Around SBN: Jerry Sandusky's Wife Tries To Run A Reporter Over

Open Thread for Rumors 12/4

Since we're going to continue to hear all sorts of jazz throughout the day, let's just have a general spot to visit.

Bedard? Tejada? Santana? Bako?

You can put 'em all in here.

I'll kick it off....
...with the reason I put this thread up.

The Seattle Times thinks the Mariners are the best shot to land Bedard:

A Mariners bid to land Baltimore Orioles starter Erik Bedard remained very much alive as the second day of baseball's winter meetings drew to a close.

Seattle appears to be the best fit of any club when it comes to the missing pieces the Orioles would want in a trade for the 28-year-old left-hander. A lot of what happens next may depend on exactly how many pieces the Mariners are willing to hand over for a pitcher attracting plenty of interest as the Johan Santana sweepstakes winds down.

Mariners general manager Bill Bavasi declined to comment on talks with the Orioles, but insiders indicate the squad would dearly love to land him. The Orioles are thought to be seeking center fielder Adam Jones, pitcher Brandon Morrow and another arm or bat.

Whether or not the Mariners included Jones in their first offer is not entirely clear. But Orioles president Andy MacPhail said Tuesday that the initial offers he'd received were too low.

Z: Your selection of Brandon Fahey
for the Mitchell Report list was inspired. The only thing that could top it would be, well, Brandon Fahey appearing in the Mitchell Report. With an explanation of "really wanting to fill out [his] shirt" or something.

Re Bedard in the Pacific NW: I dunno. It sounds like Mac hasn't heard anything he likes the sound of yet: http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/baseball/bal-os1204,0,5598074.story

Well, OK. On the other hand, he's beginning to sound a little too much like Donald Rumsfeld, too:

"We think we have a pretty good understanding of what is equitable for certain guys and when we get there, great. Until we get there, we'll stay where we are. It's really a simple equation."

Lincecum for Markakis
I have not heard any talk about this at all -- my question is why haven't we?  Trade Tejada and Roberts for some young talent and then have Bedard, Lincecum and Guthrie to start off the rotation.  That's not a bad start.

by dj @ Camden Chat on Dec 5, 2007 1:49 PM EST reply actions

Lincecum should NOT be traded.
The Giants consider trade proposals at their own risk...the kid is going to be battling Peavy for the best pitcher in the NL in a couple years.

i am not an "industry source"
by i get a feeling we've seen the last interesting deal of the winter meetings.  as usual, mostly talk and not much action.  the Tigers-Marlins deal is even hung up right now pending medical evaluation.  i read Andrew Miller worked out at the Tigers facility this morning!  and Jim Bowden hasn't made a trade for 36 hours!

truth is, MacPhail is a methodical worker, and i could see this Bedard thing hanging over the team until the trade deadline, then starting all over in the off-season.  because, simply, there's no way in hell he's re-signing here.

as for Tejada, maybe we get renewed interest from the Angels or Dodgers if the Cabrera deal goes through.  the Dodgers sound like they don't want to move Kershaw, so would you take Kemp and Broxton for Tejada?  would they even back down and offer Ethier and Broxton?  would you take that?  without having a SS to come in?  honestly, if they could coax Kemp and Hu i'd jump.

SI.com says you're right.
John Heyman says there are many obstacles to a Bedard deal, and that Petey may be pushing MacPhail's buttons already. Heyman also says:
  1. That Bedard actually turned down a three-year offer. If this is true, then the Orioles are idiots. A three-year offer when you already control him for two? Kinda silly.
  2. The Dodgers reportedly have offered top outfield prospect Matt Kemp and superb reliever Jonathan Broxton, and if that's true, that deal should have been done yesterday. Kemp is a Dave Winfield in waiting, and Broxton is as talented as any reliever going. I disagree. We don't need relievers, no matter how talented, if we're building for 2009 and beyond. We need position players and starters.
Also, under the category of "a rumor for every team", the Reds have apparently joined the hunt for Bedard.

Could it have been a 3 year extension?
That would keep him here for 5 years and would make sense.

I don't like what I read in that article
about PA/McPhail.

At this point, if someone DOES
fit the cement Florsheims on him and give Petey the real intimate tour of the Inner Harbor, I have a feeling that, given various of my posts here over the last two years, Baltimore PD may want to talk with me. Like, in the first 5 min. after the body is discovered by divers.

Well, ha-ha-ha! Come over and get me, coppers! Yeah, you just go getchaseff an extradition order from the Russian government-- hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha, jeez, sorry, I have to wipe my glasses here -- and I'm all yours for questioning!

But be warned: I'll engage Alberto Gonzales as my defense attorney. He can get away with anything!

for Tejada?
I don't see the Dodgers giving up Kemp and Broxton for Miggi, but I would jump at it. We should be able to get more than that for Bedard, but two young major leaguers with high upside for Miggi sounds good to me.

reds just released cantu.  o's have spots on the 40 man.

Yes
your point? Cantu can't hit run or field, but he's pretty decent otherwise.

my point...
is he's available.  he's still pretty young, has decent pop and depth is not the organization's strong suit.

yeesh.  next time it's get in your co-ccers face day, please circulate the memo.

So, I said, uh, lama: how about a little something for the effort?

Career OPS+ of 98
and trending downwards dramatically, I just don't think he's any good.

But upon further review, I did come off a little strong on that one. No hostilies were intended. My apologies. :)

i guess my thought was...
he's still young enough to turn it around and the organization's middle infield depth is lacking.  mind you, i'm strictly talking about a minor league deal.

If the O's are right to ask a lot for Bedard (and I agree) and Olney is correct that no team is likely to step up, then next year the O's may face what the Twins face now with Santana. If the Santana deals falter because the Twins won't decrease their asking price, is it less likely that Bedard is moved? I think MacPhail will hold onto him.

It reminds me of the Twain short story: "The 1,000,000 Pound Bank-Note". A mining clerk finds himself penniless in London and handed a 1,000,000 pound bank note that he can't unload. He remains destitute because the only thing he has is a  million pound note that no one can or will honor.

seriously?  using a Mark Twain analogy for the Santana/Bedard situation?  brilliant!  are you an literature teacher?

re:
No special knowledge here. The literature stuff seems more like Titov's domain.

Twain is one author that I've read as much as possible, but I've forgotten plenty. A talent poor franchise (the O's)  with a (many) million dollar bargaining chip they can't (or won't) unload reminded me of that particular story.
