Around SBN: Cal RB Jahvid Best Seriously Injured, Carted Off Field

Congratulations, I guess. Kevin Youkilis, Joe Mauer, Justin Morneau, and Carlos Quentin also received some votes.

Pedroia's line - .326 BA/.376 OBP/.493 SLG/50 BB/52 K/17 HR/83 RBI/118 R/Plays for Boston. Gold glove winner, posted a VORP of 63.3 and stole twenty bases as well.

Morneau's line - .300 BA/.374 OBP/.499 SLG/76 BB/85 K/23 HR/129 RBI/97 R. Not as good defensively, his team didn't make the playoffs and he had a VORP of 47.2.

Edit: Mauer's line - .328 BA/.413 OBP/.451 SLG/84 BB/50 K/9 HR/85 RBI/98 R with a VORP of 57.1. An outstanding defensive catcher who swings the bat to get on base.

The real story here is that Aubrey Huff juuust edged out Jason Bartlett and Mike Mussina for 16th place overall in the voting.

He plays for Boston

What more reason do you need?

What's was Mauer's VORP?

I'll give you the line

.328 BA/.413 OBP/.451 SLG/84 BB/50 K/9 HR/85 RBI/98 R with a VORP of 57.1.

Writers don’t like the lack of power, apparently.

My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

I love that Rob Neyer is free (for now).
This season Mauer became the first catcher in major league history to win two batting titles. He finished second in the American League in on-base percentage. He won a Gold Glove. Measured by Baseball Prospectus’ Wins Above Replacement Player (which considers defense), Mauer finished a close second to Pedroia. Measured by Bill James’ Win Shares (which also considers defense, along with clutch hitting), Mauer finished first in the American League, with Pedroia a couple of wins behind. Measured by Win Probability Added (no defense, but clutch hitting especially), Mauer finished first in the league, with Pedroia eighth.

Mauer beat Mr. Necklaces in two out of three well respected metrics. But yet, Mauer finishes FOURTH. I’m not saying Mr. Douchebag didn’t have a great year. He did, but Mauer deserved more respect.

Congrats to the little guy

It took a late-season surge and a weak field of candidates on contenders, but Pedroia isn’t a terrible pick for MVP.

And to think

just a few months ago it was “delusional” in your words! How times change!

he did say a late season surge....

You’re still delusional.

So while Pedroia was awarded the MVP award

he was actually THE most valuable player

OK, Congratulations to Pedroyer, he said through gritted teeth.

Just kidding. There have been less qualified douchebags named MVP, so hey:

Na zdorov’e! from the three of us.

Is this a joke?

I thought April Fool’s Day was in April.

Honestly though, this is the most egregious example of how fucking far out of whack baseball awards have become as a result of this PHN bullshit. A pygmie with a sub-.500 SLG, sub-.400 OBP and sub-20 HR season wins the fucking MVP??? Un-fucking believable. It’s not the overachiever award people…or the “Look, lil Dusty can play too.” award . MVP means Most Valuable Player.

Oh and no congratulations, Pedroia. You don’t deserve it. Now go get your fucking shinebox!

3rd in the league in VORP

and 1st in WARP. But I agree, totally egregious.

just wanted to note he left off a data point that didn't support his argument

and AMA isn’t going anywhere.

Zartan says, "Sign Dan Johnson."

by birdman on Nov 21, 2008 12:54 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

What

My argument is that there’s nothing EGREGIOUS about Pedroia as MVP. Finishing eighth in anything that measures goodness supports that argument. So thanks for your help, pal.

by Awesome Mike Awesome on Nov 21, 2008 1:51 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Dude, I’m not even attacking, or for that matter, disagreeing you. Seriously. chill. If you see my fifth post down, I said Pedroia had a great year. I don’t have a problem with him being MVP. I just noted that you did not mention that one metric that made Pedroia look the worst. Okay?

Zartan says, "Sign Dan Johnson."

by birdman on Nov 21, 2008 2:13 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

chill?

what? You said something that made no sense. Who said you were attacking anything? Jeez Louise.

by Awesome Mike Awesome on Nov 21, 2008 3:05 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

You said something that made no sense.

I just said that you left off one metric, WPA, which portrayed Pedrioia in the least favorable. If that is not understableble to you then cool, whatever.

Zartan says, "Sign Dan Johnson."

by birdman on Nov 21, 2008 4:59 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

And it made no sense

because I was needling ol’ Jonny Poops, who evidently believes Pedroia was an “egregious” choice. Your comment would make eminent sense if my position were that Pedroia was the right or only choice for MVP, which it is not. You see? That is why I said thanks for the help, because your data point DID support my argument. That is understableble.

by Awesome Mike Awesome on Nov 21, 2008 5:09 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

fine, whatever
Your comment would make eminent sense if my position were that Pedroia was the right or only choice for MVP, which it is not. You see?

Just pointing out that you ignored a metric, don’t see what’s the big deal.

Why do you bother? It’s like asking a fish to tapdance.

by Jonny Pops on Nov 21, 2008 3:20 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I suppose

it’s better to be like you and run off at the mouth to various degress of nonsense and outright refuse to back it up…mostly because you simply cannot.

by Awesome Mike Awesome on Nov 21, 2008 3:42 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It's funny

Because I go out of my way when shooting the breeze with AMA to be polite and use non-inflammatory language. I threw out what I thought was a rather innocent and minor comment and the conversation still manages to devolve into his typical of condension (see below), sarcasm, or “jeez louise” signs of frustration. I thought he would just say something, “It’s just one metric” in response to my original comment about WPA and that would be the end of the conversation. But instead the conversation devolves into how I make no sense, blah, blah, blah.

Zartan says, "Sign Dan Johnson."

by birdman on Nov 21, 2008 5:07 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

This is exactly my point.

It’s a fruitless exercise.

by Jonny Pops on Nov 21, 2008 11:48 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

No

I believe your point is more like “All the statistics say I’m wrong, but I’m a jackass and have my mind made up, so…la la la, I can’t hear you.” That is more accurate.

Let's be serious here....

…Would anybody pick this guy #1 out of AL players in a fantasy draft? If you say yes, you’re either a liar or a Red Sox fan, which is often the same thing (in fairness all fans lie to themselves, just not as much as Red Sox fans). Would Pedroia go in Round One? I seriously doubt it – again, unless the Draft is taking place amongst New Englanders. This is a Round Two or Three pick in a fantasy draft (depending on how many teams you have) who just won the MVP. It’s silly to even discuss this shit.

by Jonny Pops on Nov 21, 2008 9:21 AM EST up reply actions   0 recs

And yet

many statistics say he was among the ten, or five, or three, or ONE most valuable players in the league! How dare they give him the MVP! Everyone knows it’s an award for the top fantasy player. That’s why Chone Figgins always finishes so high.

And WAIT. What is this? According to Yahoo’s fantasy rankings, he was the sixteenth most valuable fantasy player in baseball last year for a league using R, HR, RBI, SB and AVG? That’s terrible! BUT WAIT. There were only two AL players ahead of him??? (Josh Hamilton and A-Rod). IT CANNOT BE.

Would you like to someday deal in the facts or is this working for you?
