Patterson's status

It looks like Patterson may have priced himself out of the market and may have to come crawling back to the Orioles on a short term deal.  Here's the link:

http://mlbfleecefactor.com/2008/01/07/orioles-may-keep-patterson/

The article names a few other possible destinations but says they're limited.  I look for the O's to bring CP back on a cheap 1 year deal, maybe $7M.  Not a bad deal for his defense alone.  Thoughts?

$7 Million?
You crazy.  I'd consider giving him $2.5 Mil.  Tops.  And honestly, I'd probably even feel bad about that.  The guy is a streaky hacker who can't get on base to save his life far more often than any kinda decent Major League deal would warrant.

Are you kidding? 7 Mil?
We'd get a better return on an investment of 7 million by lighting it on fire. League minimum is too much for this guy because he doesn't even approach LEAGUE AVERAGE as a hitter.

sure, give him $7 million for an overrated glove
Why not? It's not like we have guys every bit as good as Patterson for super cheap. Oops, we have about four of them. I always want to like Corey because he seems like a nice guy and like he works his ass off, but he's just not good.

Thanks for the time that you've given me...

Just because he was embarassingly impatient
as a hitter, doesn't mean that his defense was overrated. One of the few bright spots of last season was the defense and he had a large part in that. With that said, I am more than ready for him to walk.

re:
What do you think his defense was actually worth in the final standings?

+1
Wasn't it this past year he robbed that homerun from the DEVILrays to end the game?

Yeah
Viewed from a vacuum (i.e., not knowing that it was the two last-place teams in the division), that was one of the most exciting games I've ever seen.  In context, not so much.

The only good thing about getting Corey back
...is forcing Payton into a roleplaying mode (assuming Scott beats him out for daily LF, which shouldn't be hard).  But $7M for a short-term known commodity is stupid when you're rebuilding.  I'll take Corey over Tike Redman, but anything more than $2M for him is ridiculous at this point.

NO
No to Patterson.  I'd rather run Payton out there if we can't ditch him than bring back Patterson.

I actually like Corey
But not for $7 million I don't....

I'm not as stingy as Jonnypops though, I could do $3 million.

Okay...
...maybe $7M was too high.  But the O's may have to pay a premium to get him to sign a one year deal.  I don't think the constraint should be money.  It should be # of years.

Maybe 1 year, $5M?   I mean, anything less and the Braves or Cardinals would be foolish not to top it.

Paying Corey Patterson
any amount of money to play professional baseball is foolish, period, because Corey Patterson is not good enough. Let some other team sign him to a "bargain" and watch him create out after out.

Wait: Payton and Patterson are DIFFERENT GUYS?!?
And that's seven million dollars, not rubles?!?

Actually seven million anything for Payterson is pretty #%&@ed up, y'ask me. We will successfully drop 90-95 games without him/them.

I was going to contribute to the Alberto Gonzales Defense Fund, but I forgot.
