Palmeiro loses 1B job

Source: AP (via Yahoo!)

Saw this last night after we were swept to Canada by Oakland. I was glad to see it. He hasn't done a thing since returning from his suspension, playing in only six games and going 2-for-22 with one RBI. Now he's not even considered the starter. The guy is a PR disaster. Personally, I think this is really what should be the final straw. Go ahead and release him. His work is more than done here.

If Palmeiro does decide to play next season, and there would be a few or more teams willing to take a low-risk chance on him, then best of luck to him. But he's of no use to this team now.

So far....
The chip are falling where they need to actually fall..
1- Sammy DL  Won't see him in Orange & Black anymore, Thank God!
2- Sir Shamu on the shelf for the rest of the year, and after last week's fun, maybe he's a non-bird after October too!
3- Raffy, the team embarrassment, and my take is that his steroid issues ruined this season, is now sitting and should be gone
4- Ray, Penn, Du Bose, Maine, Friere all active and getting playing time.
5- Mazilli gone...and hopefully Sam is hired
6- Rumors that Beattie is gone next week.
All of this should be a positive influence on the future. But then again, this is the Orioles!

Wow!
You sure are a glass half full kind of guy!

Where are you hearing the Beattie rumors? Gone next week, before his contract is up? Wow! Hadn't heard that.

Reports have been saying Beattie is out
These rumors were circulating right after Mazilli was fired. I have heard nothing concrete since then.

This is probably a different thread, but I know you've always espoused the idea that Raffy's drug bust was a major reason for the collapse. I never really bought into it. Do you really believe he was that integral to the clubhouse psyche? I would think the reaction to it would be "bummer, but it ain't gonna ruin what we have going". I'll admit I don't have anything to offer beyond wild speculation.

It just seems strange to me...
That about the time Raffy's charges went to arbitration the whole team started to suck together at once. Something really messed with their heads..and it has gotten worse. It's just my thoughts, but the timing was very suspicious.

raffy
I thought the media reported that the players didn't hear about the postive test until right before the official hearing.  Weren't the O's going tanking it before then?

oops
I meant official announcement not hearing.

If that were the case...
then they were not real competitors anyway, and something else would have gotten to them. I'm not too happy with Raffy, and his bust may have played some small part in the collapse, but the Os tanking has more facets than the finest cut diamonds. Mazzilli deserves a good amount of blame, Ponson does too. So does a front office that decided their rotation was "good enough" as configured during the off season.

Beattie
Any additional info on Beattie?  I hadn't heard that yet.

The Beattie Rumor....
I am a member over at Orioles Hangout.
One of the guys there...his name is Earl...he had the Maz firing like two hours or more before it was news...anyway he said last week, without naming sources..that Beattie is Gone on Sept 1.
So, take it as it is..the guy had Maz right...the whole board over there is awaiting to see if the
Beatie story is right too.

Just seems weird...
why "fire" the guy when his contract is up anyway? And why Sept. 1st? None of this strikes me as Angelos' style.

i totally agree
even the people that angelos hated, he didn't fire until the end of season.

But the Maz firing...
broke that mold. Let's just wait and see. Could be nothing.

Maz...
Once the decision to fire Mazilli was made he was fired, pronto. Angelos didn't decide to fire him, and then leave him dangling for months. And the Mazilli situation was so bad that it was pretty much an untenable situation--the guy was practically begging to be put out of his misery. My guess is that if Beattie is let go (80% chance he will be), it will be just be a case of not having his contract renewed. But as you say, let's wait and see. Tomorrow is September first.

At least he hits line drives occasionally!
