The callup of Keith Reed shows exactly how barren the Orioles minors are, especially in regard to position players.
In terms of major league outfielders, we now have Bigbie, Gibbons, Newhan, and Surhoff available. Not exactly stellar. We definitely need another OF (or 2) on the big league roster. So what are our choices? Let's take a look:
The aforementioned Reed and his .267/.282/.480 line w/ 1 BB and 15 K.
Bobby Darula - a respectable .349/.400/.434 line, but he's 30 and has bounced between AA and AAA for 3 straight years.
Raines Jr. - .196/.262/.313 this year w/ a career .544 OPS in the majors. ugh.
Ramon Nivar - .125/.160/.125 super! great trade beatigan!
Napoleon Calzado has also been listed in RF in a few box scores. He is hitting .299/.333/.433 but is more often positioned at 3B, so his defense is probably even worse than Gibbons.
That's it for the Lynx. Ok, ok. Sometimes we like to skip Ottawa and pull people straight from Bowie, right? Remember Cabrera and Matos? So what can the Baysox offer?
Woody Cliffords - .280/.392/.380, age 24, has a career .763 OPS in the minors, never above AA
Jeff Inglin - .223/.348/.339, age 29
Cory Keylor - .200/.302/.253, age 25, 1st year at AA
Eugene Kingsale - .260/.339/.344, age 28, career .251/.307/.319 in the bigs
There really isn't much to choose from. Given the stats above, Reed might be the best choice. He is still young enough to turn into something and isn't having a hideous season like Raines. Or maybe you could ask Melvin to temporarily return to the outfield and call up Calzado to fill in at 3rd. Or do you call up Darula as a stopgap until Sosa returns?
I'm interested in what everyone else thinks. Post what move you would make in addition to the Reed call up in the comments. Also, post what two moves you would make if you are against the Reed call up.
