Around SBN: Chan Sung Jung Wins Thriller Over Dustin Poirier

"It’s going to start with pitching, and we need to improve our one through five, our starting pitching. I think everything after that will follow suit."

oh, that's all.

We also need to fix our offense from batting slots 4 to 9. And the bullpen, we need 3 or 4 good relievers.

He's kind of right

our bullpen was fine until they got worn out. We had to go deep into it every game. Sarfate, JJ, Sherrill, and maybe Ray make a fine BP more or less (I miss Bradford though).

Our hitting was fairly good overall, despite being craptastic at the beginning and end of the season. 782 is just 12 runs shy of the 800 run threshold. Our offense will get better most likely simply by not having Kevin Millar. Just about any 1st baseman or DH we find will be better. Matt Wieters is coming up some time next season. We could have a 1-2-3-4-5-6-7 of Brian Roberts-Adam Jones-Nick Markakis-Aubrey Huff-Some 1st baseman or DH-Matt Wieters-Luke Scott-Mora-Scrub Shortstop. We could not possibly do any worse offensively from the shortstop position here either. It’s not groundbreaking, but it could be a fine offense.

Our starting pitching is going to be miserable.

Yup, and losing Albers was a big reason why the BP got worn out. If a starter got knocked out early, Albers would pitch the 5th and 6th innings to set the way for JJ in the 8th and Sherrill in the 9th. Once we lost Albers, everybody’s role got stretched out.

thats absolutely true

Albers hopefully will be back, but I realize it’s anybody’s bet whether he’ll be any good. There was a point where we had 5 good relievers (Albers, Sarfate, Bradford, Sherill, and JJ). Lance Cormier was decent as well, although no great shakes. Our bullpen next year probably starts with Sherill, JJ, Sarfate, Chris Ray, Lance Cormier, and Matt Albers if he makes it back and is not made a starter.

I hope and pray we give the axe to Jamie Walker if he doesn’t pitch better in spring training (and maybe even if he does), but that may not happen. That’s seven relievers, and there’s still the possibility that we rule 5 someone.
