Around SBN: Chan Sung Jung Wins Thriller Over Dustin Poirier

Gameday Thread: O's at Red Sox, 06/02

Hayden Penn, RH Matt Clement, RH
     (0-0, 1.93) (6-0, 3.06)

Hayden Penn's starting at Fenway Park. This is not ideal, if you ask me.

Clement has been the ace of the Boston staff, every bit as good as ever and now that he's on a team that supports him, he wins and doesn't lose. Hey, go figure.

Game time is 1:05 on CSN and NESN.

A Real Test
Penn pitched well in his last start against the Tigers, but this will be a real test for the youngster.  In preseason, Penn and Chen were competing for the #5 spot on the rotation.  We will now see if is a starter in the near future, or if he needs more time.  I would say if he gives up 3 runs or less, this game was a good start.

Penn...
looked like he has good stuff, but was all over the place on Saturday.  The ERA was deceiving; he was in a lot of trouble most of the game.

Hopefully, he'll be a little more relaxed in a second start than in his first.

so...
do I leave work early and do work from home so I can catch the game?  decisions, decisions....

B-Rob
Anyone know the status on B-rob?  Let me know, I think we could use him today.

Sun reports
He's heading back to Bmore for an MRI.  Maz thinks he'll be out all weekend even if the MRI is A-OK.

I think I hear the sound ofr the air coming out of the Orioles' balloon.

Palmer
I liked Palmer as a pitcher (I just caught the end of his career) and when I met him he seemed like a nice enough guy, but he really wants to marry the Red Sox and have little Red Sox Palmer children.

top 6, 1 out, gomez batting
i'm "watching" on mlb gameday and wondering why surhoff didn't score on gomez's groundout.  was the infield in?

with fasano on deck, he should be going on contact.

by wetnap on Jun 2, 2005 3:07 PM EDT reply actions

it was hit sharply to gomez
surhoff would have been out by a mile

by intheRIC on Jun 2, 2005 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

penn out
decent outing for the youngster.  he's clearly not ready, but has some good stuff.  Most importantly, he's providing servicable innings during Bedard's injury.

by intheRIC on Jun 2, 2005 3:11 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah.
He got himself out of some jams, kept 'em in the game here.  He sure looks like he might be the real deal.

timely hitting seems to be the achilles heel of this team.  will be nice to get Javy, Roberts, Matos and back.

oh, by the way, Reed sucks.

Should have been routine, but Ortiz was out anyway.

I may have overreacted.  I'm "watching" Gamecast and as soon as "No out recorded" came up, I posted.

Maybe Todd will get us out of this.

What can you do? We fought hard, took the lead, had our best pitcher out there. It would have been terrific, though...

What I like about this team is that they've bounced back from so much tough luck recently. I'm sure they can do it again.

Still... argggghhhh.
