"Significant" trade talks between Cubs/O's invovling Jay Payton

http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/baseball/bal-osnotes0729,0,3821877.story?track=rss

If the deal is to happen, the O's would likely receive 2 midlevel prospects. The guys at mlbtraderumors.com speculate that one of the players could be Matt Murton. Doesnt make much sense for the Cubs, but I would be ecstatic if a deal like that were to happen. Both teams have made a ton of deals in the past and have a good relationship. Jay Payton sucks and I would be very happy to see him go.

amen, brother
Jay Payton could kiss my ass coming into town, and he can kiss my ass leaving it.

Murton
It's a little hard to believe Murton for Payton.

If it's not Murton, does this mean Fahey in LF again? Or would you rather have Gibbons butcher it?

Payton
I can't believe a team would give up two "midlevel" prospects for Payton but whatever.  I'm actually not that down on Payton.  I was hoping he could take over CF next year where his non-existent power wouldn't as much as a liability.

re:
Really? Why? Patterson is younger and has a .682 OPS with superior defense. I don't think Payton's .699 OPS is making up for that. Give me Corey every day. Payton's a mediocre (at best) center fielder and a shit bat, plus he's old and he's a dick. I'd give him up for a signed Murton bat. I'd give him up for a signed merkin.

Payton versus Patterson
"Really? Why?"

Because Payton is cheap.  As I've said before, if Patterson wants to sign a deal for 4th outfielder money, I wouldn't having him back.  But I'm guessing some team will view Corey's hot July and stellar defense and pay him starting money.  For 1 year at 4 million bucks, I'll take Payton in CF.

jay pay
amidst all the trade rumors revolving around jay payton, i just wanted to add my two cents worth about the matter - i think it would be good for the O's to keep him and frikkin' play him... when they do it seems to me they win.  Looks at his batting average..not bad, right? so he's a bit older than some, but who cares... so are some of the best representatives in baseball right now. he gives his best every day and produces in my opinion...maybe not in big blaring ways but in little things that add up to W's.  i'd also like to say that although he is kind of quiet which may be misinterpreted as a dick to you, you are wrong.  Payton is a fine human being (i know him personally)and is def not deserving of some of the crass comments here... and believe me, he's one of the good guys in baseball - if the O's trade him i say it'll be there loss and another team's gain.

p.s. also as fans of such a great sport, why do we have to always be so mean-spirited in commenting on players?? ...stick to giving your opinion on their job but not on their character - when you don't even know someone that doesn't make sense to me and supports the comment that  many athletes feel in saying most fans are idiots ...

Here's my answer....
also as fans of such a great sport, why do we have to always be so mean-spirited in commenting on players??

Because they are making MILLIONS of dollars to suck at the their jobs, while most of us barely make rent/mortgage doing the best we can at ours.

That's my thought, anyway.
