Newhan on Ottawa

"He said he doesn't like the city, doesn't like the stadium, doesn't like the fans."

This from CSN's Brent Harris discussing Surhoff's return from the DL and Newhan's subsequent demotion to Ottawa.

Considering Newhan is 31 years old and hitting .198 with a .564 OPS, maybe he should be happy he hasn't been sent home.

Edit
To be totally fair, I saw Newhan's comments in the post-game report and he basically seems mostly concerned with being away from his family. He said he'd rather be in Bowie or Frederick. He also seems like he wants to be traded. I don't know who he thinks is going to trade for him, but that's another story.

Talking out of his butt.
I think maybe he was just saying that... kind of a 'not thinking' kinda thing.  Probably pretty frustrated with his playing time and the way the team is playing right now.  I wouldn't read too much into it.

So Trade him, he has some value
It is being reported that : A's have completed a deal with the Red Sox that would send reliever Chad Bradford to Boston in exchange for outfielder Jay Payton.
Does anyone not believe that Boston's front office wants to win the east and make the post season.  Jay, complained about playing time, so they did or are working on a change that may make them better.  What are we doing...sending him to AAA woohoo!

Update
Could we have not done, this exact trade except David instead of Jay?
What would it had gained us, maybe a quality reliever that does not have a name of Steve.

by DR common on Jul 8, 2005 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions

You must be kidding
Jay Payton was hitting .263 with 5 HR and 21 RBI in 133 at bats. Newhan was hitting .198 with 3 HR and 12 RBI in 116 at bats. Jay Payton could legitimately start in the OF for a lot of teams (just not the Red Sox), Newhan is lucky Ottawa will take him back. You have to trade quality to get quality, and Newhan is not quality. You can't expect to unload your problems on other teams in exchange for good players.

All quiet on the Oriole Front
Payton has been griping for months. Bradford is coming off back surgery and is a bit risky, but has been the A's set up man. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2005838
The other rumor is that the BoSox are talking to Atlanta for Danny Kolb as a possible closer. He's not top shelf, but better than what they have going now.

So yeah, the BoSox are making moves. Any tangible rumors from the O's? I see the same ol' here http://www.prosportsdaily.com/mlb/orioles/rumors.html (with no one even wanting Kline). This says the O's don't want to part with either Cabrera or Penn. Sooo, why would FL part with Burnett?

Clear thinking
I'm not a Boston Fan, I hate the Yanks
I love it when the spend to win fails.
But I spent 4 years in MN watching the twins, using the minors and picking up ok stuff on the side.  Baltimore can be better than that while not spending like the Yanks, but a change of scenery for a player could mean the difference.
Yea, no body is calling for Kline but maybe Colorado would trade Joe Kennedy for Kline.
An upgrade for us...not on paper but it is something.  Stop waiting and start making it happen.

That may well be true. How dreadful for Boston.

by Scott Christ on Jul 8, 2005 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Yea, Dreadful
Can you believe it, Boston wants to win the east, the bullpen pitching sucks, so lets try some things which won't hurt but could make it better.
Sometimes a change of scenery is all that is needed.
No, better yet lets just do nothing...ooooooh yea!

Who could blame him
it is Ottawa Canada. half the time the money isn't worth the paper it is printed on, did I mention it was Canada.

Who could blame them
Did we mention that this is David Newhan?

by howie14 on Jul 8, 2005 9:00 AM EDT up reply actions

I can blame him
He has a job doesn't he.  Fasano didn't have a job for a day, but you didn't hear him complaining.

Newhan SHOULD be traded
I don't care how he is playing, or whether he is a good utility man, or whatever... I have little respect for a guy who complains as much as Newhan does.

At his age, and as a professional athlete, I expect a little more sportsmanship and class. We should just get rid of him for a prospect... they'll cost less and be worth more.

re:
Who is going to trade a prospect for David Newhan?

by Scott Christ on Jul 7, 2005 11:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, I'll tell you...
The same kinda people who'd trade for Brett Boone. The kind of people who remember how well he played last year when he was an everyday player, and who think they could use a left handed bat (like the Marlins).

re:
The difference between Bret Boone and David Newhan is that Boone is a three-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove second baseman with two legitimately outstanding seasons to his name and a bunch of other pretty good ones, while David Newhan is a 31-year old outfielder/third baseman with no power and a couple of good months in his entire major league career.

I'm not saying no one will trade for Newhan, but you aren't going to get a prospect for him unless you are dealing with the Royals or something.

by Scott Christ on Jul 7, 2005 11:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Fair Enough
But all I'm saying is I'd dangle him and see who bites. I was surprised his name wasn't mentioned in the talks with Florida as a possible left handed bat, but maybe it really was and the media just didn't speak on it.

by therobotian on Jul 7, 2005 11:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I can understand his frustration...
especially given that it means less time with his infant son. He must be feeling a bit like a yo-yo. At the same time he's a pro, and should just keep his mouth shut. He could help himself a lot if he would just hit the damn ball more often.

It's not out of context....
Here's some more of the quote from this Washington Post article:
"Either trade me or someone that would allow me to play," said Newhan, who wasn't sure when he'd report to Ottawa.

"They really screwed up my break," Newhan said. "I'm not in a hurry to get to Ottawa that's for sure.

"That place is a mess and doesn't really deserve to be a [AAA] city at all. It's a terrible place to be at, terrible stadium, bad weather, bad fans, bad atmosphere. For me hopefully I'd be able to play in front of some other scouts. But no scouts are coming up to Canada to watch me play."

Wow, what a crybaby.

by zknower on Jul 8, 2005 12:49 AM EDT reply actions

well
He is right about one thing: No scouts are coming to watch him play.

by Scott Christ on Jul 8, 2005 1:38 AM EDT up reply actions

The truth
He could play every game at Yankee Stadium and no scouts are coming to watch him play.

by howie14 on Jul 8, 2005 8:58 AM EDT up reply actions

Preception Time:
The O's do need to trade him to show they are trying. This trade complete by Boston did what?
Alex Cora (SS) Traded From Cleveland (for SS Ramon Vazquez)
Preception and showing the players the front office wants to win
