Rivera to test market, Pettitte and Posada not sure

Per ESPN

I've gotta think the Yanks will hold onto Pettitte and Posada and throw all the money in the world at Rivera, but maybe I'm wrong. It wouldn't be the first time Pettitte's left the Bronx and maybe he, Posada and Rivera will skip town to make a statement about Torre's allegedly imminent demise.

And don't forget A-Rod...

So if A-Rod, Pettitte, Posada, Rivera and Abreu are on the market, do we legitimately go after ANY of them?

I say no ... Rivera, Posada and A-Rod will get a world of money somewhere else, and Angelos won't pay the $$$ for some stupid pitcher who only applies his trade one out of five days (f-ing slackers!!!!). The only one we'd even have a shot at is Abreu and, frankly, ehh.

But we can dream, right? Imagine this lineup with A-Rod plugged in the middle and the rotation with Bedard, Pettitte and Guts...

On second thought, don't imagine it. It will never happen. We are the Orioles.

We'll probably end up with Tony Batista and Ramon Ortiz...

The ONLY one I would pay
is A-Rod. The rest are veterans on the backside of careers that most likely have 3 years or less left. Mo's, what, 38? Posda's well over 30 at a tough defensive position that eats its young, and Abreau doesn't solve anything by himself.

A-Rod, barring injury, is worth, in a bseball sense, whatever the market will bear, and I'd guess $25M per for 6-7 years.

My bet is he's a Cub if Cuban is in line to buy the teamn, or Artie Moreno finally pays someone in L.A. Guerrero's $75M deal is a steal, that doesn't count. It's practically below markety value.

Ditto
Pettitte should probably retire, Posada sticks around for another year, Abreu is over-rated in my book.  Dumptruck of money at the door of A-Rod.  Hell, at least he doesn't have to worry about choking in the playoffs here.

Sorry if I stole that last line from someone in the past week.

Rivera
He's 38, but he's never had real injury troubles and he's been used exceedingly safely by Torre over the years. He is not worth the money to pitch an inning for a bad team (so he's a "no" for us), but I could seriously imagine Mo Rivera pitching until he feels like stopping, and doing it well.

And I'd be stunned if A-Rod got as little as $25 million per year. Ichiro got that absurd $20 million/season contract, and A-Rod has Scott Boras to very astutely compare the general worth of having Alex Rodriguez as compared to $20 million Ichiro. He's getting $30 million clams a year, maybe more if a bidding war starts. Everyone will say up front that it's ridiculous and they won't pay it. Someone will pay it.

None of them.
They're all pieces you get when you're close. We're not close.

A-Rod isn't worth $30M a year. No player is, no matter how good he plays. And frankly, "barring injury" is a huge deal. Just because he hasn't been injured in the prime of his career doesn't mean he wont get injured in his 30s.

$30 million
It's tough for me to say "No player is worth (x)!" Well, how do I know that? Markets and major league payrolls evolve. There was once a time when they shit a brick over Catfish Hunter's contract.

The only thing no player is worth is a substantial percentage of your overall payroll if you don't know how to build a team. Ask the Texas Rangers. A-Rod at $30 mil has to be the team that can afford the hit. There are very few.

Pitching
The Orioles need to focus on finding a starter, a closer, and a setup man. I'd go for Rivera if the price was reasonable, but it won't be. A better approach would be to sign a bunch of guys who are not very highly valued right now to 1-year contracts. Throw them all up there in spring training and see who sticks.

Then trade Tejada for prospects and rebuild. The Orioles should have a goal of being a .500 team by 2009, and a playoff contender by 2010-2011. 2008 will be another losing season, and that's fine with me.
