Prediction
Popular Vote
Obama – 52%
McCain – 47%
Other – 1%
Electoral Vote
Obama – 335+
I’m not buying this bullshit that the liberals are going to sweep the Congressional races; obvious weak links like Dole are going to be phased out, but this widespread ousting of the Republican Party is trash if you ask me. Relatively speaking.

But the leaders of their party could not be any more liberal. I wouldn’t exactly call Reid/Pelosi/Obama centrist-left.

Party leaders don’t matter as much as they used to in the days of political machines, but minority/majority leaders do still have substantial push and pull.

they certainly could be more liberal
America’s two-party system results in a relatively centrist political process, and America is still right-of-center when you consider other “First World” nations.

huh?
What’s outdated? Disgust over the two-party system? Aside from brief interludes resulting either from the collapse of one party or the rise of smaller, issue-oriented third parties we’ve never had an alternative. Certainly not a stable one.
Or about right-of-center? Europe is shifting to the right, yes, especially on economic matters. American is still much more socially conservative than peer nations.

Does liberal mean
educated, intelligent, thoughtful, open-minded, non-bigoted, not controlled by the lunatic fringe christian right, and believing that government is an agent of good?
by O'sFan21 on Nov 5, 2008 11:03 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
No.
For example, Thomas Jefferson was obviously all of those things, yet he certainly would not fit into the contemporary definition of “liberal.”
by PhilR8 on Nov 5, 2008 11:49 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
and actually...
it might be a stretch to say that jefferson thought of the government as an agent of good.
in fact, if you consider jefferson and jackson to be the two early big time dems and lincoln and roosevelt the early republicans, you can see that maybe things have flipped a bit.

Considering that the alternative to government
was despotic rule…. I think Jefferson loved the idea of government as an agent of good. He wasn’t an anarchist. Only anarchists see government as agents of, uh, “bad.” Jefferson liked government – limited government.

The latter
I think that idea was somewhat valid pre 2007, but now I think that it’s just antiquated. Not only is Europe drifting further to the right, but America is also becoming progressively liberal. Having a consummate conservative president pass an $800+ billion dollar bailout package is not my idea of a centrist-right country. Take a look at this election cycle: a liberal versus an ultra liberal. I don’t think these things are set in stone, but at the moment, America is not a conservative leaning country in my eyes.

By whose definition? Fox News? Name me one piece of legislation Pelosi, Reid or Obama has pushed that has been a significant departure from what the corporate lobby wants. Just one. Bear in mind their opposition and those that support them are the most far right political party in terms of economics in any industrialized democracy on Earth. These people called Bill Clinton a liberal. The most conservative Democratic President of the past 60 years at least. But for whatever reason, these stupid labels stick…probably because people are too lazy to learn about what they’re talking about when it come to politics.

Well said.
And, since we’re shooting the bull on politics, a gem from Curt Schilling’s blog, 38 Pitches:
“(Anyone wishing to use this as a reason for me to vote against him can zip it, I don’t have a job, I am likely retired, and the tax threshold means squat to me. I am now a small business owner in a start up and there is nothing he’s proposed that is going to help me hire new employees or maintain the best health care coverage in the industry my company is in. I’m going to have to do that despite him if he’s elected)”
Mwaa haaa . . . Curt Schilling, worried about taxes? Alright, I get that. I was reading today that agents are already considering the tax consequences of Obama’s election on their clients’ contracts, but Schilling worried because he’s a “small business owner”? He’s got more money than all of us combined! Ain’t nothin’ small about him!

How much do you know about stem cell research?
My knowledge base is pretty slim, but at least I am aware of the following.
Most people opposed to it are not specifically opposed to the research as a whole. Just that portion that entails use of cells harvested from embryos. (Interesting term that – harvesting.)
Embryonic stem cells are not the only ones available for research. Although they initially showed the most promise early on, continuing research is now apparently getting good results with other forms of stem cells. (I say apparently because my only current source for this is a recent piece on NPR. I didn’t do any follow on research.)
Being opposed to the use of “disgarded” embyros for research does not classify one as a lunatic. Exactly what is it that is patently invalid about the belief that life starts at the moment of conception? It was not too long ago that people argued that a life did not become a “person” until the moment of birth. Yet today I personally know kids who are running around that didn’t make it through the end of the 2nd trimester. Who knows, perhaps someday our knowledge will extend to the point that a newly fertilized egg can be maintained outside of the womb until it is ready to be “born”. Who then will be on the “right” side of that argument?

I don’t care how much money someone has… or how they made it (as long as it was legally)… there’e no room for punishing hard work, and being successful. I just don’t understand how taxing those who make more than 250,000 (or is it 125,000 now) is “fair.”

If we could just move tax rates back to the last time the economy GREW jobs and the government ran a yearly surplus, would you take it?
Congratulations, you’ve just endorsed Barack Obama’s plan to return the tax rates back to the Clinton rates of the 1990s.
Seriously, for those above $250,000 all he’s doing is going back to the Clinton tax rates. And he’s keeping the Bush tax cuts for everyone below that. So apparently, 35% is capitalism, but 38.5% is socialism.

People who make over 125,000 a year
are taxed less than those below in terms of percentage. It changes to a flat amount. Thus someone who makes 38 million dollars a year is taxed the same as someone who makes 125,000 a year. What he wants to do isn’t punishing people with more money. Its making them pay the same percentage as someone who pulls in minimum wage.

U.S. Election on Moscow Radio: A Nice Moment
Garry Kasparov, democratic politician and former world chess champion, commenting early yesterday morning on Radio Echo-Moscow (as he was watching CNN’s big board): "Look, he’s taking Virginia. Obama is taking Virginia!! Do you know what this means?!?"
I grew up in Virginia, when restaurants, theaters and other businesses were segregated for White and Colored users. When authorities closed a county school system rather than integrate it. When a white man could be physically ejected from a court of law for sitting with black people in the courtroom— as happened to my father.
Yes, I have a sense of what it means. And I was glad to hear that someone famous and respected here did as well. So glad I found I had to wipe my glasses.

Obama and VA
I spent most of the evening flicking between NBC and CBS. At one point, both had cut in with local coverage (WBAL and WJZ), so I jumped over to Comedy Central just in time to see William and Mary grad Jon Stewart call Virginia for Obama. It was a pretty cool moment.
I work in DC, and one of my coworkers lives in Northern Virginia (a.k.a. “Communist Country”). He was talking about all the razzing he’s gotten over the years from friends in Maryland, and how the results of the past few elections (2006 and 2008) have finally given him some equal footing with them.

You’re welcome to take Lieberman off our hands. In fact, you can have him right now, if you want.
I live in Connecticut, and we’re trying to figure out a way to have Joe recalled (ala Gray Davis).
Thanks everybody above who worked to secure this great victory. I was living in a state where the outcome was pretty much assured, so I did as much as I could to help the “down ticket” candidates. And, it must’ve worked, because New England now has no Republican representatives in the U.S. House. Speaking from the Democrat-turned-Libertarian point of view...
I don’t like taxes. No one does. I think they should be lowered across the board for everyone. But I didn’t buy into the Joe the Plumber fantasy that I’ll ever have a quarter mil to buy my own business. Not. Gonna. Happen. So I really don’t worry too much about Ds taking away money that I’ll never have.
As for the “culture war” nonsense, from my point of view Palin is the gift that keeps on giving. The Voodoo People, the Snake Handlers & the Flying Monkeys will have a hard time being taken seriously by very many people after her.
But what really motiviates me is foreign policy. I don’t think wars should be fought because of a president’s oil lust, personal vanity or unresolved daddy issues. You go to war when you’ve been attacked & then ONLY against those who attacked you. No exceptions.
So I could have voted for Barr in the belief that when Obama claimed to oppose “dumb wars” he was being as phoney as the semi-evolved simian who promised a “humble foreign policy”. But instead I decided to trust him & come back to the Ds for the 1st time in 16 years.
And now it’s just a matter of waiting. Let’s see how he does.
You can't fix stupid. Stupid is forever.
