm concerned about.

Perhaps
I said that wrong, he sucks NOW not over his career. He has been declining but Coors hid it for a year. Yeah OBP of like 300 with 15 HR freaking yeah!

it's official
Burnitz is an Oriole now.  Terrible signing.  I could understand a one year deal but two is senseless.  The O's will regret this signing by the All-Star break.

Bigbie
The Orioles should have just kept Larry Bigbie last year, and we wouldn't have had to waste this money and time on Burnitz.  Even if Larry stunk, you would've had Markakis or one of the other young outfielders there to back him up.

Plus, Larry was one of the coolest guys to talk to.

by MiamiCane on Dec 29, 2005 2:41 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

We should have kept Larry,
and now we have what I consider the curse of Larry Bigbie, everythings falling apart more than usual. And Larry will hit 40 HR and bat 350 and OBP 400. Trust me. (And chances are he would replace Burnitz bat for cheaper actually, kinda sad.)

by Larry Bigbie3 on Dec 29, 2005 11:50 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Burnitz sucks
The only FA OFers with better numbers than Burnitz last year were Giles(OBP, BA) and Wilson(1 more HR and 1 more RBI)There just wasn't anything there, this year. Who do you prefer in LF  Newan and Conine or Burnitz? Any thing better would have required a trade and God forbid we let go of the cunning Canook.
