Okajima ROY?
WOW AMA that was a shock for you to say that.

by BENNYBIRDMAN on Jul 10, 2007 7:28 AM EDT reply actions

The bigger shock for me...
was that he put Guts before Dice-K. I think he's sucking up to us ... he's up to SOMETHING, I just know it.

Dustin Pedroia...
is a legit ROY candidate too, so the list could have been all Red Sox.

by rebop on Jul 10, 2007 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Can someone
explain this whole Okajima thing to me?  I know his stats are excellent, that's not the question.  I've just never seen so many people getting so excited over a lefty setup reliever before.  Could it be, perhaps, that Matsuzaka, though good, has not always been the phenom the media crafted him to be, so people are sort of substituting another Japanese acquisition with outstanding (reliever) numbers in his stead?

by Jonnypops on Jul 10, 2007 8:22 AM EDT reply actions

Well
He's been superb.  He's pitched a lot of innings.  He's gotten people out in high-leverage spots.  His ERA is 0.83.  His nickname is Okey Dokey.  Matsuzaka is awesome too.  Guthrie is having a great season despite the wretched stench of his team.  Dustin Pedroia and Brendan Harris and Pat Neshek are also outstanding rookies.  BUT.  OKEY.  DOKEY.

by Awesome Mike Awesome on Jul 10, 2007 8:32 AM EDT up reply actions

do...
harris or pedroia actually qualify as rookies?  or delmon young?  they all have a lot of big league ups, but i'm too lazy to see how many of those are september ups.

what about willits?

by jq higgins on Jul 10, 2007 8:36 AM EDT up reply actions

sigh....
It does pain me to agree with AMA on anything, but Mr. Okey Dokey has been pretty damn awesome. I'm not saying he's a lock for ROY, but he's really been quite good so far. Off the top of my head right now, my top 3 for ROY at the moment might be :
Guthrie
Pedroia
Okajima

RE:
There is little argument for Pedroia or Matsuzaka at this point; so they need to go with Okijima.

The guy has been awesome...
43 IP with a .83 ERA, .83 WHIP and .161 BAA is very impressive. Part of it may be the surprise that everyone is talking about the Japanese pitcher that didn't sign for several billion dollars, but his first half performance was outstanding.

Reggie Willits - AL ROY
I can't remember the # of ABs to qualify but he should qualify before too long if he hasn't already.  Garrett Anderson being healthy is probably the only thing that would cut into his PT so I'd say it's a pretty safe bet that he'll stay with the big club.

231 AB
.312 BA
.408 OBP
.368 SLG
18 SB
39 R
25 RBI

re:
Hey, guys, when there is absolutely nothing to complain about, like say when a guy posts something like midseason awards with nothing but lists of players for the awards, can we not try to start completely pointless arguments just because the dude likes the Red Sox?

Thanks.

Okajima won't win the ROY
he's already got the problem of being a relief pitcher. He also is living on a prayer recently, and if the league gets a good scouting report around on him...let's say that his stuff isn't exactly amazing. You can only blow 86 MPH cheese past so many people before they start bopping homers.

Gotta say
Magglio beats A-Rod in my book for the mid-season MVP.  I think this argument is overblown for the most part, but Magglio's team is actually in contention.

by punkrawka on Jul 10, 2007 1:43 PM EDT reply actions

it's very close
It's worth considering that A-Rod is basically the only reason those losers aren't totally out of it. I don't think you can go wrong picking either guy, though they are clearly 1-2.

So Ripken...
shouldn't have gotten the MVP award in 1991 since the Orioles lost 95 games that year?

As far as I'm concerned MVP means "most valuable player" not "most valuable player on a team in contention." MVPoaTiC just doesn't have the same ring to it. As it is, A-Rod is the only thing keeping the Yankees from being...well us.

by rebop on Jul 10, 2007 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Like I said
I think the argument is overblown.  Ripken was hands-down the MVP that year.  Ordonez and A-Rod have VERY similar stats, so I think the performance of the team that the person plays for is a good tipping factor.
