Gossage goes into HoF

Well, Goose Gossage is in. He was definitely better than Sutter so congrats, I guess. He's the only one. Blyleven gets denied another year, and Raines should've been a slam-dunk, first ballot entree. I hate the BBWAA.

Good for him
You can make a case that he's the best modern reliever currently in the Hall of Fame.

Blyleven, Raines, McGwire, and Albert Belle (who didn't get enough votes to be considered) deserve to be in as well.

At least Dave Concepcion didn't get in.  Bobby Bonillia is a better player than Dave Concepcion.

He definitely is...
the best modern reliever, as you say, and was more deserving than Sutter, so it was definitely a puzzle when Sutter went in and he didn't. It really annoys me that it's taking forever for the writers to see the light of day on Blyleven and appears it will take as long with Raines. I think McGwire will eventually get in but the writers will make him sweat, and Albert Belle...yeah, he probably deserves it on dominance+sudden injury shortened career (the Puckett Method) but he won't ever be in b/c of his well known assholia (and that's a whole other controversy).

If nothing else, at least the writers did not 'dilute' the Hall this year with Concepcion or Mattingly or etc.

Still, Bowie Kuhn gets in, but not Raines or Blyleven. Blech.

oh good
Now Gossage can get up on his soapbox again. Gossage acts like he's 105 years old. His old fart rhetoric bugs the shit out of me. But he deserves the honor. I don't like Zab Judah, either, but he used to be a hell of a boxer.

Raines not getting in is ridiculous. His real curse, I think, is that he played in the same timeframe as Rickey Henderson and was generally considered less than.

Thanks for the time that you've given me...

Well that's true...
...the problem is, every other leadoff hitter in the history of the GAME is "less than" Rickey Henderson. If that's where people are going to set the bar for Raines, he has no prayer.

Still
A lot of people consider Raines the second-best leadoff man of all time and a superlative like that typically gets you in.  I mean, they've let guys in who are like the 120th best something or other.

I think he'll get in
At worst, it'll come when the VC is his era of guys. So, he might be dead by then.

his curse is
that he played his best years in Montreal.  No one in Montreal followed that team.  They're all Habs, all of the time.

re:
I like to give the BBWAA the benefit of the doubt and assume they're aware that the Montreal Expos were a major league baseball team no different than anyone else. Maybe that's too much credit. It probably is, in fact.
