Non-tendered Orioles

David Newhan was non-tendered. And now I do the dance of joy. Newhan is a horseshit player who, at times, flashed a horseshit attitude. He seemed to believe that he was a real veteran of the big leagues, here to lead these wack ass youngsters like Melvin Mora to the promised land. I never particularly understood Newhan, and I never particularly cared for him except for that period where he hit .400. He went in the turlet soon after, and that should have been it for him. Instead we decided we needed to see two more years of the second half of his first stint before we could go, "Oh wait, this guy isn't very good." Or do you think someone caught on to the fact that he's not 25? It would not shock me if I found out that Flanagan thought Newhan was seven or eight years younger than he actually is.

To be nice about Newhan, though, there were also times when it seemed like he would do anything to help out. And I cannot fault a player for wanting to get into the game.

Aaron Rakers was non-tendered. I had a Free Aaron Rakers thing going on for a while, but I'm not at all upset about this. Rakers had great numbers in the minors and very well might still catch on somewhere and I could see him being good or getting killed, because a guy with a marginal fastball and a great splitter is always one little thing away from being a shitty pitcher, and that little thing is the splitter going from great to good, or perhaps worse.

I will root for Rakers because he was passed over countless times for guys with The Live Arm that had control issues, no change of pace stuff, or were just plain not any good at all, but the Orioles are now in the business of paying for their bullpen, so it's hard to see where Rakers was going to fit in. We didn't much need to continue rehabbing a 30-year old guy that has never had major league success, even if it is in fact not his fault that it happened that way. Did we need a righty BEFORE Bradford and Baez?

So good luck, Aaron, and best wishes.

The Todd is gone
The Todd is gone away
The Todd is gone, baby
The Todd is gone away
You know you done The Todd wrong, baby
And you'll be sorry someday

The Todd is gone
It's gone away from me
The Todd is gone, baby
It's gone away from me
Although The Todd'll still live on
But so lonely he'll be

The Todd is gone
He's gone away for good
Oh, The Todd is gone, baby
Baby, he's gone away for good
Someday he knows The Todd'll be over it all, baby
Just like The Todd knows a man should

You know The Todd's free, free now, baby
The Todd's free from your spell
The Todd's free, free now
The Todd's free from your spell
And now that it's over
All The Todd can do is wish you well

Newhan
Being a little hard on Newhan aren't you?  He was a bench player.  He only started regularly due to injuries.  I don't remember anyone ever asking him to be a savior at several different positions.  I know he had a down year last year but I think you would be hard-pressed to find a bench guy that performed as well as Newhan in '04 and the first part of last year.

Damn...is my man-crush on Newhan showing again?

So long, Newhan, you total jackass
Who can forget:
That place is a mess and really doesn't deserve to be a Triple-A city at all. It's just a terrible place to be at. Terrible stadium, bad weather, bad fans, bad atmosphere, going through customs. Hopefully I can play in front of some other scouts and somebody will make a move and I'll get a chance to play again.

C'mon now...
I don't blame anyone for not wanting to play baseball in Canada with all of those God-less Canadians.

Oh, and for more fun Newhan quotes,
such as, "They really screwed up my break",

see this thread and this WaPo article.

See you later, craptastic man.

I still don't...
see where the problem lies?  He's not going Steve Kline on anyone.  You are probably right though...Chris Gomez is the greatest player to every play the game.

Newhan wishes he was as useful a malcontent at Kline.

i don't think...
anyone was comapring newhan to anyone, but he's just not that good and when someone can be cast off from a not very good team, it sepaks volumes about their abilities and attitude.

Yeah
Or post the whole thing as a diary entry or something. If its really that interesting it's worth the time it takes to upload the pics.

I am loving...
...that I'll see no more of Todd Williams, aka The Ted Williams of turning IBB into Hits, in an Orioles uniform!  I also read that Tampa Bay has an interest in him, and I am salivating at the thought of our own lineup knocking the hell out of The Todd several times a year!

by Jonnypops on Dec 13, 2006 1:17 PM EST reply actions

It doesn't work that way
You know he'll be a godlike superman for another team, just to grind our gears. And Newhan will get on the juice and hit like 20 homers, just like Eric Byrnes did.

yeah!
He was slightly worse than Danys Baez in a tougher league this year, but $19 million for him because he got some SAVES to go along with his mediocrity.

Right
This is the same argument you made to me, in earnest, as to why it's okay to pay $19 Million for Baez.

no I know
I'm just defending my bro, The Todd. Lay off, dude. It's a sad day for his friends and family, e.g. me.

Not to be insensitive...
...but I had many a hard day watching him pitch.  It's time to celebrate!

Todd...
It wasn't Todd's ERA that I had a problem with; it was the friggin inherited runners that he allowed to score.  He seemed to just want to clear the bases as soon as he got in and then get guys out.
momma take a look now at what your boy has done; he's walking around like he's number one; he went downtown and bought him a gun.
