Gameday Thread: O's at Devil Rays

Daniel Cabrera, RH Scott Kazmir, RH (0-1, 13.50) (0-0, 1.80) 2B B Roberts LF C Crawford 3B M Mora SS J Lugo SS M Tejada RF A Huff RF S Sosa DH J Phelps DH R Palmeiro 1B T Lee C J Lopez 2B J Cantu 1B J Gibbons CF J Gathright CF L Matos C T Hall LF L Bigbie 3B A Gonzalez

Not that the D-Rays are the pushover they used to be, but they still aren't very good, and we've got to beat them and the Blue Jays this season to have any shot. Playing tough with the Yankees and Red Sox will only go so far. "Cheap" wins are a big part of any pennant or wild card race.

As I said before, this one could be a fun matchup or just a mess. I kind of expect more fun than mess. I'm interested in watching Kazmir against a team that just had 43 hits in three games at Yankee Stadium. I'm interested in seeing if Cabrera can control himself out there tonight.

Game starts at 7:15.

oooh
Sosa just hit a homer off the foul pole and they've called it foul.

Cabrera
More of the same from Danny so far...

Wow!  Nice play by Tejada helps minimize the damage (for now, at least).

Control
Three consecutive 3-0 counts...  ugh.

by Joltin Joe Orsulak on Apr 12, 2005 7:58 PM EDT reply actions

Cabrera's first inning
3 ER and bad baserunning from Tampa gets him out with just that. He went 3-0 on Lee (walk), Cantu (bouncing groundout) and Gathright (bouncing IF single - he is fast) all in a row.

Cabrera just looks like a headcase.

Pitching
And Kazmir starts Matos off with a four-pitch walk.  I get the feeling that this game could last about 4 hours.

by Joltin Joe Orsulak on Apr 12, 2005 8:07 PM EDT reply actions

whoops
I missed Gibbons's single, so Matos wasn't "starting off" -- but still, a single and a walk is not what the DRays want to start the inning after they take the lead.

Meanwhile, Roberts helps Kazmir out by swinging at a lot of stuff out of the strike zone.

Let's see how Melvin does... hanging tough although he's missed some hittable pitches... nice patience there.

No one on either team should swing until these guys prove they'll throw strikes consistently.

Mora
Great at-bat to work that walk. That was a lot of fouls. Three walks for Kazmir.

and
Kazmir rebounds to mix Tejader all kinds of up and get the K to escape with the bases loaded.

HERE COMES MORE CABRERA

Blah
It would be nice if Crawford didn't swing at ball four.

It didn't look like anyone answered the question on the story below but the game tomorrow night is indeed being carried by ESPN. If the regular network for the O's games doesn't carry it then you shouldn't get blacked out from it.

Sosa
HEY!  That's two home runs for Sosa :-)

Nice
Nice inning there from Cabrera -- he's working faster too.

Number four gives us a 4-3 lead. Woo.

Power
Maybe those 50 doubles last year were the start of something!

argh
More Mora striking out.

by Scott Christ on Apr 12, 2005 8:51 PM EDT reply actions

Please, Daniel
By all means, walk the bases loaded with one out for the top of the order.

Bauer's up for the second time tonight as Cabrera needs to nod his head at Ray Miller again.

Oh man
Not only is Parrish up but Sosa and Matos just made a mess.

Greetings from DRAYS BAY
Yeah, the stadium is not optimal. Its no Joe Robbie stadium though. To watch a game there, its called the head tilt. A stadium built for football.

So
We got "mess" instead of not tonight. 5-5 through five, three errors, bunch of deep pitch counts, some escaping jams. It's been an interesting one.

If they put Parrish in, I think everyone might go to sleep after suffering through Cabrera's lengthy at-bats for five.

SLOOOW
Just for comparison's sake, the Nats game started 20 minutes later, and they're already in the bottom of the seventh, while we're still in the top of the sixth.

Ugh
Kline's throwing in the bullpen.

Nice job from Williams tonight. Wonder if Mazzili is going to continue to use him in close games.

The Todd
If Steve Reed continues to stink, Todd will probably keep that role.

Alright!
Larry Barry drives in the go-ahead. I remember when I thought Fossum was going to be good.

BJ
Four straight balls . . . come on now, pitch!

by spetro on Apr 12, 2005 10:27 PM EDT reply actions

damn it
Great attempt by Matos but he might've been better off not jumping. Bad news.

by Scott Christ on Apr 12, 2005 10:37 PM EDT reply actions

Phelps walks
Nick Green pinch-runs. Worse news.

Sit down Cantu!
One out to go. BJ Ryan is an out away from earning all my confidence as the closer.

Lee Strikes Out
Where was that for the last 15 pitches?

by spetro on Apr 12, 2005 10:41 PM EDT reply actions

Cantu Strikes Out
Work fast. Throw strikes.

by spetro on Apr 12, 2005 10:43 PM EDT reply actions

Woo
Great job by BJ with the last three hitters. He's a closer alright.

by Scott Christ on Apr 12, 2005 10:44 PM EDT reply actions

YES!!
BJ Ryan, why you toy with me like that?
