Around SBN: Padres Trade Khalil Greene To Cardinals Bar-right-arrows

MacPhail Going After Teixeira

A pretty decent article from the washington Post..... Click here

"I think we would be remiss if we don't look into what might be unique opportunities in the case of geographic ties to the area," said MacPhail, who did not name names, mindful of league tampering rules. "I think we owe it to our fans to explore that. Again, I don't know how realistic it would be, but I think we'd be remiss in not exploring it."

No real big surprise here, I'm safe to say about all of us was hoping we'd trade for him a few months ago.

He's right.

They would be remiss.

Once he checks the price tag, Andy will move on, preferably to Dan Johnson rather than Millar.

You are not safe to say good sir

What good would it have done to trade for him?

I think the chances are slim to none Teixeira ends up an O. I’d like to see it though.

also

I do not think we should have traded for him. Why trade players for him when we have no chance of winning anything this season just to have to re-sign him this offseason? We’d have lost prospects and probably not been able to keep him. Instead we keep the prospects and have a far outside shot at getting him to come here. Big whoop.

Texiera

The O’s won’t sign Texiera, because it is not in the best interest of the club to do so. As we all saw this year it is much easier to get offense than it is pitching. Guys like Mora, Ramon, Huff, and Millar, veterans hitters, are relatively easy to find, and they can still produce. We need to focus on pitching and defense. With this in mind AJ Burnett would be a much better free agent option than Tex.

by Birdfan01 on Oct 2, 2008 2:03 AM EDT   0 recs

I wouldn’t really say that Millar or Ramon produced and Mora had two good months. AJ Burnett has thrown 200 innings 3 times in 10 years. We don’t really need another 160-inning pitcher.

Response

SC- Regardless of when Mora’s production came, it all counts. He ended the year with the 8th highest VORP of any third baseman, certainly nothing to scoff at. I’ll agree with you that Millar didn’t produce, but I think you are unfairly critical of Ramon. Hitting 15 HRs, with a on OPS of .714 certainly won’t bring home any MVP hardware, but for a catcher it is nothing to scoff at. I’m not saying that I love seeing Mora and Ramon out there everyday, but what I am trying to show is that it we can win with those types of veteran hitters. We can’t win with what our starters, outside of Guthrie, gave us last year.

If you look at our probable 2009 rotation- Guthrie, Cabrera, Olsen*, Albers, Patton*, Waters*, Liz it obvious that we need help. Especially when you consider the fact that out of Albers and Patton it is only realistic to expect one to bounce back from the torn labrum injury and contribute this year. Our pitching needs much more help than our offense.

Concerning Burnett- I don’t love his seeming lack of enthusiasm and his troubling injury history, but I think that saying he is over-rated is a bit much. His career ERA is 3.81, and something I’m even more encouraged about is that is the last three years his GO/AO ratio has been around 1.70. A key when facing the tough lineups of the AL East, and pitching in hitter friendly Camden Yards in July and August.

I do think pitching is a concern, but I don’t like Burnett. He’ll cost alot and has injuries. I’d much rather sign a couple reliable stopgap guys to 1-2 year deals (preferably 1 year with an option). Pitching is our strength in minors, but I don’t think any will be ready on Opening Day. So to aviod rushing them, I think it’d be best to sign some guys that should be healthy the whole season. Burnett really doesn’t fit this mold, I’d only sign him if he’s willing to take a “hometown” discount (he does live in Baltimore County in the offseason so it is possible).

free agent pitchers

always seem like a dicey gamble and the only one i think the o’s have a realistic shot at that i’d think would be a good fit would be derek lowe. i actually think a year of moose would be great, too, if they could swing it. paul byrd does NOT excite me, but i’ll be doggone if that’s not where we end up.

Alot of the guys don’t really excite much either. (I’d really like to bring Mussina back though if he’s available) But I do think I could live with some of the guys given that they are stopgaps. I really think Matusz, Tillman, and Arrietta are going to be great pitchers, and I want to make sure we don’t screw them up by rushing them. I really don’t want to have another situation like this year, where the most of the rotation either sucks or gets injured, tempting us to bring up one of the prospects when they are not ready.

by edsachs1 on Oct 2, 2008 9:41 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Mora

It all counts as far as his agent spinning that if he had a contract to negotiate. But being realistic here, the guy hit for two months, and was incredibly hot for one. He killed us the entire first half of the season. Given his age and general decline, I think we’re a lot more likely to see the first half Mora than the two months of great production Mora from here on out.

I agree

Mora was lucky to end up the stat line that he did, and I am not counting on him to put up the same numbers next year. But that is not the main point of my post. I was citing Mora, Ramon, Huff, Millar, ect… to show that it is a lot easier to win with mediocre position players than it is pitchers.

by Birdfan01 on Oct 4, 2008 3:36 AM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Mediocre pitching might have made this team respectable in the final standings. We had terrible pitching, not mediocre.

ramon sucked

badly. his bat was just ok, as he had the 6th best OPS among catchers with 400+ plate appearances. but his defense was consistently brutal. he was second to last in the AL in CS at 19.5%. he rarely got down to block a ball in the dirt, instead preferring to take a backhanded swipe at everything.

defense seems tough to evaluate, especially for catchers, but i probably watched 100 games this year and there were very few where i didn’t say “ramon is a lazy m****rf****r” at least once.

Ramon was b-r-oodle behind the plate

Just terrible. And he didn’t hit enough to make up for that.

I don’t like Ramon because he gives off an “I don’t give a shit” stink. I mean I’m really certain he does give a shit, but you couldn’t tell watching him play or in interviews.

yeah...

i mean, quiroz is a pretty poor hitter, but a poor hitter playing a key defensive position well is maybe a bit more valuable than an avergae hitter playing a key defensive position poorly?

i dunno. sort of seems like in some situations, you make that trade in a heartbeat, but that’s maybe more the case when you don’t have two or three other blackholes in your lineup (i’m looking at you, shortstop x and jaty payton!)

pitching does change everything

At that point you can play a Molina and do OK. Quiroz wouldn’t be the worst starting catcher we’ve seen. We saw Geronimo Gil. We won a World Series with Rick Dempsey who wasn’t all that good.

in fact...

you look at that championship team from 83 and dempsey, todd cruz AND dauer were all pretty crummy at the plate…but then, when jim palmer’s the shittiest pitcher in your rotation, you’re in pretty good shape, right?
