Burnett Trade Rumors, again

From today's Sun: (URL: http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/baseball/bal-sp.orioles13jul13,1,3238006.story?coll=bal-sports-he adlines)

"O's talking to Marlins about deal for Burnett
Julio likely would be part of any trade for pitcher

DETROIT - The Florida Marlins have talked to at least six teams, including the Orioles, in the past few days about trading starting pitcher A.J. Burnett, baseball sources confirmed yesterday.

The Orioles are apparently in the Burnett sweepstakes, which may be headed by the aggressive Chicago White Sox. Also showing interest are Toronto, San Diego and both Los Angeles teams.

The Marlins are looking to acquire a late-inning reliever, with the Orioles' Jorge Julio considered a key part of a potential deal.

The Orioles reportedly won't dangle starter Daniel Cabrera but would consider including 20-year-old Hayden Penn as part of a package for Burnett, a 28-year-old right-hander.

Burnett, who is 5-5 with a 3.33 ERA in 17 starts, is making $3.65 million in the final year of his contract. The Orioles likely would want to negotiate a long-term deal with him before making any trade.

With starters Josh Beckett and Ismael Valdez nearly ready to come off the disabled list, the Marlins have seven potential candidates for the rotation. Their bullpen, however, needs to be upgraded.

Sun staff writer Roch Kubatko contributed to this article." And another article (I won't quote it this time) discussing the Jays' hope for landing the big fish: http://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/baseball/marlins/sfl-burnet13jul13,0,7922163.story?coll=sfla-sports-marlins

Miami
Just read on Miami Herald's website that the White Sox are considered the most aggressive in their pursuit of Burnett.  Also it states that Burnett would really like to go to Toronto because his ex-pitching coach is there.  I say he needs to give Uncle Miller a try.

Marlins want Toronto's Chacin
According to the South Flordia Sun-Sentinel, Toronto is the current front-runner to sign Burnett.
The Marlins are known to covet Toronto's rookie left-hander Gustavo Chacin, and a major league source said Tuesday the Blue Jays would be willing to part with him in a deal for Burnett. The key would be getting Burnett signed to a contract extension during a 72-hour negotiating window.

"If [Toronto] could sign Burnett, the deal would get done now," the source said.

That would suck, but if Toronto gets him, at least he doesn't go to the Yankees or Boston; that means they'd have to face him a couple of times each later this year. Of course, so would we.

Toronto would be stupid...
to give up Chacin for Burnett. Chacin is a 24 year old rookie who is pitching very well. Burnett is an excellent pitcher, but at most he nets them 2 or 3 more wins than Chacin over the second half of the season--and is their is no guarantee he will be any better than Chacin pitching in the AL.

Burnett got shelled again tonight....
From CNN/SI:
Burnett (5-6), who has been mentioned in numerous trade rumors over the past several weeks, did not help increase his trade value, surrendering a season-high six runs and six hits in five innings.

The hard-throwing righthander, who also walked four and threw just 47 of 86 pitches for strikes, has allowed 15 runs in 15 1/3 innings over his last three starts.

Sounds like Ponson to me.  ;P

re:
I would actually compare Burnett to Matt Clement. Neither of them are true aces, but if you give these guys offense, they are more than likely going to produce, and if we happen to make the postseason, we're going to need another power arm.

Bold Prediction
We are not going to get Burnett.

I've been following the trade rumors, and frankly other teams are willing to give up way more than us (and probably more than they should). Boston has agreed to Bronson Arroyo, and has waived the condition of a negotiating period. Toronto is willing to send Chacin. And lord only knows what the Yankees will be willing to do now that Wang and Pavano are on the DL. I wouldn't be shocked if they caved to the Fish's demands for Sheffield.

When the trade rumors first surfaced I thought Burnett to the Os could be a good deal for us, but at this point Florida is in the driver's seat because the market for front line pitching is so thin. Somebody is going to give up way too much for Burnett, and it won't be the Os.

I'm fine with that. I could care less if the guy ends up in Boston or New York, because he won't make those teams that much better given what they will have to give up in return. There is no one else on the market I think we should even consider, and that in a nutshell is the problem--this is a sellers market.

Hey, I kind of feel bad for Arroyo, imagine what a move to Florida would do to the sales of his recently released CD. I mean, do you think Marlins fans are going to pay to hear his rendition of "Dirty Water"?

Last off-season and now
This in my opinion is a very important point.  The O's need to determine a need and what would be a good deal, then not go beyond the situation.
The market last year for free agents, went crazy, it was the right thing to do to not "sell the farm" to buy one player.  Look at how most of those high priced players are doing today.
Harrington for Sosa was a good move, even though Sosa is useless, might change...but
IF we can get Burnett for julio/penn then ok, but if the market rises to more than that then the O's should pass

could throw in kline?
...or is his contract too high for florida?

obviously kline is doing nothing for us, but returning to NL might make a difference for him...the same change-of-scenery theory that applies to julio. the fish are looking for relievers.

Florida is not interested...
in taking our problems off our hands, when other teams are willing to give up way more than they should. The price for Burnett from the Os (given what other teams are offering) would be at least Cabrera and Julio. Not worth it.
