PA back to his old ways, kills deal with Cubs

According to ESPN.com's Rumor Central:

"Orioles owner Peter Angelos killed a 7-for-2 trade that would have sent second baseman Brian Roberts and left-handed pitcher Erik Bedard to the Cubs, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

"I don't think we're going to do anything, to be honest with you," Cubs manager Lou Piniella told the newspaper when asked about trading for an infielder. "If we do, it'll be in the outfield. ? It would be a right-handed bat to help out in center field. I would think that's probably a possibility, as opposed to the other things you all have been hearing about."

The Cubs reportedly are interested in Rangers outfielder Marlon Byrd."

Goddammit. I dunno whether this deal would've been good or not. But I thought we were done with this bullshit.

On another note, FEAR THE TURTLE!

how accurate..
is the report that PA killed the deal? If MacPhail wanted this done, and PA nixed it... holy ... I'll be pissed.

If that is the case
From what I understand MacPhail will has the right to walk away from his contract if Angelos interferes with the club.

In the way seeing a horrible train wreck is kind of fascinating, I sort of would enjoy seeing MacPhail bolt and the Orioles become radioactive for as long Angelos owns the club. Something like that will happen eventually anyway, so why not now?

half the story
from what i've read, this is only what some cubs guy said...per the orioles, for what its worth, this deal never existed. i'm inclined to believe that, after all...i'd hope they wouldn't take any deal for both bedard and roberts that did not include either a) rich hill, who is supposedly untouchable, or b) both felix pie and tyler colvin, which i can't see the cubs ponying up. there's plenty of things i think angelos should be taken to task for, but i'm not so sure this is one of them.

Totally not true
Andy MacPhail has already publicly refuted that story. Don't know who the Sun-Times "sources" are, but I side with public statements from both front offices over anonymous sources any day.

The guy at the Sun-Times heard that PA killed the
deal from one person, and another person said the Cubs did. Which headline would sell more papers in Baltimore?

Don't know what to belive
Some Cub reporter based on a Cub source. I'd like to see more collaboration. Not that Pete ever gets the benefit of the doubt in my book. I'm all ready to believe this story if more credible sources shed some light on it.

On the other hand, I absolutely believe Angelos will yank MacPhail around and still screw up the team. The man has an innate ability to fuck up the Orioles.

I missed the game due to a swim meet, but it was still a great thing to come home and check the score.

My friend and i had a five-minute shouting match about how we actually feel like watching md basketball again, how great they played, and how awesome that game was.

It was, indeed, awesome.

Also, I really really really dislike Tyler Hansbrough.

And that was a great game.

Also, apparently, the story that this post was based on was BS, and that's what I get for listening to the 4-letter.

Hansbrough
How about the triple fist pump from farmboy after that foul? Then the announcers were all over his jock saying how he'd stepped up his game in the 2nd half - his point total doubled but his rebounds decreased by over 66%! Homers!

Of course you do
Everyone does.

I know its been said before, but how weird is it that Duke gets like every good white recruit in the country? Is Coach K a racist or does he just know their fans are racist so he goes for the guys they'll feel an attachment towards?

by pipkin on Jan 20, 2008 12:50 PM EST up reply actions

re:
He recruits a lot of kids with limited NBA options until they physically mature and can go off to be big league role players with degrees from Duke. That just kind of happens to be a lot of white boys from places like Oregon. They go to Duke because Duke is Duke, and Coach K is Coach K.

Like him or not, and I know lots of people don't to one degree or another, he's one of the few guys still running a college basketball program and not an NBA motel.

Thanks for the time that you've given me...

Yeah,
white boys like Grant Hill, Carlos Boozer and Elton Brand - all marginal NBA type players.

As a Maryland grad who's sports trinity consist's of Redskin football, Oriole baseball and Maryland basketball (ok and the Portland Trailblazers), I dislike Duke as much as anyone. But this is irrational horseshit. You shouldn't let your emotional dislike for something cloud your judgement to the point that you make stupid statements.

Battier, Dunleavy, Ferry, Hurley...
...Laettner, Mullins, Shavlik Randolph (ok, he kinda sorta counts), Redick, Williams.

Plus a bunch of dudes who didn't do much professionally (Bilas, Wojo, Ammaker, those kind of guys), and some black dudes who only had marginal careers.

Plus some damn fine players, like those you mentioned, plus Deng ( who left early) and some other dudes.

OK, dude
Way to name three guys and ignore a bunch of other examples. Grant Hill played at Duke prior to everyone and their dog leaving college after one or two years, anyway.

Let's take a look back and what I said and find anywhere where I exhibit an "emotional dislike" of Duke. I have nothing against Coach K. I actually like Coach K.

J.J. Redick and Mike Dunleavy are high-end modern Duke players. There are lots of others who were fine college players and not NBA talent.

And look at their team makeup this year -- it's 3/4 white dudes. When the fuck did I say that was a problem or bad or good or anything? It's a fact. Coach K's teams are centered on solid fundamental players, many of whom can come in and play his style of basketball right away, that will be AT DUKE for the long haul. Those are the kids he tries to recruit. Many of them happen to be white kids who aren't physically going to be ready for the NBA for a few years, if they ever really are good enough for the pro game at all. The evidence is the team roster.

Perceive it however you wish, but don't act like it's a team full of Elton Brands and Carlos Boozers, because it absolutely is not. I also have to think this isn't a coincidence, and I'm not saying he has some racist or otherwise sinister motive for it being that way.

Thanks for the time that you've given me...

by Scott Christ on Jan 23, 2008 1:43 PM EST up reply actions

I did say he was racist
though I was only half-serious.

Perhaps Tim's comments were directed my way. I think that's probable.

I mean, intellectually I know K can't be racist and coach a college sport in 2008. I just find the whiteness of the basketball team of a hugely white southern college, populated by many northerners, that recently had a big racial to-do, well, curious (I know the grammar on that sentence sucked).

Also, I will also cop to an emotional dislike of Duke.

re:
That's why you have to go with the Terps. They don't draw the All-American glamor crowd. The 2002 team was the first to win an NCAA championship without a MacDonald's All-American since the award was started in 1978. They are a perpetual underdog in the ACC, but with a good enough coach to pull together a less talented team and make the occasional run. It makes them very easy to root for.

they were saying today on espn...
that gary williams has coached his teams to more victories over number one teams than (and this is where it got a little foggy for me) any active coach or all time in the ncaa. i can't recall which, though i'd guess the former is more likely. it's six wins now.
So, I said, uh, lama: how about a little something for the effort?

Seven, actually, i believe
and he's 4-3 in his last 7 games against #1 teams. Not shabby...

Whom ya gonna believe?
Jimmy Olsen, Cub reporter? Hee-hee, couldn't resist. Y'know, I bet the guys sent to cover the Cubs get really tired of that joke really fast.

As to believing: I believe PA is a douchebag. No, the douchebag, the one who has emerged as the paradigm for douchebag owners. I sort of hope MacPhail walks on principle. This will confuse Petey no end since he has no idea on God's green earth of what a @#$%in' principle @#$%in' is.
Charley Finley was wise, rational, good for the community and good for baseball in comparison. And that is not hyperbolic rhetoric, by the way. Sob.

Re Terps: congrats, what a game! And did I mention I hate UNC almost as much as Duke?

And how about a nice Pac 10 parallel, USC in-your-facing UCLA?!? (Though you can't really hate UCLA; its program is relatively clean, and you can't not respect the tradition.)

Finally, is it just me, or is Dick Vitale the Fred Manfra of NCAAB?

Forget it, Jake. It's Birdland.
