Camden Yards Jumbotron Undermines the Team

You know, I think those stupid cheers that get played on the jumbotron and PA system at Camden Yards are beyond lame. "LETS GO O's" has no poetry to it, and "O-eee-O" seems like its ripped off the Braves or something. That said, we could have used those lame cheers on Sunday afternoon as the Orioles were getting blown out 9-3 en route to a sweep by the Red Sox.

I went to the game with my wife, who, despite all her other wonderful qualities, is a Red Sox fan. But as far as Red Sox fans go, she is a good one. She sits quietly through the game, doesn't cheer much for her team, doesn't rub in in when the Orioles get blown out, and brings me snacks. I wish the other Red Sox fans would be so well behaved when they come to Oriole Park.

But no, I have to sit through nine innings of "Lets Go Red Sox" chanted in my ear over and over again, not to mention they way the stadium goes nuts whenever OUR team gets hit up for more runs. My only counter to this onslaught of cheering Massholes is to boo. And I hate having to boo, because then it seems like I'm booing the Orioles, when I am, in fact, booing the Massholes. And while I have been known to boo my own team on occasion, its not something I take lightly and its not something I like to do.

This is where the stupid cheers on the jumbotron should have stepped up. Late in the game, when the team is getting its ass handed to them and the stadium is 3/4 full of gleeful, drunken Red Sox fans, and those Orioles fans who remain are there out of some twisted sense of loyalty to the home - thats the time when the home team could really use some back up. When our guy is up at bat, and the Massholes are chanting "Lets Go Red Sox", would it have killed the jumbotron people to throw up the stupid "LET GO O's" cheer?

Well, not once durring the entire game did they play the "LETS GO O's". Red Sox cheers went unanswered, and our team on the field probably felt like they were in Fenway Park for all the crowd support they were able to muster.

But the worst part was right before the 8th inning, when the jumbotron decided to show a highlight of the 1978 pennant fight between the Red Sox and the Yankees. They showed the Red Sox winning a game, and the Massholes went nuts.

That's BS. They've handed over the stadium to the Red Sox fans at the expense of the loyal locals. What they should have shown is a clip of some game with the Orioles beating up on the Red Sox, or a clip of Bill Buckner, or something that says "Hey Red Sox fans, this ain't Fenway South. Sit down and be quiet." Us beleaguered O's fans would have appreciated that. As would the team, I'm sure.

Anyway, its pretty pathetic that the Orioles have sold out their home team fans just to cash in some dollars from Massachusetts. Its no longer fun to be an Orioles fan at a Red Sox game - not just because of the losing - but because most of the stadium is rooting for the other team.

It just ain't right. I want my stadium back.

Well when we start winning our fans
Might fill those seats but until then we have to deal with it. I went to Friday nights game and out of the 46K that were there I thing 30K+ were Red sox fans and the only thing the O's could do to try and quite the Nation down was to show the Yankees score on the jumbo tron. I love the fact that Red sox fans love their team so much that they follow them everywhere, I know some will say because they can't get tickets to Fenway, but I say it for the love of their team. After living in the NE for about 5 years those fans really care for their team and the owners pay them back by getting good players years after year. I wish the O's would take a lesson on that, How many years did the O's sell out almost every game?  But we still didn't get the players. To be fair we did go after some players and they either got hurt (Bell / Davis) or just plain ol suck after we got them (Davis/ and a endless list) the O's also made some stupid moves along the way as well ( brady Anderson over Steve Finley, No keep Curt Schilling, Mike Moose M., Not going after Roger C, Randy Johnson instead the O's pinned their hopes on players like Sindey and Scott E.

I know I'm just ranting, but I loved the fact the Palmer was rolling in the press box this weekend over all the Sox fans at the game. Maybe the O's should think about putting a team out there that can win.

PS Yankees are coming this week I bet we'll see 85 / 15 Yankees in the stands

Yeah, I don't even go to Yankee games at the Yard anymore, they are so intollerable. Red Sox fans are unpleasent enough, but Yankee fans need to be shot.

Camden Yards needs a organ - just say no to crappy 80s music.

The money....
coming in from Boston and NY fans is helping this franchise stay afloat. It's not the Red Sox and Yankees fans fault that the Orioles stink and no one in Baltimore cares anymore. And why shouldn't fans who care enough to travel long distances to see their team play get a little boisterous? As long as they obey the law, don't start fist fights, etc. they should do what they want. It's a shame there aren't many Os fans around, and the team can't play well enough to shut them up, but again that's hardly their fault.

And I can hardly see why the Red Sox fans went nuts over a 1978 pennant fight clip--maybe they forgot how that one turned out for them. Anyway, the whole thing is just silly, what are the Orioles gonna do? Have Bucky F---ing Dent throw out the first pitch to remind Red Sox fans of a long ago defeat at the hands of another team? If these guys are coming to Baltimore and spending money, the club should treat them with respect.

I just hope the Orioles spend some of the money coming in from Boston and NY fans on free agents this winter--if any will come.

re:
Oriole fans don't want to hear it they should probably, like, come to the game.  Meanwhile the Orioles probably aren't interested in alienating the people who actually do come.

as far
the original comment about how the O's cater to the Red Sox fans, yeah that stinks.  you shouldn't antagonize the sox fans by showing replaying the bucky dent home run but a few more "let's go o's" on the jumbotron would be nice.

and i think rebop is right, as long as the obey the law, they can do whatever they want although we still reserve the right to call them obnoxious.

I guess...
I'd probably be more worked up about this if the Orioles were actually in the race, and Camden Yards turned into Fenway South. It bugged me more at the beginning of the season when the Os were in first.

But at this point, I can't really blame the Os fans for staying away, or the Sox fans for showing up, or even the Os management for tossing the BoSox fans a bone on the jumbotron. There's no reason to make visiting fans feel unwelcome. Last time I was at Fenway, the answer to their trivia question was Jim Palmer. I didn't hear Sox fans complaining about it, and it sure as heck didn't keep the Sox fans from cheering for their team.

I've spoken to a lot of Sox fans up here who have visited the Yard, and they all note how nice (and clean) the stadium is, and how the people of Baltimore are really nice and treat them with respect. I don't want to see those things change--just the Os record (and once that happens more Os fans will come).

Let's face it
The Yankees and Red Sox fan are the reason we have all the money we do to blow on players like Ponson and Steve Kline.

This stuff is cyclical
Old timers here in Boston will tell you that quite a few Yankees caps were prevalent through the 50' and 60's. It was really the '67 season that started rekindling the Sox fans, but it has never been this intense (which is why I personally want to see it come crashing down). Some of the old timers even admit they were Baltimore fans because the O's rocked when they were growing up.

Put a friggin winning team on the field and fans in black and orange will deluge the Yard. Just like old times.
