Orioles have shot at 2009 World Series title

BetOnline.com already put up their 2009 World Series odds:

Boston Red Sox 3/1
Chicago Cubs 5/1
LA Angels 5/1
Philadelphia Phillies 6/1
New York Yankees 6/1
Tampa Bay Rays 10/1
Chicago White Sox 10/1
New York Mets 12/1
Milwaukee Brewers 15/1
Minnesota Twins 15/1
LA Dodgers 15/1
Toronto Blue Jays 20/1
Detroit Tigers 25/1
Florida Marlins 30/1
Houston Astros 30/1
St. Louis Cardinals 30/1
Cleveland Indians 30/1
Atlanta Braves 30/1
Arizona Diamondbacks 40/1
Colorado Rockies 40/1
Texas Rangers 50/1
Cincinnati Reds 50/1
Oakland Athletics 50/1
San Francisco Giants 80/1
KC Royals 100/1
Baltimore Orioles 100/1
Seattle Mariners 100/1
San Diego Padres 100/1
Pittsburgh Pirates 200/1
Washington Nationals 300/1

So I guess that means we have a shot. These odds are very preliminary, obviously. Frankly I don't see the A's as having that good of a shot. Or the Giants. Like, come on. Those teams are both just as crap as the Orioles.

The only pleasure I can take in this...

is seeing D.C. in dead last with 3X worse odds than Baltimore.

Do you guys think

the Yankees have a better chance of winning the WS than the Rays next year? Does this go by current rosters or the fact that the Yankees can buy Sabathia and Teixeira and whoever else they want?

Not by current rosters...

people are betting on what they think will be the case a year from now, so built into this is the supposition that the Yankees will go and buy themselves a better team in the offseason, just like every other year.

Actually, it’s based on how BetOnline thinks it’s gamblers are going to bet. The odds maker goal is have an equal payout no matter who wins.

These sorts of proposition bets are usually not very good odds and many people that bet just bet on their favorite team; so your more popular teams are going to have higher odds than they probably should.

Good point

This far out it’s more of a popularity contest than anything.

4 of the top 7

Teams in the AL belong to the Eastern Division. Encouraging.

My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

I think this calls for some classic Dumb and Dumber

Lloyd: What are the chances of a guy like you and a girl like me… ending up together?
Mary: Well, that’s pretty difficult to say.
Lloyd: Hit me with it! I’ve come a long way to see you, Mary. The least you can do is level with me. What are my chances?
Mary: Not good.
Lloyd: You mean, not good like one out of a hundred?
Mary: I’d say more like one out of a million.
[pause]
Lloyd: So you’re telling me there’s a chance.

Rays were at 175:1 last year

So there is a chance.

2-21-08 $338 on the Rays to win the Pennant at 95:1 = $32,448. -bet placed by the new Matt Garza Fan Club Preisdent.
