I'm putting a disclaimer at the top here: I know Benson has only had two starts. I know that is a ridiculously small sample size. I still want to discuss them.
It seems that Benson is doing unexpectedly well so far, despite the whirlwind of divorce/no-divorce rumors, moving from AL to NL, and moving from a pitcher's paradise to a hitter's park. Both of his first two starts were well above average, even if he took a tough-luck loss the first time out.
When we traded for Benson, I figured A) He'd be better than Ponson, B) He provided a convenient way to rid ourselves of Julio and C) He was somewhat of a veteran compared to our younger staff. But I didn't expect him to be an anchor or a stopper like the FO was billing him, and like he has been in this very young season.
So what does everyone think? Is this a good sign of things to come? Is Benson a textbook case of unfulfilled potential that Mazzone can bring to the fore? Or is this just two starts that we shouldn't read very much into at all?
