Re: Sabathia...I'm just sayin'....
Sabathia with Cleveland (i.e., the American League) had an ERA of 3.83 and a WHIP of 1.32. It wasn't until he played for Milwaukee and got a free out every time through the order that those numbers came down.
I'm not saying the guy isn't a great pitcher, but $137M? Really.
Don't the Yankees actually play in the American League?

yeah, but
to the Yankees it’s like monopoly money anyway. He’s exponentially better than AJ Burnett or whomever else, and if the Yankees pay $10 million more than they have to, that’s still only two or three percent of their payroll.
Having said that, it is a lot of money. I wish my last name was Sabathia, but unfortunately it’s not.

Doesn't automatically mean he'll accept
He might take a little less to continue pitching to teams with 8 man lineups.
There are NL teams (NYM, LAD) in need of starting pitching & willing to over pay for it.

If the Dodgers had that kind of money
They would’ve offered more than 2/45 to Manny. Even if you the triple the time and money on that contract, it’s still lower than what the Yankees offered a pitcher. It’s not even remotely fair, but that’s baseball.
My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

I hear it's basically California or the Yankees
Cuz the Mets are unlikely to outbid the Yanks and he’s a Cali guy at heart.

Well, in the year 2007
this same CC Sabbathia pitched in the American League and found himself with a Cy Young award at the end of the year…so, there’s that.

Yeah, well
Erik Bedard pitched pretty well in 2007 as well, IIRC.

2006 – ERA+ 140
2007 – ERA+ 143
2008 – ERA+ 162
$137 is on target.

Being fat and drunk is only a problem if you aren’t getting guys out. David Wells was fat and drunk and it was never much of a problem.

He's still pitching...
… so one could argue it applies with him as well.
Nobody said anything about pitching well.

if a pitcher is going to get paid
its CC and the Yankees have money to burn.
With Peavy back on the table dont be surprised if Hughes and Kennedy wouldnt get that deal done if Peavy agrees.
Line them up CC, Peavy, Burnett, Lowe, Wang Chamberlain (Moose or Pettitte cant crack the rotation, lol). Contract wise Peavy might have a little CC envy. Hell Burnett and Lowe might have better contracts then Peavy when its done. I am sure Brian Cashman wouldnt mind if he had to give Peavy a bit more $$. Same strategy he is using on CC.
I am not sure why everyone thinks the Pads are just going to dump Peavy for nothing. The big money in his contract is in the out years and if Towers holds Peavy into the season he just asks the Yanks or Red Sox to put some cash in the deal to cover the rental.
I will be shocked if we arent in awe of the Yankee staff once the season starts. Hell, Chamberlain could be back in the pen.

The way Chamberlin looks
he could be back in the pigpen…
I’ll be surprised if the MFY lands one of them, shocked if they get both Peavy and CC.

Assuming Peavy demands that the club option be waived to accept a trade (which is likely), that means the Yanks will be give up Hughes and Kennedy to get one year of Peavy. That would seem to be a big mistake for the Yankees in my opinion. After they sign him to an extension, you are looking at a starting rotation around $100M+/year. I know people like to think that they have no limit to their spending, but I think that’s a little unrealistic. Not to mention that it would give them very little flexibility when one of them gets hurt or can’t produce.
Yankees need to keep their promising youngsters, not trade them away for even more high priced contracts.

Which of course I was completely wrong about Peavy's contract
But still; to add 3 big name FA’s + 1 via trade to that rotation seems like a stretch

Have you seen...
…how many Wall Street firms are going belly up or laying off tens of thousands? This money to burn might already be ashes.
