Sweet Jesus, are the Yankees insane?
According to the NY Post, they are preparing offers to Sabathia AND Burnett... with the idea of landing them both:
The Yankees, according to several industry insiders, spent yesterday preparing an offer - perhaps a five-year deal worth about $80 million - for Toronto righty A.J. Burnett. This would come after they offered Milwaukee lefty CC Sabathia a six-year contract worth between $140 million and $145 million.
So, at $16M per year for A.J., and $24M per year for CC, they would have $40M invested in TWO pitchers.... which is just a little less than what the entire Rays team made last year.
Dear New Yorkers: You might see ticket prices goin' a little berzerk the next few years.

Right now its a pittance.

The more they spend, the worse they do. To lock Burnett up for 5 years seems like a bit of a mistake to me. And committing $285M for just two players could handicap them for years to come.
Of course if both pitch well and stay healthy it could be brilliant.

Give me the odds...
on Burnett making 30 starts for each of the next 3 seasons and Sabbathia making 30 starts for the next 5 season. You just KNOW Burnett’s gonna get hurt/suck and Sabbathia’s gonna turn into the pitching equivalent of Miguel Cabrera weight-wise, and a corresponding decline in production. Maybe not Barry Zito numbers, but not worth what he will get paid by year 4.

If Burnett was a goaltender
there would be teams willing to sign him for 15 years – well, one team

well...
apparently, the talk of 5/80 is being shot down by yankees brass. offer looks more along the lines of 5/13.5, or so sayeth another ny press outlet.
they’re playing a dangerous game and they know it. i think, realistically, they get ONE pitcher who will require several years and multiple millions and it’s probably burnett or lowe.
anyone hear anything about ben sheets? sort of surprising to me NO ONE’S talking about him.

Cashman has been waiting
80 million in payroll is coming off their books from 2008. They have a new stadium and a sports network that just keeps giving.
So 25 mill for CC and 16 for Burnett leaves them plenty to add Lowe and Tex or whoever they really want. Damon will drop off next year and give them “more” flexibility. The only thing the Yanks cant do is make the player sign with them. Its no secret CC wants California or maybe even Milwaukee. And Tex could go to the Angels and Lowe to Boston and AJ to Toronto or Baltimore.
My gosh, the Yankees will have Confederate money…..
yeah surre….

I love it
The Rays, I’m sure no one forgets, won the American League this year.
The Yankees missed the playoffs.
And now they decide to be MORE like the Yankees. THE SUPER YANKEES of 2009, who will FAIL even MORE SPECTACULARILLY.

We can only hope...
that you are correct in your assessment of the upcoming season. It seems though that Hank and Hal may be even worse than dear ol’ dad. I don’t think these pukes will be satisfied until the Bronx Blowers win every major championship in the world, including the upcoming Malaysian National Cricket Open!!
