Tigers, Reds interested in Ramon Hernandez
http://masnsports.com/index_blog_roch.html
As for catching, the word on the street is that the Tigers and Reds are interested in Ramon Hernandez, and have expressed it to team president Andy MacPhail.
I don't expect either team would offer much in return - it would be a miracle to get either team to pay all of Ramon's salary next year.
The problem with trading Ramon is that there is no way you can credibly keep Wieters down in AAA for a few weeks (to buy that extra year of club control) when Quiroz is the best catching option.
How about Camden Chat favorite Greg Zaun as a stopgap?

Did you know?
Zaun is Dempsey’s nephew.

I wonder
Would we hear that more or less if Zaun is an Oriole?
Obviously that fun fact would be hammered into our heads for the first few weeks of the season, but they can’t say it every freaking day. Maybe they’ll finally get it our of their system.

Please be true.
Only problem is Ramon could be a class A free agent if we keep playing him (Currently, he was the top rated Type B player at Catcher)

So we’d actually have to get something for him since we could cash him in for a pick next year. Nevertheless, he’d look great on someone else’s team..

Eh
He’d have to have a rebound year to get to type A status, and even if he did, $8MM is a lot to pay for two draft picks.
If anyone is willing to take on his salary, send him packing.

Give Hernandez away. Ask for a bag of potting soil.
But not the crappy stuff, the nice, dark, soft, spongey stuff that you swear you could nap on.

If the pitchers are fine with Quiroz, I’m fine with him starting a month in order to delay Wieter’s arb clock. It’s only a month and the O’s aren’t going to playoffs anyways.

Absolutely
Didn’t exactly hurt the Rays last year with Longoria, did it?

Hard to see
the Tigers adding the payroll so they would need financial assistance. If we give that there should be some prospect. Same with the Reds.
If Ramon became a type A in 2009 for the O’s that would most likely mean Weiters stayed in the minors most of the year (which I am ok with). I dont want to give his years away to easily. Of course, Ramon would be playing for his next contract so would it surprise you if he suddenly had a good year?
Zaun could come here. Have no problem with that on a one year deal.

Isn't
Zaunn related to someone on the O’s?

I've heard that somewhere
but I think it’s just an urban myth. Kinda like the dorky kid on the Wonder Years grew up to be Marilyn Manson.

Yeah, that’s a good point. I could see Ramon getting off his lazy ass and putting up a respectable year in order to cash in.

I am torn with this one
I’ll really try not to be snarky or mean (I know, it’s hard for me), but I can go both ways on this. I would love to unload Ramon and use Quizno’s as a stopgap ONLY if we get a decent haul back for him and don’t have to pay the majority of his salary. If we can not get the good haul, let’s keep him and hopefully he can have a solid season, since he is playing for his contract.

i don't know about a GOOD haul...
but maybe contract swap w/ the tigers for nate robertson? i mean, he was awful last year, but he’s had some okay numbers in the past, 17 mill over two years isn’t terrible for a back end guy these days and he’s only 30. i dunno. anyone think harang could be pried loose? he’d also be two years for sure and was donkey shit last year, but was (pre-seattle meltdown) bedard-esque over his previous 2/3 in cinci.

I made the assumption that it was supposed to be good bedard, but bedard-esque to me will always be getting hurt right before crunch time.
What up?

bedard-esque
Lefthanded and presumably crafty?

crafty?
Bedard throws pretty damn hard, at least when he’s healthy
by pipkin on Nov 20, 2008 7:39 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
what is he, though?
i guess crafty really does conjure up more an image of jamie moyer or trax or somesuch, but although bedard gets fair share of Ks, he’s not really a power pitcher either, nor a finesse guy. he definitely has a good fastball and dynamite breaking stuff…what do you call a guy like that? stuffy?

crafty!
I thought the only requirement to be crafty was to be lefthanded. Perhaps you have to throw like a girl too! In which case neither Bedard nor Matusz would be crafty. Damnit. So now the craftiness torch lies on the shoulder of Burres?

Hernandez for Robertson or D Willis
actually makes some sense. I know they both look terrible. Still, how many times have we seen pitchers rebound.
Lets look at a couple of quick ones: Cliff Lee and some guy named Dempster.
Both Robertson and Willis have had previous success. Still pitching in the AL East isnt where pitchers like this go for comebacks.
I will leave this up to the Orioles scouts to weigh in on. I do believe both pitchers have two years left so its not as easy as swapping dead money. The second year would be the Oriole risk if neither pitcher ever resembles a starting pitching again. Robertson is owed 17 mil and Willis 20 mill for two years.
I would still go with get prospect first as my hunch is both of these pitchers have been on the pitching regression path over the past two seasons. In the end they only thing they may do is make us appreciate Daniel Cabrera.

The Tigers would have to pay the entire second year for either contract for this to make sense.

robertson and willis?
Damn the Tigers have some problems. Good thing they have the Cabrera guy, he’s pretty good.

True
that is why the Lugo deal makes more sense as he is owed 20 million.
Generally when you want to pick up pitchers off the scrap heap better to do it with ones that dont have 10 million anchors attached.
Maybe the O’s could split the second year and get a prospect. The kid Joyce looks like a player yet the Tigers dont have a spot as currently configured. Larish might be another player they would want to take a flyer on. Got to get creative.

Ramon for Lugo might make sense if the RS pick up some of Lugo’s salary in ‘10 and they can’t land a catcher from Rangers.

Whatever we need to do...
to get rid of Ramon Hernandez sounds good to me. Watching his feeble attempt to play catcher made me ill during the 08 season. I have seen Wieters play in person numerous times and he is the real deal (not that many people were disputing that). If we need to use GQ as a stop-gap for a month(s), then fine, just get Ramon’s oversized ass and even bigger salary out of town please!!
