they really need to get David Price or someone up

I mean come on. Kazmir is all over the place and this is do or die.

Manager of the Year Joe Maddon has had some goofy bullpen management this offseason.

Hey, Price is starting to jog around.

what a shitty night

Imagine if they called this one before nine? It’s an official game.

Oh man

This is going to get GOOD. They’re actually going to be forced to call a 2-1 game in the sixth/seventh.

It’s unfortunate, but how do you play in those conditions, the infield will start to flood soon enough. Additionally, how do you get around the rules?

My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

Wow…the Phillies sure got hosed. But I guess a rain-shortened deciding game is Selig’s worst PR nightmare.

Time's yours, Andy.

by BrianS on Oct 28, 2008 9:22 AM EDT reply actions

It is so much better for the Phils that they called this game

If they had won the championship by a rain-shortened game, it probably would be considered somewhat “illegitimate”.

by Chanumas on Oct 28, 2008 10:24 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah

But if they lose when play resumes and then the Phils have to go back to the St. Pete circus tent, they’ll be fighting a battle to see the ball again and could choke.

That game last night

reminded me of the downpour game the O’s played against the Yankees and for that I have to take the Phillies side in things. It would have been awful to decide the WS by a rain shortened game, but that last inning was ridiculous.

I’m really confident the Phils will put this away if not tonight (or whenever they finish) then back in Tampa.

It sucks for their fans right now, but it’ll be better for them in the long run that Philly’s first championship in forever isn’t “tainted”.

(Now get with the program, Andy Reid you fat ****!!!!)

Time's yours, Andy.

by BrianS on Oct 28, 2008 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Why did they even play the top of the 6th?

Bud said that no matter what, he wasn’t going to give the WS to the Phils on a shortened game (inferring that even if the Phils were ahead, they’d still suspend it). Why exactly were they playing? If it’s raining too hard to allow the infield fly rule, isn’t it raining too hard to play baseball?

It’s simply amazing how bad of a commisioner Selig is. He said it was his decision, but then went on to blame the head grounds keeper, the two teams and meterologist in general.

Did anyone else see Bud Selig speak after the game?

How has this guy been commissioner for most of our lifetimes?
He’s the least compelling, most blithering speaker I’ve ever seen.
After about five minutes of his soporific blather I began to see a pattern emerge:
Correct me if I’m wrong, but is he “Separated At Birth” from Donald Rumsfeld. The glasses, the squinty eyes, the inscrutable utterances…

Unprecedented revenues? For some reason I think the owners like that. Frankly I think Selig has done a good job since the strike, although interleague play is stupid. He makes good decisions…just long after he should have in most cases.

Good decisions?

All-Star game tie
All-Star game deciding hfa
Interleague play
Steroid indifference
Steroid overreation
Choice of Mitchell
Reaction to Mitchell report
World Series 2008

Yes, they do have unprecedented revenue; but I would guess that’s despite Bud, not because of him.

Yes

“All-Star game tie”

What would you have suggested he do? This is the manager’s fault.

“All-Star game deciding hfa”

Who cares?

“Interleague play”

This one I don’t like.

“Steroid indifference
Steroid overreation”

???

“Choice of Mitchell”

I guess.

“Reaction to Mitchell report”

Not sure what this means. Bonds, Clemens, McGwire, Palmeiro, etc. — all the big steroid users who so defiled the game — are now persona non grata. It took too long, but they addressed the problem of steroids in baseball and players associated with them are now tainted. What more do you want?

“World Series 2008”

Like it or not, Bud Selig does not make it rain. They should’ve postponed the game earlier (or perhaps never even started) but ultimately the right thing has happened.

“Yes, they do have unprecedented revenue; but I would guess that’s despite Bud, not because of him.”

Well isn’t that fortunate? You asked how he’d been commissioner so long; I told you. The only thing I can really kill Selig for at this point is bending over for the networks with these ludicrous start times.

by Awesome Mike Awesome on Oct 28, 2008 4:09 PM EDT up reply actions

“What would you have suggested he do? This is the manager’s fault.” — Ideally, samething that should be done for any other game, nothing. At very worst, allow them to recycle pitchers.

“Who cares?” —Having an exibition game decide WS? Especially in reaction to calling a tie in the game? Lots of people care.

"Steroid indifference
Steroid overreation" - We went from just about ignoring the issue (no rule against it, annoyomous tests, etc) to making steroid users or those accused of being steroid abusers being treated like the scum of the earth.

“I guess.” — Hiring an investigator to name names of current steroid users based on little to know evidence; and then picking a guy who’s on one club’s payroll?? Then stating you are going to suspend the named players?? And you GUESS that’s a bad decision?

“Not sure what this means…” — For starters, it means that the very first thing that Mitchell said was that those named in the report shouldn’t be punished…. The very first thing that Selig says is that we are going to follow all recomendations in report; next thing he says is that he isn’t going to follow the recommendation about suspensions. Then says he doesn’t care that there isn’t proof and then essentially says that he knows Mitchell and he would never make a mistake.

“Like it or not, Bud Selig does not make it rain.” — Never blamed him for the rain, I blamed him for the reaction to the rain. When they have to change the rules of the game just to continue playing; then you made the wrong move in not suspending it.

"Well isn’t that fortunate? You asked how he’d been commissioner so long; I told you. " — No, actually I didn’t ask that.

Wait — so now home field decides the World Series? Do the Phillies know this? This is one of the biggest nothing issues around. Obviously it was much better when it was decided by whether the year ended in an odd or even number.

“Steroid overreation” – We went from just about ignoring the issue (no rule against it, annoyomous tests, etc) to making steroid users or those accused of being steroid abusers being treated like the scum of the earth."

Like Andy Pettitte and Brian Roberts? I don’t see how Selig is to blame for how the media portrays Bonds or Clemens.

"Then stating you are going to suspend the named players?? "

Did I miss them actually doing this?

“Never blamed him for the rain, I blamed him for the reaction to the rain. When they have to change the rules of the game just to continue playing; then you made the wrong move in not suspending it.”

Um…they did suspend it. Unless you’re saying they should’ve done so earlier. Which would seem to jibe with my position that Selig makes the right decision, just often unfortunately too late.

“"Well isn’t that fortunate? You asked how he’d been commissioner so long; I told you. " — No, actually I didn’t ask that.”

Oh I see. My mistake. I answered that guy’s question then.

by Awesome Mike Awesome on Oct 28, 2008 5:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I think having HFA switch back and forth every year is probably more fair than whether or not KC’s best player gets a hit or not in the begining of July. I didn’t really think this was that radical of an opinion.

And yes, I do think Selig has some responsibility in how the players are portrayed. He may actually try to support them, and not treat some of them like periahs when they are about to break the most important ML hitting record. BUt really that was a minor point in my statement. I think it’s probably more relevant that he went from thinking an anomous test was fine one year to the toughest the next. Seems like he missed the boat one way or another there.

And you’re right, as far as I know he didn’t do what he said he was going to do; except of course he actually did do what he originally said he was going to do; but he didn’t do what he then changed his mind to 20 seconds later.

Yes, he did suspend the game; and yes my point was it was ridiculouslly late. If that synchs with your point; then great. I think he made the wrong decision in not doing anything until the field looked like a lake.

I haven’t really found one thing that Selig has done that I think has really worked out. When that field started falling apart, I wonder how many people said “At least we got Bud there to make the right decisions”

Well

the wild card has worked, there’s more parity in the game than there once was, the steroid problem has been addressed and progress has been made, and teams are making boatloads of money.
