Jay Gibbons is a whiney bitch

Did anyone else read his load of shit in yesterday's Sun?  Here's an excerpt:

"They signed me and they said that we want you as our right fielder. Stuff happens. I'd rather have Nick Markakis on this team and be playing a different position. He helps our team out and he's a good guy. We need him. So I am fully fine with that. But I do think I still can play the field. It's just really not up to me."

That was more than enough for me, but he spewed yet more verbal diarrhea...

"I was asked to take ground balls in the offseason and I did it, and I was told I wasn't going to be playing first base anymore a week and a half into camp.  For whatever reason, a decision was made. I think it was probably made before spring training. Sure, I would have liked to have heads-up before I took six week of ground balls. But maybe they changed their minds, somewhere in between there, I don't know. It's out of my control."

And, lastly, this gem...

"I understand where they are coming from. I am not going to whine. I am in the big leagues and as long as I hit and we're winning, I am going to be happy."

Dear Jay,
You are a whiney-ass prima donna.  I hope you get traded.  You lost your job.  Nick is our right fielder and even on your best day you couldn't touch his brilliance.  Get the fuck over it and shut the fuck up!  I hate you.

Meh
I'm not up in arms about this, because honestly I don't think anything he said was particularly bitchy.

He wants to play the field, he realizes it's not happening. Maybe he shouldn't have talked about it for so long, but what about that really has you so mad? Especially the part where he says, "I understand where they are coming from ... I am in the big leagues and as long as I hit and we're winning, I am going to be happy."

I'd rather him have just kept his mouth shut I guess, but I'm sure if the team is playing well he'll be happy as the everyday DH.

I mean...
...it could be worse.  You really have to expect some level of discontent out of someone getting what is generally regarded as a demotion.  At least he's not like Rodrigo, i.e. a completely awful player who makes the team lose virtually every time he's in the game, but is so deluded that he thinks he deserves all the privileges of a functional player.

I don't think it's that bad.
I still hate Gibbons though.

Gibbons
I read the article. It's tough when you have two guys like Huff and Gibbons who besides being defensive liabilities aren't exactly offensive threats. It's gonna be hard to fit both of these guys into the lineup, but I think Gibbons should be happy that the O's are willing to pencil him in as a DH.

But, talk about a columnist taking creative license.

The opening graf of the article:
"While his clubhouse neighbors like Kevin Millar and Aubrey Huff often joke loudly with teammates on each side of him, Jay Gibbons rarely gets involved, aside from delivering a quick smirk or a barely-audible laugh."

This presupposes that the author is omniscient; omnipresent in the life of Jay Gibbons.

Maybe Gibbons isn't the most outgoing guy. Maybe the jokes that Huff and Millar just aren't funny. Maybe he had gas on the day that the reporter visited the clubhouse.

Simply, this is a dumb, presumptuous observation. It's editorialization that makes me shake my head in disgust.

yeah
Kevin Millar is a known big fat loudmouth. It's why people love him (unless they hate him).

And besides, we all know Gibbons is gonna get hurt and go away by July anyway.

Jay is a defensive liability
But I don't think what he had to say was that bad. Imagine you're in his position? The team signed him to a pretty nice extension, which you'd think translates into a steady job, and then he loses it to a young kid. Jay didn't say that Nick doesn't deserve to play RF, just that he wishes Nick played another position so that Jay would have some place to play. And that seems like a perfectly reasonable wish, even though it won't happen. As far as the 1B stuff, we're obviously not privy to the all the goings on of the team, but they did seem to stop it rather quickly, which seemed odd. I hadn't heard that he'd done horribly there in practice, the way we heard about Javy last year.

And I don't agree that Jay isn't an offensive threat, he just can't seem to stay healthy. He could be better than servicable if he'd just stay healthy, which I think he'd recognize as a reason to embrace the DH role. Though I certainly understand why guys don't want to do that. They play baseball, and it's fun! They don't want to give up half of the game.

I think you're all reading the quote wrong
They signed me and they said that we want you as our right fielder. Stuff happens. I'd rather have Nick Markakis on this team and be playing a different position. He helps our team out and he's a good guy. We need him. So I am fully fine with that.

He's not saying he wants Nick to be playing a different position. If he were, he'd have said "on this team and playing", not "on this team and be playing". The "be" refers to himself, Gibbons. He's saying, "rather than not have Nick on the team, I'd rather he was on the team and [I] be playing a different position."

In other words: play Nick, by all means, and play him in RF by all means ("So I am fully fine with that"). Just move me to a different position as opposed to DHing me.

It's actually a very gracious thing to say.

re:
Frankly, I wish Markakis could/would move to LF. He looked lost out here at times last year, but it sure would help with a lot of problems if he could move there.

I read somewhere this week
that Gibbons actually looked decent in left field. Not good mind you, but decent.

i thought...
he was decent in right, but it's just his lack of experience would tend to lead to injuries.

Decent in LF?

Gibbons
Truth be told, this is the second straight spring where the Orioles have gone into camp looking to convert someone to first base, given them minimal reps there, and tossed them aside, leaving them more or less without an actual position. Scott Hatteberg becoming a good first baseman didn't happen in a week, it took some serious work. And maybe Javy Lopez wasn't so gung-ho (I don't know), but I doubt Gibbons wasn't putting in the effort to learn 1B.

yeah
I mean, if you believe Moneyball (which i generally do in this case), the A's were committed that year to having Hatteberg be truly awful at first base if they could just get his bat into the lineup. Same reasoning behind using guys like Jeremy Giambi in preposterous outfield positions. Turns out Jeremy Giambi couldn't hit, either, but that's neither here nor there. Miraculously Hatteberg turned out to be above-average at 1B because he's fairly athletic and a hard-working dude.

I agree. I see no reason why Jay Gibbons couldn't at least be serviceable at first. And hell, platoon him with Millar at first if you want.

Gibbo for McAnulty
If they're going to play Payton in LF why not make this offer to the Pads, let Huff play 1B and McAnulty DH.  The kid could outhit Gibbo today, won't get hurt, and would be cheaper.

in the realm of stupid trades dreamed up by fans, you could do worse.
