New Uniforms Coming November 12th

Our new away jerseys will be revealed on November 12th at the Gallery in Harborplace at noon.  "Baltimore" will take it's rightful place on the away grays.  Here's a sneak peek:

via i4.photobucket.com

In addition, the BALTIMORE Orioles are ditching the all-black hat they currently wear with the away uni in favor of the home hat with orange bill.  The "O's" hat will remain the Friday alternate... unfortunately.

Interesting to note that the invitation for the unveiling has the full team name as opposed to the Angelos-pushed regional "Orioles" only moniker. Seems they're finally returning to their base.  Good move!

UPDATE: The team will unveil new BP jerseys this year as well.  A Maryland state flag patch will adorn the sleeves of game jerseys.  And the bird has been "updated".

the O’s hat is a thousand times better looking than the orthinologically correct bird ever has been.

How 'bout a new Owner to go with them?

(Sorry, most of my friends and my wife are Phillies fans. I’m very happy for them, but also feeling extra bitter, too.)

I don’t like the “O’s” hat. Call it irrational (it is!), but the apostrophe s annoys me. I’d like it more if it just had the “O”

Time's yours, Andy.

What great news!

The all-black road cap always felt kinda lame. I can live with the O’s Friday cap.

Anyone going on the 12th?

I'd like Cartoon Bird

But they’re not yet worthy of it.

they're just as worthy as the 88 team.

good news!!

hopefully the they aren’t being lazy and reusing a uni from the past – although i’d be ok with it if they did. I think we’ve had the cursive “orioles” logo for long enough

Bring back the cartoon bird

It’s awesome that we have “Baltimore” on the jerseys on again, but I would be able to die happy if they brought back the real bird.

My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

Our logo is different story. How about the cartoon bird as a shoulder patch?

I think it's just because we could use a change.

They’ve had the same scheme for 20 years now (and 14 of them were in losing seasons).

But I think maintaining ornithologically correct birds could work. Just making them a bit more stylized, like they were in the ’50s.

No, you're not the only one...

I did a poll on this back in the early days of CC. The cartoon bird won, but there were definitely passionate defenders of the current bird too. I’m all for the cartoon bird myself. They should at least bring it back as the Friday alternate because the “Os” hat is lame.

In a perfect world...

The O’s would alternate between an all-black hat with the cartoon bird and an all black hat with an orange “B”.

I hate the fact that the bill is a different color than the crown.

The orange billed caps are the best caps in baseball, even better than the Brewer’s baseball glove hat.

Agree with the "B".

In my perfect world, the home hats would have the “B” and the away hats would have the bird.
Thusly, you would always have mention of both the city & the nickname on each uni.
Home “B” hat with “Orioles” jersey – maybe a bird sleeve patch.
Away bird hat with “Baltimore” jersey.

Partly.

But Angelos is the one who had all mentions of the word “Baltimore” removed from all official merchandise & everywhere inside the stadium save for the Baltimore Sun clock. He even had the sales people answer the phones as “…the Orioles, how can I help you?” This was a specific directive to NOT say “…Baltimore Orioles, how can I help you?”

No surprise to anyone here, but he’s a big douche.

It’s gonna be cool, when I’m living in some other American League city, people will actually know which city I’m representing. Who woulda thought?

I don’t know about the cartoon bird. I think the only reason it’s so cool now is because it’s contrasted with the current logo. The current logo isn’t bad.

My favorite is the Cartoon Bird with the orange bill (I guess they all had that) and the white panels in front. But that’s the one they wore when I was a kid.

I’m a big fan of the “Angry Bird” logo (Stacey’s avatar), too. They were selling a hat with that logo on the team’s website, but it looks like they’re out of it now.

…with the 70s, tricolor scheme? That’s a hell of a combination, if you ask me. And you didn’t. But I offer that up free of charge…for now.

On that point, Messrs Higgins and S,

we must disagree.

The tri-colored hats look like clown hats to me. Simple and distinguished, with mostly blacks and some orange highlights is so much better, in my opinion.

by Chanumas on Oct 28, 2008 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I will very readily admit that I prefer the Cartoon bird largely on account of nostalgia, and not the actual aesthetics of the hat itself.

And I think it’s very uglyness is part of its appeal. You’ve got to be a real Orioles fan to wear that crap.

Time's yours, Andy.

If we went back to cartoon bird

I’d like it to be on an all black hat, or black with orange bill. I like the hats with the white background, but they in my mind only go with the older uniforms (like on throwback night).

agreed

Yeah the powder blues are nice, but I think we all like the kitschy throwbacks. It’s their regular uniforms I can’t stand. First of all, the “J(ay)” on the cap is awful, and the script on the front of the uniform looks unbalanced to me. I get nauseous just looking at it. And don’t get me started about the numbers on the back of the uniform, which look like they were stolen from the pilot episode of “Star Trek: The Next Generation.”

Another argument against teams invoking black where no black is needed.

Christ Almighty. They look like the Gray Jays.
And was “Blue Jays” too long to be bothered with?

Not to mention that the new font was so similar to Tampa Bay’s prior to this year… the Toronto Gray Devil Jays. Atrocious.

Gotta think Canada was just thrilled that their only MLB team removed the Canadian flag from their primary uniforms.

This will make old people happy

For some reason removing the “Baltimore” really pissed off older Orioles fans at the time. I think they saw it as a precursor to the O’s moving somewhere else.

A similar stir was raised when Jim Palmer called them the “Baltimore-Washington” Orioles on a broadcast in the 1980’s.

It’s not like he hadn’t been living in the area for well over a decade by then. It takes about 2 weeks to figure out how Baltimorons feel about DC…particularly when it comes to their sports.

Apostrophes are used to denote contractions as well as for possessives. Granted, it looks doofy on a hat, but it’s grammatically correct.

You know what

I consider myself an intelligent, well educated person. But I didn’t know you could contract one word. I mean, I know people do it (we write gov’t on stuff at my work all the time for government), but I didn’t realize it was part of the contraction rule. But I just looked it up on Wiki and here is what it says:

In traditional grammar, a contraction is the formation of a new word from one or more individual words. This often is a result of a common sequence of words, or, as in French, to maintain a flowing sound. However, contraction has gained a broader meaning both in linguistics and other areas of language research. Based on the latest definitions, contraction is shortening of a word, syllable, or word group by omission of internal letters. [ISO 4:1984]

Wikipedia is great

Some teachers hate it, some love it. Personally, I think it’s great, and studies show that it’s about as accurate as the Encyclopedia Britannica, and is always growing.

by PhilR8 on Oct 30, 2008 4:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Bah...

Back in my day we didn’t need Wikipedia.

Here’s how it worked in the good old days: Some guy who looked like he just escaped from a chain gang would stop by the homestead selling a set of encyclopedias. The parents, temporarily terrified at the idea that their own flesh-and-blood might not learn enough to do anything other than sell encyclopedias door-to-door, would agree to purchase a set. The first volume would be free, and they’d get another one in the mail each month as long as they kept paying for them.

By the time the letter “D” arrived in the mail the parents, having seen volumes “A” through “C” sit untouched on the shelf, would have given up on the idea that their child would ever make anything of themselves anyway, and would cancel the subscription. This is why people of my generation know very little about anything that begins with a letter after “D.”

Anyway, that was good enough for us. I don’t see why you kids today think you need more.
