Around SBN: Raiders' GM Begins The Purge

GOODBYE, SID

Source: ESPN

YEAH

YEAH

YEAH

IT'S FREAKING PHIL NEVIN BUT I DON'T CARE

ADIOS YOU FAT SON OF A SON OF A GUN

I DON'T KNOW WHO IS STARTING TONIGHT

OH MY GOD OUR LONG NATIONAL NIGHTMARE IS OVER

I said at the break that the day Ponson is no longer an Oriole should be celebrated with great gusto. Crack open your boxes of wine and get funky in the streets, because Sidney Ponson is a San Diego Padre and by God it's a celebration.

Share your thoughts. Share your feelings. Share your memories, because that's what they are - memories. Sidney Ponson is gone.

And according to ESPN's Rumor Central, we're now shifting our attention to Jeff Weaver instead of AJ Burnett. Fine. Fine. Sidney Ponson is gone. I cannot believe it.

Update: Nevin, of course, has a partial no-trade clause, and Baltimore is one of the teams on his list. Buster Olney on ESPNews just said the Padres could play hardball with Nevin here and tell him that with Randa acquired from the Reds along with this deal, Xavier Nady is going to play first base and Nevin will be squeezed out. This helps us. Us being in contention also helps us. Come on, Phil. Do us a favor. Help US to help YOU. You will love our park!

YES!!!!!
Bye, bye Ponson. We are getting a player that could possibily be useful. But where will he play? Frst and foremost lets look at his splits (career):

Vs Right: .263/.327/.443
vs. left: .306/.392/.566

So Nevin has proven through out his career that he can mash lefties. But we are paying him too much and he has too much of a track record to be simply used in a platoon with Raffy and face lefties every 5 days. He can also play 3rd base, but Melvin is there. He could also play outfield. I think they should have him play 1st when a leftie is on the mound and haing him either DH/OF any other day. That means either Gibbons or Sosa will lose some playign time.

re:
Phil Nevin was born a DH and he will be a DH, I would bet, and occasionally will spell Raffy at first. If he hits (please, Phil, do us a solid) then Gibbons or Sosa losing playing time is fine by me.

look at the ESPN.com newsbit. Nevin has a no trade clause, he has to accept the deal

Hrm.
Looks like the Burnett deal is definitely dead, too. But Ponson is gone. I can live with that.

by CarrieIC on Jul 23, 2005 2:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I have to hink this indicates it's dead
The O's arent going to contimiue to pay for Ponson, as well as pick up salary for both Nevin and Lowell (there's an overpaid trio).

Other threads indicate that Burnett would not consider an extension. He's making a mistake. The boss has family in MD (Bowie, right?) and wanted to come back home. It looks like A.J. wants to go for the gusto in the free marke, and land in a foreign townt. This sounds like a rookie newlywed mistake to me.

Burnett deal *is* dead
According to Olney. Talks have stopped. It doesn't mean it won't happen, because with no one willing to take Lowell they might have to reassess their situation, but we've apparently moved on to targeting Weaver.

What a cock tease! They JUST changed that report. BASTARDS!

Come ooonnnnn Phil ... Baltimore is "Charm City," baby!

I know
I'm hoping since this is the second time they've tried to dump him he'll just say, "Fine," and move on. For the good of the Padres! They need Sidney Ponson.

We're all willing to risk looking like asses to get rid of Sidney.

Padres just got Joe Randa from Cincinnati for two minor leaguers, too. San Diego isn't screwing around.

Nevin will be good
Even with his power numbers down since the move to Petco, the guy has still been an RBI machine.  Yeah he's old and he's hurt a lot, but with Javy coming back, this is really gonna round out the lineup nicely.  As long as Mazzilli remembers to drop Sosa way to the bottom of the lineup.

off-topic
Casey Blake of the Indians is on ESPNews right now and I'm pretty sure he's stoned.

Why wouldn't Nevin want to come to Baltimore?
It's a cool city. Very devoted baseball fans. Beautiful stadium. Team full of cool people. Relaxed clubhouse. In contention in the division. Tasty crabcakes. AJ, you should be listening to this too.

re:
He's a SoCal guy and likes being close to home, I think. Padres people say he has a 'tude.
