Bedard negotiations stall

Per The Sun.

MacPhail stresses that

...the cooling of talks shouldn't be taken as a sign that the Orioles are ready to unload Bedard..."I'm not concerned," MacPhail said. "My experience tells me that this isn't unusual. I'd be hesitant to read too much into it."

However, even if the talks resume, MacPhail has to be keeping his eye out for Bedard trades....

The New York Yankees, New York Mets, Seattle Mariners, Los Angeles Angels and Los Angeles Dodgers all have inquired about Bedard, who would be one of the most coveted pitchers available in a market that also includes two-time American League Cy Young Award winner Johan Santana.

According to several industry sources, the Mets' offer for Bedard, which was rejected, included 21-year-old outfield prospect Carlos Gomez, reliever Aaron Heilman, 29, and a third player, believed to be right-handed starter Philip Humber, 24. Gomez, ranked as the Mets' third-best prospect by Baseball America, is clearly the headliner.

...The Orioles and Dodgers have also had discussions about Bedard. Center fielder Matt Kemp, reliever Jonathan Broxton and pitching prospect Clayton Kershaw are among the names discussed, sources say.

I love Bedard, but I'm really fine for trading him if we can get a package of three great guys.

In other news, "a team source said there was absolutely no way the Phillies would trade for Baltimore Orioles third baseman Melvin Mora.".

re:
The Santana deals are mentioning Hughes, Kennedy, Ellsbury, Lester, Bucholz for one year of Santana. Then two years of Bedard is worth more than that. And this is all the Mets offer up? That's laughable. They have to start with Milledge and throw in some more support. I don't see them as serious players here and I have to think MacPhail will drive a hard bargain as he has two years of Bedard to work with.

Hopefully the Dodgers and Angels talks are continuing. I'd rather he go there than either of the Yankees, but talk to them as well. Hell, push the same Ellsbury/Lester/Bucholz angle if things with the Angels/Dodgers stall.

Dodgers
If the Dodgers are serious they're our best option.  They have reams of MLB-ready young talent, with minimal service time, and they're also interested in Tejada (I think).  If we trade both Bedard and Tejada to the same team we can really loot them.  And that would be a fantastic start to true rebuilding.   All that would really be left is to trade Mora, Gibbons and Huff for some extra balls and infield dirt.

The Dodgers have some of the best infield dirt in the majors.

Not really. Santana throws 220 innings a year, is the same age as Bedard, and has, for four years, been either the best pitcher in baseball or in the discussion. Bedard is dominant when he's healthy, but he's a risk.

I think the Mets offer isn't good enough, too, but I'm not going to compare Erik Bedard to Johan Santana just yet, even with an added year.

Thanks for the time that you've given me...

"the more than that" referred to what the Mets were supposedly offering.

Santana vs. Bedard
It would be nice to have a Santana deal go down early in the meetings. It will likely involve a team like the Yanks overpaying for one year. Then I would hope we could get that much more for Bedard. I still would hate to see him go, but it really seems like the best for the team in the long run if we can pull the kind of package that's being discussed.

Mora
Ummm, has anyone made the Phillies aware that Melvin has really cute quintuplets (which I imagine their fans will boo and dump beer on whenever MelMo hits a slump)?

oh, yes...
besides the apocryphal booing of santa claus story and the rage-inducing beating of chief z, my favorite iggles fan moment has to be a few years back when they were in the nfc championship, leading and they started booing at something trivial...iggles fans.

I might be late
but Matt kemp is a great choice here, throw in Tejeda for a young pitcher and I'm happy

Good lord
I guess nobody could be surprised at this point, but that dumbbell Roch is actually advocating taking the Mets silly offer for Bedard.  SC, could you send your resume into The Sun?  The people of Baltimore deserve better than the likes of Roch clowning up their O's coverage.

mainstream media ain't for me
Fuck am I gonna talk about? Plus, I don't have a desire to rub my pen on a ballplayer's jock. I'm not saying I dislike all mainstream writers, because I don't. But jeez louise with some of these dopes.

Thanks for the time that you've given me...

trade
Yeah, that Mets package is very unimpressive.  Any deal for Bedard with the Mets needs to start with Gomez and F. Mart.

man,
my attempts to italicize anything always fail.

shortcut
... provided by the cc software:

put forward slashes in front and back of the text you want to italicize. So:

Petey is an /idiot/!

becomes

Petey is an idiot!

If you wanna go HTML, use <i> instead of .
