The Sun on Matsuzaka
According to Jeff Zrebiec, the price to have negotiations with Daisuke Matsuzaka could go as high as $30 million. His contract (he's represented by Scott Boras, oh boy!) could go as high as $70 million.
I know this guy was lights-out in Japan and the WBC, but - $100 million to land him? Is he worth it?

re:
As I understand it, if the winning bidder can't reach a deal, the money is returned. I'd really like to see the O's outbid everyone for the contract, then let Boras and Angelos negotiate. The entertainment value would be tremendous, and you know Big Pete would get his money back. It might also do one of the following
(1) Occupy Angelos while Duquette and Flanagan conduct business.
Or (more likely)
(2) Further constipate the FO system so nothing is accomplished.
Given that Angelos will be an obstruction if he isn't otherwise preoccupied, why not give it a try and hope for (1)? And for those who think I'm overreacting about obstructionism, recall that the Sun reported a month or so back that Angelos was not going to give the front office a budget, as he'd prefer to work on a case-by-case basis. I don't know if that is true, but I'm a believer.

bidding
From what I've heard from other people, if the wining bidder can't negotiate a deal with Matsuzaka, then the Japanese team has the option of rewarding Matsuzaka's rights to the 2nd winning bidder in order to prevent insincere bids.
