One less team to steal Teixeira from us? Although I guess Swisher also plays the OF. Somehow this annoys me.

Cool.

Swisher annoys the shit out of me. Putting him on the Yankees just makes things more efficient. One stop shopping.

"The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again."

good grief

The O’s couldn’t top Jeff Marquez to get Swisher. Swisher isn’t nearly as bad as his 2008 season suggests. He’s likely to rebound towards his career averages. His 92 OPS+ last year is already better than anything we’ll run out at 1B next year. Plus, I’ve read he was a bit unlucky last year. Both hm and Olson from Marlins were given away for crap and the O’s sat on their hands.

Definitely seems like a steal for the Yankees

Swisher had a down year but you have to think he’ll rebound.

This trade pisses me off

Not only is is bizzarely stupid for the White Sox to make that trade, but now the value of our trade bait goes down by comparison.

We could have offered that kind of package for Swisher and been better for it

Yeah, i intially thought the same thing as well. GMs just aren’t willing to give up anything of good value in a trade unless a number one starter is being traded. You hear that Andy, get off your Carmona and Cabrera demands!

well, you might be right about that

but, trading B-Rob and Huff for mediocre prospects is a bit less than optimal.

by math_geek on Nov 13, 2008 5:20 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

it is less an optimal

and obviously Huff and Roberts are better players than Swisher, but they’re getting old. Their production will start to decline at some point and it’ll probably start declining before or around the time the O’s are any good. Might as well take the mediocre prospects.

Nothing Kenny Williams does is “bizarrely stupid” anymore if you ask me. Trading FOR Swisher in the first place was bizarrely sane for him.

Swisher is a dipshit

Perfect place for him.

I just

said as much to my buddy (who happens to be a huge ATL fan and won’t let me speak the name of a certain SD pitcher for fear that I may jinx him). At first I really wasn’t sure how I felt about Swisher but the more I think about him the less I like him. I hope they think that’s all they need to compete. Of course I’ve read the rumors that CC will get a massive offer from them. That will surely skew the rest of the offseason if that is the case.

This means the Y*nkees now have like 7 OFs.

Swisher
Damon
Nady
Cabrera
Matsui
Abreu
and there’s one other guy I’m forgetting…

So, either there’s to be a huge trade off of surplus OF’s, or the MFY think they’ve got 1B covered with all these extra guys. Not to mention that Posada could land there at some point in the near future to prolong his career. Making a run at Teixeira wouldn’t make much sense.

Justin Christian.

Maybe they’re going to try to deal away someone else for pitching. God knows they need it.

is abreu definitely coming back?

What up?

by snakethejake on Nov 13, 2008 10:35 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

abreu is a free agent

matsui kinda stinks. I doubt the yanks trust Melky. Xavier Nady is a backup. Damon is old.

And they still could sign Tex, too.

Isn't Swisher gonna play first though?

Nonetheless, its still a huge logjam. Melky Cabrera may be seeing some time in the minors next year.

Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

Only the Yankees

add a guy like Swisher with that glut of talent. That annoys me. The problem is the Orioles dont have prospects to move and are you really sure Nolan Reimold isnt Nick Swisher anyway?

The actual key player in the deal for the White Sox was Betemit. Losing Crede and really being undecided on Josh Fields led more to this move as much as the fact that both Billy Beane and now Kenny Williams have decided to pass on Swisher who is signed for the next three years at fair value if you believe he is better then this year but could be a problem contract if he isnt. Of course, contracts like Swisher and Marte are just petty cash if they dont work out in NY.

This move may speak more about Bobby Abreu’s stature then anything. I suspect the Yankees would love Abreu to get a multi year offer from someone else. If they offer arbitration and he accepts that would be a heck of a glut. The Yankees still lack a CF. Melky Cabrera isnt the real answer and the other outfielder missing is Bret Gardner who doesnt strike me as anything more then a PR for the Yankees. The Yankees dont play Brandon Fahey types in the OF. The Yankees will probably wind up with Mike Cameron to join Sabathia ( I am starting to suspect if CC plays it just a bit coy he can get the Yankees to offer an 8 year deal at 25m- Zito got seven years and the Yankees are -already talking 6 at 25). The Yankees could trade M. Cabrera and lets say I. Kennedy for Cameron.

So lets say at the end the Yankee OF looks like this:

Damon (one year left)
Swisher (back up first if Tex passes)
Nady
Cabrera (traded or minors)
Matsui (dh if healthy)
Abreu (yankees hope he goes to free agency)
Gardner (minors)
Cameron

I will tell you that OF doesnt scare me a bit and maybe the Swisher deal indicates that they dont see signing Tiexeria as a given.

bench player

I think Swisher will find himself on the bench but backing up really old OFers (Damon and Matsui, namely).

He could also be part of the Yankee plan to have more money on their bench than the entire Marlin payroll.

He'll probably be at first, I think

What other options do they have? Posada?

by Dr Orpheus on Nov 14, 2008 12:18 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

teixeira

I think Teixeira, like Sabathia, will be donning Yankee jerseys to break in the new stadium. Hank Steinbrenner is going to go all steinbrenner on ’em, I believe.

and if they sign Tex

they can always flip Swisher again. Some loser in the Tex sweepstakes will be needing a 1Bman.
