Another baseball source said Wednesday that the Cubs' yearlong efforts to land Baltimore leadoff hitter Brian Roberts aren't dead, suggesting the Orioles might be more willing to move him with only one year left on his contract, pending the outcome of extension talks.

Starting to run out pieces to trade for Roberts
Ceda goes to the Marlins, Gallagher went to the A’s
Pie, Veal, Marshall and Cedeno-doesnt terribly excite me.
I guess if you were really desperate you could ask them to move Hill, Marquis and Chad Gaudin but still. Lets face it, Marshall, Marquis and Gaudin could all go into our rotation and Hill is a wildcard, pun intended.
In the end it may boil down to does Brian want to stay. At some point, if the answer is no you have to judge it against what Matt Holliday went for and what you get versus draft picks. And Brian isnt going to fetch what Holliday was worth in theory.

I didn’t think the Cubs could annoy me any more than their fans already do, but I guess there’s always hope.
Their one prospect that I like: the Vitters kid who was selected before Matt Wieters a year and a half ago.

I don't see how we can trade Roberts
when we’re trying to build a middle infield.
If they wanted to send over Fontenot and Theriot, I’d take it. Short of that, I don’t see them having the chips to play.
Curt never met a buttered roll he didn't like.

um, no
Those guys aren’t that good. Hell, Fontenot was a throw-in on the Sosa deal.

Wait...umm
Mike Fontenot hit .305 with 9 homers, 40 rbis, and 2 sb in 119 games (243 ABs). He was a bench guy that delivered big hits when they were needed and deserves to play every day. Sure, he has his problems with defense, but outside of that he’s definitely good.
And Ryan Theriot’s numbers might not reflect how important he was to the Cubs last year. He played more then good defense at short and delivered timely hits. His OBP (.387) and SLG (.359) certainly aren’t “great”, but they’re well within the realm of good.

If the Orioles trade Roberts I would really like to see us go for a SS or pitching, pitching, pitching…of course you look for the most talent and if Roberts is going to leave you have to do what you have to do.
LF we can find or just use Luke, Luis or Nolan for a while.
As for rebuilding the infield its kind of hard to do if Roberts wont stay.

Maybe trade him midseason
if no extension has been signed?

You’re not going to get anywhere near as much if you trade him as a mid-season rental. If you can’t sign this offseason, he needs to be traded this offseason.

I agree
I still think it’s possible to, if not moved this off season, get more in a trade then on the draft picks after he walks.

Brian won't be traded or extended
He’s gonna walk. That’s my ever so optimistic opinion.
