Free Agent Starting Pitchers
As I mentioned in a comment elsewhere, and as Andy MacPhail has stated, the Orioles need to sign some starting pitching this off season. The pitching prospects in the minors look good, but they're not ready yet and some of them probably never will be. Aside from Jeremy Guthrie the team has no legitimate starters. So here is a list of all free agent pitchers this year, and I've included if they are a type A.
- Kris Benson
- A.J. Burnett (A)
- Paul Byrd
- Shawn Chacon
- Matt Clement
- Bartolo Colon
- Ryan Dempster (A)
- Shawn Estes
- Josh Fogg
- Freddy Garcia
- Jon Garland
- Tom Glavine
- Mike Hampton
- Mark Hendrickson
- Livan Hernandez
- Orlando Hernandez
- Jason Jennings
- Randy Johnson
- Byun-Hyun Kim
- Jon Lieber
- Esteban Loaiza
- Braden Looper
- Derek Lowe (A)
- Greg Maddux
- Pedro Martinez
- Jamie Moyer (A)
- Mark Mulder
- Mike Mussina (A)
- Russ Ortiz
- John Patterson
- Carl Pavano
- Andy Pettitte (A)
- Brad Penny
- Odalis Perez
- Oliver Perez (A)
- Sidney Ponson
- Mark Prior
- C.C. Sabathia (A)
- Curt Schilling
- Ben Sheets (A)
- John Smoltz
- Steve Traschel
- Kip Wells
- Randy Wolf
- Jamey Wright
I know some on that list are probably retiring (Schilling, Maddux) or really should retire (Traschel) but that is the entire FA list from here and here
So whaddya think? Who should we go after? Who should we avoid?

Nice work
Type A is technically irrelevant for us, right? As our pick is protected.
I’ve put myself on the record as wanting Jon Garland. He’s completely mediocre, but he’s 29 and should not be inexpensive.
I’ll start the soundoff on the big NO to AJ Burnett. Have no interest in this overrated pitcher.
There’s lots of ancient pitchers on this list, some of them can still be good, but would any of them want to play for Baltimore?

??
regarding Garland – did you mean not be expensive?? i’m not sure i want an expensive mediocre pitcher.
as for Burnett – overrated is a bit of a stretch – it all relates to price – he tends to go pretty deep into games which would make our bullpen better, and has a better chance striking out people in a jam than garland.

Garland, I definitely meant should not be expensive.
Burnett declined a 24 million dollar 2 year option. That means he’s looking for a really big contract, and he’s 31 years old. He had an average season last year (ERA 4.07 with one of the best defenses in baseball behind him). It was actually his worst season since 2003. And except for his contract year, he’s often missed games due to injury.
He’s considered one of the biggest money FA’s in this class. Definitely overrated.

If I understand correctly
and it’s entirely possible that I don’t, if the O’s sign a type A (provided his other team offered arbitration and it was declined) they give up their 2nd round pick. Normally it’d be the first round, but picks 1-15 are protected.

i believe you are correct
The Orioles would lose their second round pick for any Type A signed.

i think...
they’d lose a 2nd and 3rd, as opposed to a 1st and 2nd, but i may be wrong

Jon Garland is going to be expensive.
He should be looking at Lohse/Silva money.
This.

hmmm...
i think guys like colon and john patterson and freddy garcia are potentially interesting risk;/reward types, but no one here (that’s a realistic acquisition) really excites me.
everybody see that mitre got picked up by the yanks?
i think the best opportunity for the o’s comes at the non-tender deadline. i don’t really know who other teams are looking to non-tender, though, i imagine that’s the fate of danny cabs. is burres arb eligible?

Oliver Perez
I like Ollie Perez, though I can’t imagine any pitcher that I would want would want to play for the Orioles. Hell, I’m not sure I’d want to play for the Orioles.
And, WTF, no mention of Ponson?

- Yes, the Indians like Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts, but Shapiro isn’t going to give up Fausto Carmona and Asdrubal Cabrera to get him. If the Orioles lower their asking price, Shapiro is willing to talk.
Hilarious. Go get em Andy.

Actually
I’d want another player thrown in the deal. Those aren’t enough, especially for a proven MLB star

Tulo is a different case
it’s easier for SS to come back from injuries, but pitchers are dicey. Carmona could come back and have a brilliant career, or the injury could be his downfall. I’ll take the chance on Tulo, not Carmona.

Fuck'n A trade
Billy Beane at his best, traded Harden before he succumbs to an inevitable injury and traded Joe Blanton before he starts to really suck, and now this. The A’s are clearly the second best team in the AL West now, and might give the Angels a little run for their money in threepeating as AL West champs.
Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words—"mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind.

i dunno...
we can talk about the al west once texas deals w/ their glut of catchers. i mean, as much as i say the o’s could take a huge leap w/ a couple average pitchers….yeesh. the rangers scored 900 runs and fisnihed below .500!!!
the closest a regular started was to posting a 100 or better ERA + was the 92 by vicente padilla (though fat sid posted 112 in 9 starts).

Mussina
I’d rather have him over Burnett. He’d be cheaper, more reliable, and could maybe teach our pitchers not to lead the majors in BB/G and be last in K/G.
Curt never met a buttered roll he didn't like.
by CoachOfEarl on Nov 8, 2008 12:25 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
I’d love to bring Mussina back. But I really don’t like that he is a type A free agent. I’m not sure he’s really worth losing a 2nd round pick over.
I’m a little disapointed at this list of free agent pitchers. I was hoping there would be more innings-eaters that weren’t type A or B free agents. Unfortunately the only one I really see if Paul Byrd. I think he’d be a nice one year stop gap pitcher. Then maybe I’d consider signing a one or two of the injuried guys to a cheap contract and hope they pan out.
It would also be useful to look at signing or trading for another Jeremy Guthrie type player. A former top prospect that could use a change of scenery.

I too like Mussina and Jamie Moyer
the best from that list. Each could be placeholders until the system starts turning out major league pitching.
However I also agree that I’m not convinced it is worth losing a 2nd round draft pick. At this point it is far ore important to continue building the organization than it is to make modest upgrades to the major league franchise.

Pitching or franchise player
The only two years that Burnett has been "completely healthy" are the two years he has been eligible to hit the free agent market. Just saying….
Five years at 17 mill is a lot of risk just to have someone pitch….when your not ready to compete.
Why not throw out incentive based contracts to guys like: Pavano, Colon, Looper, Freddie Garcia, Pedro Martinez, B Penny, Mark Mulder?
Burnett just seems like a huge risk at this stage. If he blows up you basically shot a big wad and will limit yourself going forward. I would rather offer Tex a 7 year deal at 21.5 and see if that gets his attention.

I think the Rockies won the deal
I thought the “prize” of the Haren deal was Gonzalez.
So he’s gone. (six years)
Greg Smith goes. (five years)
H. Smith (likely traded for two prospects by the Rox)
13.5 in salary to A’s
A’s get one year of Holiday or 4 months of Holliday and prospects or two picks
I would have liked the deal better for the A’s if I thought they had a better chance to win in 2009, just think its a year early for them but as I have said you think always about two teams-the one you put on field each year and your foundation team. BB needed to sell some tickets in 2009 and sell his new ballpark.
