So, Andy MacPhail expexts Adam Loewen to sign with the Toronto Blue Jays...

"I think Toronto is going to sign him," said MacPhail. "I don't know if it's a done deal, but I've been led to believe that is where it's headed."

This is just like screwing around with your girlfriend's best friend because you're sure your relationship is on solid ground, only to find out that she's screwing around with a banker and she breaks up with you.  It's just like that...but for baseball.

Screw you, Cito!

UPDATE: Adam Loewen has indeed signed a deal with the Toronto Blue Jays, as you'll see if you click on the link above (it's been updated by The Sun). I know you have to look out for yourself first, but this seems pretty underhanded considering all the O's have done for this kid. I'd wish him luck with his hitting, except I don't want to [Note by Stacey, 10/24/08 4:41 PM EDT ]

MacPhail's got a funny little quote, though:
“I don’t think it’s about money,” MacPhail said. “The way it was explained to me, it’s all about playing for his national team in Canada and it’s not about terms or anything. The way it was explained to me is he grew up there and it’s his lifelong dream to play for Toronto. I have no interest in having Baltimore becoming part of Canada. We’re proud members of the United States and there isn’t much we can do about it.”

Patriotism soars in the heart of the American GM.

“It’s not about the money.”

It’s about the money.

Ungrateful bastard. Hope you never see an AB in the majors, eh?

Ew

Not that I really think Adam Loewen will ever amount to much of a major league baseball player, but that’s pretty lame of him.

I had a hunch

It makes sense, though. What a gigantic bust. This is worse than Wade Townsend. Because we all wanted the guy to do well, we never really discussed how much of a complete and total waste Loewen was to our team.

My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

Which I doubt. Although given our luck he WILL be the next Rick Ankiel, only for the Blue Jays. I always like Adam, but now I sort of hate him.

The Orioles had to release him to keep him

Loewen was out of options because he insisted on a major league contract when he signed out of the draft.

Yes, he’s within his rights to do this, but it doesn’t speak highly of his character.

The Orioles have invested a lot of time and money in him, and they have strongly supported him since he opted to end his career as a pitcher. Loewen acted like he wanted to give his all to make good on the Orioles investment, and then he bolted as soon as the O’s fell for his ruse.

by dkdc on Oct 24, 2008 5:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Did you read the article?

He had a gentleman’s agreement with the O’s and the O’s spent the past few months training him because of it.

I hope he spends the rest of his career in A.

I'm just noticing

a drastic shift in tone over the last four days. When he was released it was:

“The cynic in me can’t help but point out that the Orioles are in the driver’s seat in this situation and can do with Loewen as they please; the chances of him coming through are so low that they can release him, promise him a merit based future contract, and not have to worry about him signing elsewhere because the demand is nonexistent.”

“This is a pretty good position for the O’s to be in, Loewen doesn’t really have any other options than to oblige to whatever the Orioles want.”

Well apparently not.

And of course:

"How about this:

"I said, the real favor, follow my advice and fire your fucking ass because a loser is a loser."

Bye, bye A-Low. Have fun in a senior league with more money than I’ll make in a lifetime, you bum."

I can’t believe he’d want to leave good ol Baltimore and these great fans!

I'm not sure what the relevance of any of the above has on the situation at hand

Anybody can cherry pick quotes. As said above, Loewen backed out of an implicit agreement. His release was merely a formality to get him off the 40 man roster, not an opportunity to listen to offers. That’s what irks people.

Zartan says, "Sign Dan Johnson."

by birdman on Oct 24, 2008 5:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

So he backed out

BFD. The quotes are relevant because they are from Orioles fans in reference to the player Adam Loewen being released four days ago and stand in stark contrast to anything being said today. Four days ago nobody gave half a shit but now that y’all have something to bitch about it’s hot newz and dkdc is stroking out on two separate websites. Although he strikes me as a bit of a loon to begin with.

by Awesome Mike Awesome on Oct 24, 2008 5:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

None of those quotes are from me

I’ve defended Loewen at virtually every turn of his career. I didn’t blame him for his control problems or question his toughness through all his injuries. I thought he was a longshot to make the major leagues as a hitter, but I supported his decision to try it out because his arm couldn’t handle the stresses of pitching.

I feel a little betrayed for giving him the benefit of the doubt for so long.

by dkdc on Oct 24, 2008 6:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I've been a big Loewen defender as well

I don’t know if I feel betrayed, but certainly disappointed. If the Jays are offering him a boatload of money, I guess I could maybe understand, but I doubt that’s the case.

I blame his left arm

Control is a skill just like velocity, and it can’t be taught. Screaming at Loewen to throw the damn ball over the plate makes about as much sense as screaming at Garrett Olson to throw the ball 99 MPH.

His left arm

is attached to the rest of him, so it’s kinda part of the package. Blame the arm, blame the player.

The guy came right out and said

he wanted to play in Canada. His career is probably over and he’d rather finish it with the Blue Jays. He’s also more than contrite, certainly as contrite as the situation requires, in the article, and acknowledges whatever it is the Orioles did for him. But apparently he’s a “prick,” “jackass,” “typical of today’s players,” whatever that means, “self-centered,” “a dillweed,” and he’s going to get booed. I apologize for “cherry picking” those quotes but I’m limited to what people have actually said.

And FWIW, the quotes in the other thread seem to indicate that it was believed to be an obvious fact that no other team on Earth would want Adam Loewen — that clearly has changed and so he changed his mind and seems to kinda feel bad. But go ahead, pile on and overreact. That’s something new.

by Awesome Mike Awesome on Oct 24, 2008 6:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not nasty words just disappointment and, yes, boos

My booing has much to do with the reasons Birdman and dkdc have offered. I understand that as an adult you have to take every opportunity to get paid or even to work “closer to home”. Heck, I’ve done that twice. My problem isn’t that I feel he’s a sell out, it’s that the Orioles fostered and supported his transition from pitcher to hitter, wanted to offer him a new contract to make him a possible part of their future and he turned his back.
The gentleman’s contract aside, there’s a level of respect I feel he’s not exhibiting and that’s a shame. I liked the guy. I rooted when he returned from injury. But I’ve just been jilted, and my wedding dress makes me look fat.

by Dr Orpheus on Oct 24, 2008 6:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, lack of respect

“It has been something I’ve been struggling with ever since I got put on waivers and the possibility presented itself,” said Loewen. “[The Orioles] fully did what they had to do and I was aware of that. They did everything on their part that they could do to try to sign me back. I love playing in Baltimore and I loved the coaching staff. Even when I went to instructional league, the coaching staff was outstanding. There was no animosity at all. I just thought this was an opportunity that doesn’t come along very often. It was tougher than I could say. I’m excited to be a Blue Jay, but I’ll never forget my time in Baltimore.”

What an a-hole.

Come on man, I’m really not trying to pick a fight, but that’s standard PR speak, particularly important in this case given that he backed out a gentleman’s agreement (a point you STILL refuse to acknowledge). It’s beneficial for your career to say nice things publicly even when you don’t want to. Kim Ng didn’t give the M’s GM job but she managed to say a bunch of nice things about the M’s today. Again, it’s the standard play from the PR book.

What the fuck

You are dense.

Let me simplify.

What’s his balls accused Loewen of being disrespectful. I countered with an overly respectful quote. You say he doesn’t mean it!!! First of all, that is cherry picking of the highest order — saying he doesn’t mean it because it doesn’t help your stupid case. Secondly, who gives a shit. If he SAID it, even if on the inside he’s thinking “fuck the stupid Orioles,” that is like the definition of respect. But to you apparently players are only to be believed about their own feelings when they’re trashing the team. So I say that’s cherry picking, my friend.

And from that you get that I’m defending Shea Hillenbrand calling Theo Epstein a faggot. Brilliant.

As I have been saying repeatedly, I don’t think going to blog and picking out quotes out is representative of fan sentiment. People can cherry pick quotes. Besides, as I already said, he has sucked as a pitcher so it’s not suprisingly some posters don’t give a rat’s ass about him and boo him (see David Ortiz, ALCS 200*). I might not characterize it as “shitty”, but I agree that the odds are Loewen will never amount to anything for it to matter.

I think it is fair to attribute to Loewen a lack of appreciation for how he was treated by the organization and even say he showed a certain lack of respect. But in the end, it is a business. If he got a better deal, or just wanted to play for a Canadian team, who really cares. If you want to care about something, care about why Loewen was picked ahead of Cole Hamels in the first place.

BTW – what would people’s opinion be if say – Rick Ankiel – decided to come to Baltimore because he grew up with them as his favorite team? I wouldn’t care if he signed a Cardinals contract and was able to break it by threatening to release naked photos of Walt Jockerty’s daughter.

Loewen isn’t leaving the Orioles. He’s committed to them. I’m convinced of this and am willing to back it with some bold guarantees.

If Loewen ends up in another organization, I will quit my job at MASN and work as Pacman Jones’ publicist. Or his bodyguard.

I will pass out business cards claiming to be John Kruk’s personal trainer. And hair stylist.

I will claim to have taught Alex Cintron everything he knows about fielding.

I will offer to babysit for Melvin Mora. Hungover.

I will ride around Baltimore all day Sunday with my engine on fire until I find a Detroit Lions bar.

I will tell Chris McAlister that he’s not one of the Ravens’ best 11 players on defense and he can’t carry Corey Ivy’s jock.

I will wear Haloti Ngata’s jock as a Halloween mask.

Bwahahahahahahahaha

Carlos and Victor Zambrano have exactly the same number of career postseason wins. Who would have thought?

can you blame him?

For leaving this organization?

It still really sucks of him to do this, of course.

this organization is on an upswing?

And he should be happy with anyone that’s willing to pay him to play baseball at this point. The Blue Jays were willing. He gets to “go home.” So no I don’t blame him, but an organization that has done nothing but bend over backwards for him since he was drafted is not to blame.

Anyway, fuck him. He sucks. This is really a lot of talk for a shitty ballplayer.

True

Yeah I agree that the organization is on the upswing, but if I’m Roberts or Guthrie or Markakis I have a hard time believing that. But you are right that this organization really has been great to him. But at the end of the day, it is a bizness.

SIX minor league teams, NOT A DAMN ONE OF THEM in Canada. Lansing, Michigan is as close as he’s getting to Canada. Hey, Scott, can you see Canada from your house? Didn’t think so.

Adam Loewen fuckin’ lied. He can go drive a Zamboni into the Northwest Territories in shorts and a t-shirt for all I care.

Nothing but an ungrateful liar.

I thought

the Blue Jays played for the Syracuse Sky Chiefs and the Las Vegas 51s were the Dodgers AAA team?

Are you telling me

I can’t believe everything I read on the internet????

Anyway, neither one is in Canada. Although Syracuse obviously is closer.

And I went off the Blue Jays official site for the info.

I don't understand how Toronto is home

to someone from BC. That would be like moving from Toronto to Baltimore because you’re from Seattle.

Oh, and fuck him. And all of the people who are like “well the Os released him” without understanding that it was either that or have him take up a roster spot while playing in A ball.

Curt never met a buttered roll he didn't like.

What a little shit...

This is the same motherfucker who demanded a big ass bonus and a fast track to the Majors, which was completely ill-suited to his development btw, in order to sign with us. We put his ass out there in game after game, despite the fact that he walked everything that approached home plate. Then once he can’t pitch anymore he goes and signs with the Blue Jays after delivering on exactly jack shit in exchange for what the O’s gave up for him.

Fuck Adam Loewen.

I'm beginning to loath that I wrote this at all

Also, I like the idea of someone being called “what’s his nuts”. Churlish and gay, that’s what that comment was. Teehee, ha ha. Good times.

When I told Loewen that fans here might be more understanding because he didn’t sign with the Yankees, he chuckled and replied, “I’d never do that.”

Thanks so much, Adam, I would NEVER be able to stomach that one.Even though we drafted you in the top five out of high school, developed you for six years, and gave you every chance as a hitter, I’ll be glad if you’re anywhere outside of New York. Yankees Suck!!!! Go Orioles!!!!

This is starting to get to me the more that I think about it. If the Orioles didn’t force him out the door, Loewen is really stabbing this organization in the back. I understand that he wants more money, but that doesn’t change the fact that he is laughing in the face of this franchise. We gave the guy a major league deal out of high school, he blew out his arm, and then we verablly agreed to sign him to a MiLB contract and devote every possible resource to his development. Although this isn’t a huge loss because his chances of succeeding are so low, it’s just shocking to me that someone would have the audacity to do that.

I really don’t think that I have to wish Loewen good luck in Toronto.

2002 draft:

1.) Bryan Bullington
2.) B.J. Upton
3.) Christopher Gruler
4.) Adam Loewen
5.) Clint Everts
6.) Zack Greinke
7.) Prince Fielder
8.) Scott Moore (Yes, that Scott Moore)
9.) Jeff Francis
10.) Drew Meyer

There are guys like Kazmir, Hamels, Guthrie, Saunders and Cain taken later, but that top ten is pretty pathetic. It cannot be understated how terrible the Orioles and Pirates were at picking players in the draft before last year.

My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

Oh, Loewen can get fucked.

I hope he enjoys the next 3 years in the Blue Jays minor league system. He never amounted to anything as a pitcher and he won’t as a hitter. Slap in the face, eh, maybe…but when his arm is that fragile, how much can it really hurt?

I’m not too upset. This was a carry over from the crap management of the past. It was beyond stupid to give a high school pitcher a major league contract. It lead to us being forced to release him in this situation. In a way, its good to distance ourselves from past mismanagement.

I am a little disappointed, I really wanted to watch Loewen’s progress next season. I’ve also lost respect for him, since all reports seemed to indicate they had a gentleman’s agreement to resign a minor league deal. But overall I don’t see it as a big deal and I imagine we will forget about it quickly.

I completely forgot about that!

Also, Millar.

They’ll just need to reshoot that video or the fans may throw things at the screen when Loew-dawg’s mug graces it.

$4 million down the drain

Organizations hate throwing huge money at prospects, and guys like Loewen are the reason why. Horrible investments from a pure business perspective, but its necessary for the occasional few that do pan out.

I like that AMA only used half my Glengarry Glen Ross quote.

It's Adam Loewen you all are talking about.

He ceased to matter the day it was announced he was giving up pitching.

It’s questionable he even mattered prior to that.

And blaming Loewen for the contract he signed? I’d say both his agent (Boras, I believe) and the O’s should be ahead of him when dishing out blame. Anyone here with the talent to be drafted top 5 in the MLB draft who says he would have signed for less is either a liar or an idiot.
