Markakis Extension Update
Baltimore Sun - The Orioles have had discussions with outfielder Nick Markakis about a contract extension.
Markakis' agent Jamie Murphy said he has had "active talks" with team president Andy MacPhail as recently as Monday.
He is eligible for arbitration for the first time this offseason and cannot be a free agent until 2011
I'm a little suprised they haven't reach an agreement yet. One of the most underpaid players last season needs to get his paper up Andy.

This one will get done
Here is why. Markasis is willing to do it.
Look at Rios in Toronto. Chase Utley, although at a different position, may be another benchmark in terms of mixing arb years and free agent years.
But it will get done. Probably after the winter meetings. Lets remember we havent had a contract negotiater apparently for a time. Maybe this will be Wayne’s first big job to finish up.

Newest, c'mon.
He cant go anywhere for at least three years. That aint the newest.
I suspect Nick might go five years and still be primed for another free agent opportunity at the ripe age of 29.

you're probably right
and ya know what? good for him. You make the majors at the age he did and you should get paid like a prince.
Well, “should” might not be the right world. But “will” sure is. And you might as well maximize that while still getting rich (meaning you get rich and then still set yourself to really cash in when that’s over).

The O’s will do everything to make sure that Nick has a guaranteed contract. Whatever he gets you know damn well it is what he deserves. Any team will take an outfielder who hits 20 homeruns a season plus is able to lead the league in assists. His defense is what makes him so special.

Lets just hope
no feelings are hurt in the process. I can’t be havin’ Nick hold a grudge against our front office. Its not an arbitration hearing, but still…
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

That big poster
The O’s have a 20-foot by 40-foot poster of Markakis outside the warehouse displaying the new out of town jersey. If they weren’t going to extend his contract, that poster would have been of Adam Jones or Jeremy Guthrie.
