BUH DARD

Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you the best pitcher in baseball. Erik Bedard is off his ass and I want to climb to the top of a mountain and shout about it. My boy is sick.

And I said it at the bottom of the game thread, but I'm on board with Dave Trembley. That's right! Utter positivity from yours truly. Thought maybe you might be sick of the pessimistic crap from me. I get sick of it, too, believe me.

Remember '05?
Remember when we scored lots of runs and our SPs were inadequate, and we bemoaned whether our young pitching would ever be what we hoped it was?  Oh, a mere two seasons later, we're bemoaning the fact that hitters actually age while young pitching truly does come to fruition.

Goddammit.  Here's to you, Bedard and Guthrie.

And this afternoon, the manager's acid test:
"Trachsel is 0-3 with a 9.13 ERA in his last five starts while allowing opponents to hit .394."

If Dave doesn't drop acid after the D-Bags have their once-weekly explosion all over him, we'll know we have a real hombre at the helm.

That's the signpost up ahead, your next stop: the Trembley Zone.

Hey Petey: enjoy THIS!

re:
Anyone read "Another Bullshit Night in Suck City"?

Trachsel's recent outings have been reminding me of that title.

The TWO days are the test
A 12:35 start today, the rain game to finish tomorrow and then the regular Friday game. If he gets through THAT without torching the bullpen, then I'll be a believer.

Please have a good start, Trax...
...so we can trade you next week.

Buh-Dard = AL CY
Ranks:

ERA: 5th
K's: 1st (by A LOT)
WHIP: 4th (who's first?  Some kid named Guthrie..)
OPPAVG: 2nd
K/9: 1st

He also has 10 W's for a team with a poor offense and a Win PCT in the Top Ten in the AL.

I hope someone on the voting committee looks at these stats.  This kid is sick.

Cy Young chances
In my opinion, here are the guys who have a realistic shot of winning the Cy Young:

Dan Haren, Johan Santana, Erik Bedard and Josh Beckett.

Guys like Lackey, Verlander and Escobar are close, but i dont see them winning it for various reasons.

Haren is by far the front runner right now because hes simply having the best overall year. He has a half a run ERA lead over the next closest guy (Guthrie). On top of that, he has a nice 11 wins. But his ERA has risen each consecutive month and he has a 4.81 ERA in July. I would imagine his ERA will be closer to 3 by the end of the year.

Johan Santana is Johan Santana. He had a rough start against Toronto last time out, but we all know hes going to go bananas the next 2 months like he always does.

Beckett leads the league with 13 wins in addition to all around great numbers. The most important factor is that hes the ace for the best team in baseball. A resume like that would get you the Cy Young 75% of the time.

dmouthhog has already discussed Bedard's fantastic numbers. Haren and Santana play for bad teams, so Bedard will likely get a pass on that. If Bedard keeps pitching lights out and keeps up with Beckett in the wins, I would say he has an excellent shot to win.

But can Bedard keep it up? None of us know. All I know is that Bedard has never pitched more than 200 innings and hes on pace for 226 right now.

Carmona
Thirteen wins, pretty good team with a very good offense, decent ERA.

If he outpaces Beckett for wins (say he wins 21 and Beckett "only" manages 19), he might sneak in. Wins are kind of useless, but voters are really big fans of wins. I could see it.

Though Beckett has the market and the name.

dude?
what about crooked cap sabathia?

by jq higgins on Jul 26, 2007 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Um yeah
Sabathia is definitely involved in the race.

Sabathia
He has a great 13-5 record, but his 3.70 ERA and 1.20 WHIP arent that great

by UMterp08 on Jul 26, 2007 12:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah?
well remember when bartolo colon (21w/3.48era/1.16whip) won it over santana (16w/2.87era/.97 whip)?

crooked cap's a WINNER!

(so the thinking would go, i'm guessing)

by jq higgins on Jul 26, 2007 12:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

exactly
Cy Young voters are dumb, and it's also true that Sabathia probably has a better shot than Carmona, what with the name recognition.

Completely forgot C-Sab

These numbers are a few starts old
But I can see JEREMY GUTHRIE on that list!  He stacks up pretty damn good, too.  And this list is from just after the start where he got lit up.

by PhilR8 on Jul 26, 2007 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not too old. ESPN stats are prety up to date.
They may be missing a game for a couple.

Anyhow, it is easy to argue that Beckett and Sabathia, who are probaly considered  two front runners (espcially on ESPN), are the worst of te bunch. Worst is relative here, but you know exactly what I'm saying.
