Tex to the ATL all but done: Fox Sports

Baltimore's favorite sports writer to hate Ken Rosenthal is reporting on FOXSports.com what we've been led to believe would happen all weekend: Maryland's own Mark Teixiera is heading to Atlanta to become a member of the Braves.

From his posting:

The deal is done, pending a review of the medical records of the players involved, according to major-league sources.

The Braves will receive Teixeira and left-handed reliever Ron Mahay.

The Rangers will receive catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Class A shortstop Elvis Andrus and two pitching prospects.

One of the prospects is believed to be Class AA left-hander Matt Harrison.

So he's a Brave, at least for the rest of this season, and possibly all of next season, if they don't trade him before his contract expires at the end of the 2008 season. He doesn't have the contractual right to demand a trade after the season, IIRC. So if Baltimore wants him, he will be a part of the 2009 Orioles at the earliest.

Update [2007-7-30 18:3:57 by duck]:It's done, for the package FOXSports reported.

Is that the offical description now?
'Cause I did use this attribution: Baltimore's favorite sports writer to hate

If it's officially pinhead, consider me duly chastised. :)

The details, according to SI.com
The deal sends Teixeira and reliever Ron Mahay to the Braves for top catching prospect Jarrod Saltalamacchia, shortstop prospect Elvis Andrus and two other prospects.

The trade is contingent on a review of medical records, according to sources. An announcement could come as early as tonight.

The sides reached a compromise agreement after Texas sought a substitute for pitching prospect Matt Harrison due to injury concerns. According to the Fort Wort Star-Telegram, the Braves have agreed to send pitching prospect Neftali Feliz and a player to be named later instead of Harrison.

The Braves are not expected to pursue a long-term contract with Teixeira, who is due to become a free agent after the 2008 season and is making $9 million this year.

Found it interesting the Braves all but admit they are not interested in a long term deal, freeing Tex to sign with Baltimore to be part of The Next Great Orioles Team (TNGOT) for 2009.

extension
"Found it interesting the Braves all but admit they are not interested in a long term deal,"

The obvious answer is Boras but I think the Braves want to see how Tex plays up close and personal before investing a ton of money.  If he performs well the rest of the season, I'm sure the Braves will approach Tex about an extension in the offseason and I'm sure Boras will decline.

good deal for both sides
Teixeira will help the braves in a pennant race, Texas receives some nice prospects, although it seems like the Braves never seems to trade away prospects that they regret later (with some one or two exceptions).  Hopefully, the O's will sign Teixeira next in 2008.

The FO said
that negotiations wouldn't even really start in earnest until Aug. 1, giving them two weeks to get something done.

.358obp/.476slg

that would already make him one of the best of prospects in the o's system.

O's
Once A Jones leaves I expect the Braves attitude to change and for Teix to fall in love with the organization and winning. He won't sign before next winter but soon into free agency he'll stay in Atlanta. B Olney believes the O's will make no trades while others say the Cubs have lost interest in Payton but the Mets have had serious talks with us for him. Either he or Trachsel might get dealt but that's it. Teams want veteran starting pitching and we don't have it. And we won't trade our young pitching and we'd love to trade Millar/Payton/Trachsel but we won't get more than filler and they want to give Trembley a legit shot to win games and earn the job and not Hargrove him with a firesale and a 4-32 finish.

The move
O's claim catcher Gustavo Molina off waivers

The O's are cornering the market on weak catchers. I can't wait until demand surges and they can ask any price. It worked retty well with the relievers.
