Bleed Cubbie Blue wants us to send Huff and Scott to Chi-town
or so they say:
To replace Lee, it will require a trade and a free agent signing; I'm going to suggest a platoon, and there's a reason for that. First, acquire Aubrey Huff from the Orioles. Yes, I'm aware that it's nearly impossible to trade with the dithering Andy MacPhail, but I'm guessing it'd be relatively easy to take Huff's contract ($8 million in 2009) off MacPhail's hands. Send them Sean Marshall, Ronny Cedeno, Michael Wuertz and Micah Hoffpauir for Huff and Luke Scott, who's in line for a large raise as an arb-eligible player in 2009. While Huff had a fine year playing full-time, as a platoon player he'd be even better -- he hit .321/.382/.607 vs. RHP. You'd be giving the Orioles a rotation starter, a starting SS, a strong setup man, and someone who could replace Huff at DH (Hoffpauir). They already have a replacement for Scott in Luis Montanez, the former Cub #1 draft pick at SS who, shockingly, has apparently reinvented himself as a power-hitting outfielder. This deal makes sense for both teams, and later, you'll find out the reason I want Scott. See below, also, for Huff's platoon partner.
Say whaaaaaaat?
Well, at least it nets us a SP.

I want more for Huff and Scott
but either way, the Cubs still won’t win the WS

ugh
Typical fan trade talk, where they want good things and give up things they’re clearly and absurdly overvaluing.
Cedeno is 26 and didn’t hit this year. His level of not hitting this year was better than it has been in past years, but he still did not hit. He can’t hit.
Micah Hoffpauir is a 29-year old AAA slugger that found his power stroke in Iowa a bit late, and after a couple of tries. Hoffpauir is as likely to “replace Huff as a DH” as Jon Knott or Jason Botts.
Michael Wuertz is a pretty OK reliever. Sean Marshall is the only part of the package worth anything, really.
The Orioles would be giving up two of their better hitters to get back one guy, essentially, that might help build us a rotation, plus a spare part reliever we don’t really need, a failed prospect, and a minor league power hitter closing in on 30. I’ll pass on giving the Cubs a couple of major league hitters in exchange for a mix-and-match, $2.99 pack of 50 random baseball cards; you know, the type where you put Mark McGwire up front and sandbag the buyer with a lot of Arthur Rhodes and Shinjo cards.
Al also wants Alex Cintron (?) and Kevin Millar (?). I don’t think Al saw either of them play this year.

While I'll agree
Wuertz was a dominant reliever for the last three seasons. Guy’s slider is a thing of beauty.
The rest is true. If they’re going to do anything like this it would take Marshall, Tony Thomas, and Wuertz to get Huff.
Hoffpauir and Cedeno are fairly worthless at this point.
dominant?
ERAs of 2.66, 3.48, 3.63? Gives up hits and walks guys (WHIPs of 1.25, 1.37, 1.43). He is OK. He’s not anything special.

LUIS MONTANEZ STINKS WE'VE BEEN OVER THIS
this is a dumb dumb trade
and Reimold would hopefully be in line to take over for Luuuuke.
Maybe we should throw in Markakis too

one thing i saw that got me thinking...
is that if the cubs can pull off a trade for peavey they’d be looking to dump some salary. maybe a guy like marquis.
now, marquis is not great, but 1) another pitcher posting a roughly 100 ERA+ would be a vast improvement, 2) he’d be pretty cheap for a pitcher of that caliber for this year (a tick under 10 million) and 3) his contract only runs through the year.

100 ERA+ would be our #2

not really...
i look at like this:
the orioles scored a lot of runs last year, but also gave up a shitload. look at a team like the yankees: they scored about as many runs (7 more) and they’re top pitcher (if we’re going by era +) was moose, who was marginally better than guts. next best was wang w/ 106, then the next guy that even sniffs 100 has a 95. therefore, i’d suggest that the o’s could make a pretty drastic improvement by just having a league average rotation.
there’s plenty of ways to figure they could equal or exceed last year’s offensive output.

I don't disagree
A league average rotation would be a huge improvement; but if your #2 has a 100 ERA+; then you probably don’t have a league average staff. I don’t dislike the idea at all of brining in someone like Marquis.
Also, you’d probably also need to include Joba in there; he started for about half the year.

true...
though joba and wang don’t even really make up a full season of starts for one pitcher (27 b/w them as opposed to 33-35 for one).

huh huh...

Brian Roberts for Fausto Carmona and Asdrubal Cabrera
Wow. This seems like a bit of a stretch. Carmona would be awesome, however, but I doubt the Os would insist on a guy like Cabrera instead of an nearly ready infield prospect.
just posted this in another thread
Bit of a stretch is a nice way to put it. Andy is off his rocker.

Jeff Ballard won 18 games once, too. (Carmona’s good season was a lot better than Ballard’s, I know.)

Winning 18 games means the rest of the team did their job
Sure, he had a rough season in ‘08 but he was also hurt for most of it. I’m just all about getting a sinkerballer in Camden Yards. So many ground balls…they’d have to get a new left side of the infield for him to work though.
I’m all about it not costing Brian Roberts to get Fausto Carmona after a God awful season, unproven as to whether or not ‘07 was a fluke, and Asdrubal Cabrera, who don’t impress-a me much, oh oh oh oh. People act like MacPhail’s crazy to ask for those two for Roberts, but Roberts is the guy that actually had a good season. (The Indians players are much younger, you idiot!) Oh I’m aware. Crazy like a fox…

Unless I’m mistaken, Carmona was hurt. Hurt players tend to perform poorly. UNLESS, there’s some long term health problems associated with Carmona, asking for him and Cabrera, a decent, cheap, and young 2B, is just crazy.
Zartan says, "Sign Dan Johnson."
I don't think it's crazy, really
It’s MacPhail not being totally wild on trading Roberts and if he’s going to, asking for a bountiful return. I think MacPhail, perhaps, doesn’t even love the idea of Carmona and Cabrera for Roberts, but threw it out as something he’d take, probably knowing full well the Indians would say, “Is you crazy?”
Of course I could just be inventing a scenario to entertain myself.

Yeah, this seems like an Ervin Santana situation to me
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

Huff and Scott
I would trade either for Marshall straight up in a heartbeat.
The only team Asdrubal Cabrera could hit against was us. I saw nothing there I wanted. Carmona can be part of deal but that would be a starting point only. You need an off season like he had or he would be untouchable otherwise. Still unless I get two legit young players and some depth just sign Roberts. He has only been on the market a year and its clear no one will pay the piper apparently.
I would listen if the White Sox offered Clayton Richard and Aaron Poreda.
Of course, if the Dodgers want to offer Matt Kemp straight up I am listening….lol.
I'm a BCB'er
and you all should no that this trade offer was not greeted all that warmly by all. While I and most Cubs fans would love to see Huff and Scott in blue pinstripes next year, most of us realize that it would take more than that pile of failed prospects to get those two. Someone on BCB also thought we could get Roberts AND Markakis for some pretty mediocre package. There’s a whole lot of stupid out there and it’s not worth taking it too seriously.
