BRob and Huff for Derrick Lee +5?

I found this in the comments on MLBTR during their monthly Brob-to-Cubs post:

Huff and Roberts for Derrek Lee, Sean Marshall, Josh Vitters, Jose Ceda, Tony Thomas and Tyler Colvin

The Orioles get a solid 1B in Lee to keep their offense churning from the previous season, as well as a solid young 4/5 lefty to slot into hte rotation. On top of that they get a great pure hitting prospect in Vitters, a potential lockdown closer, a potential quality replacement for Roberts and a good OF prospect. The Orioles would have a good offensive core with Markakis, Jones, Wieters, Rowell, Vitters, Snyder, Thomas, Colvin and Reimold.

The obvious Cubs fan got wood over the lineup they would get.  I could go for Lee, although he ain't cheap, $13M until 2010.  Marshall needs work, and the others are all highly touted A to AA prospects that might be ready in 2-3 years.  We would need to find a whole middle infield and a DH.  Good idea?  Bad idea?

I like it

since we need a shortstop anyway, and will need a DH and a 2B next winter anyways, and I can’t see Roberts sticking around and signing that extension. Throw Ramon into the DH slot and bring up Wieters, and now all of a sudden the farm system looks pretty good, especially with some productive drafts. Plus Marshall helps at least try to shore up the rotation, and we have a little more money to spend on whoever else they’re targeting this winter. But it won’t happen.

I can see BRob sticking around

If we’re willing to pay him. And we still need an SS. And Wieters won’t be ready until mid/late 09 at the earliest, stratospheric rise or not.

I still say we raid the TB fridge for a SS, they have Bartlett, Zobrist and Brignac.

bad idea

There remains a fine chance that the best player we get out of that deal is 33-year old Derrek Lee, who isn’t that great to begin with.

i dunno why the cubs would do it, either

I mean, their in-house 2B guys aren’t great, but DLee can pick it and Huff, well, can’t.

Ehhhh...

…it’s a mixer upper deal. $13 Million/year for Lee is too damn much for too damn long though. It’s basically sunk money, with us eating the contract for the other pieces. Marshall is interesting. Vitters looks like a waste of time at a glance. Jose Ceda ???. Thomas & Colvin are nothing special. Honestly I can’t see us “winning” in this one unless a whole lot of lightning strikes, so I say no.

Vitters

Was the third pick in the country! He is a very highly regarded prospect and would probably rate as the O’s 4th or 5th best prospect.

Looking a lil closer...

…Vitters has a .762 Minor League OPS, albeit in 324 AB, over two years. Still, it’s nothing to get excited about. Colvin has a career .776 minors OPS over three seasons and 1297 AB with good power but below average OBP. Again, nothing to get excited about.

Vitters is also 18

which raises red flags for me. But keep in mind these are guys we can flip to pad trades we might want to make.

Vitters

Probably not fair to judge Vitters on his stats last year when he was just 17. I would get a little excited about a 18 year old 3B who put up a OPS of over 800. Maybe not jumping for joy, but he does look like a very good prospect from those limited numbers and from evaluations. Obviously at his age he’s still somewhat rough and probably difficult to project.

Also, I’d probably worry a little worried that he can field his position or if he’ll have to move to 1B, OF or DH

We would unload $16M for 09

And both guys would be looking at more in an extension. Roberts could be worth it, Huff would be a bigger gamble.

I can't imagine...

…that this deal would be offered by the Cubs. They would completely gut an already deeply flawed farm system. If they do offer it, the Orioles should sign the paperwork asap.

Have DeRosa added into the deal to cover 2B for one year. He’s not much with the leather, but he can hit. Forget Ramon at DH…he can’t hit. Bring up Weiters anyway, move Luke Scott to DH, and give Nolan Reimold a shot in LF.

by sabertooth5185 on Oct 29, 2008 2:02 PM EDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Additionally...

…that would mean that you’d replace Millar, Roberts and Huff in the lineup with Lee, DeRosa, and Reimold. I’d give a slight advantage to last year’s trio…very slight. The improvement represented by adding Marshall to the rotation and the thought of getting a few more good prospects makes the deal seem to sweet to be true.

Lee is almost unmoveable

From his no trade clause to his back. He has serious back issues that are hampering his hitting and fielding.

The Cubs and the O’s have probably talked for a year. The Cubs can assess why they failed (with Al Sorianno being reason number 1-how many more playoffs do we have to watch him fail as a leadoff hitter, its been almost the entire decade now), the O’ should know the Cub system better then their own, Hendry is back and should be a little bit more (hungry, desperate, motivated) to get Roberts.

If the O’s/Cubs dont get this done at the GM meeting, then the push will be to sign Roberts. I dont think you can discuss an extension with him while your shopping him. Of course, if Roberts has already told them no to an extension then I imagine they will just go on shopping him. If you are a rebuilding team, you dont keep him around unless you think your best value for him are draft picks.

I think Roberts situation is one that needs to be clarified pretty quickly. It may effect whether Markasis wants to give up free agent years, if a significant free agent wants to sign. The faster its done, the faster it can be spinned to Nick and free agents.
