Orioles Working To Trade Daniel Cabrera *updated*
From mlbtraderumors.com :
The Orioles do not want to pay Daniel Cabrera's $4MMish salary in 2009, that much is certain. Peter Schmuck of the Baltimore Sun says Andy MacPhail is trying to trade Cabrera, and otherwise he'll be non-tendered.
It goes on to say that last year his strikeout rate was down and he lost a couple mph on his fastball. Of course that has something to do with him throwing a different fastball to help his control (remember those days? man he was good for a few weeks...) but who needs facts?
Anyway, the part I found amusing was how many fans of other teams actually want Dcabs. Check it out. It's amazing.

DCabs apparently is gone. No trade, no nothing. Just non-tendered. Check it out here. Also, we apparently signed catcher Chad Moeller to a minor league deal with a spring training invite. Exciting! Honestly, he's a good backup backup.

Is there even a slim chance...
…that we wind up with a useful player for DCabs? Really? Is that possible?
If MacPhail pulls that off…well, all I’m saying is, are we sure he couldn’t walk across the Bay?

Daniel non-tendered?
Wow. I didn’t believe it would happen. Best of luck to him. I don’t think he’ll get it together, but I hope that he does. He always seemed like a good kid.

The guy wasn't even raised on the game
Had to be difficult to learn all the subtle nuances in such a short time.

Leo Mazzone on XX radio
Said the same thing. He didn’t start pitching until late in life. He also said it was ridiculous that the O’s tried to turn him into a sinkerball pitcher last season.

I mean
It’s not as if he was capable of throwing the heat anymore. Hardly ridiculous as attempting to salvage his career.

He will end up somewhere
Over the past two years, Daniel has developed the mythical ability to pitch into 5th or 6th inning while slowly giving up 4 or 5 runs. He creates the illusion that hes keeping the club in the game and started to build a rep as an innings eater. The number of times in which hes flat out imploded in his new sissy throwing form has been surprising little. Thats why I think hes gonna be around for a long, long time. There are a lot of bad teams out there that need the back end of their rotation to be filled out. First things first though, he needs to get the hell out of the AL East. I could actually see him having some success in the NL and the right ballpark.

And take Lance Cormier with you
Good luck down the road in the NL.
The Yankees get Sabathia, the Mets get K-rod, and the Orioles get Ryan Freel.

Who is better than DCabs?
Other than Guthrie, of course. Seriously, at least the guy could throw you 200 innings. Granted not particularly good. But they were exciting. For the other team, usually. But exciting nonetheless.
Whatever, he’s not very good, but better than what we have. Which is why we kinda suck and all.

I could throw 200 innings
if you left me out there for 200 innings. Just because he managed to throw 200 innings without being hurt doesn’t mean he was having a positive benefit for the club.
What were we getting for those 200 innings? He was becoming a taller, faster version of Steve Trachsel. Velocity was done at the end of the year (there were nights he didn’t hit 94, remember?) and for a guy who lives and dies by his fastball, that’s a problem.
At this point, I’m not so sure he is better than what we have, especially with his recent regression.

I'd take the minimum....
but they would have to throw in a new Buick every year! ;)

but who is better?
Of course Cabrera isn’t any great shakes, but who is better than him, besides Guthrie? Do we really want Brian Bass or Chris Waters pitching for us? Do you honestly believe that these career minor leaguers can throw 200 innings with an ERA under 6? there are good “innings eaters” and bad ones. And then there are horrible ones. I’d bet dollars to donuts that he is a bad one, and he’ll be replaced by a horrible one. But he’ll be picked up by a better team than the Orioles.
I wish him well, he’s probably beyond excited to leave Baltimore. Lord knows I would be.

This may sound overly dramatic
But I think this is a huge thing for the Orioles. To be honest, I was a little sad when I heard this news. Good or bad, Daniel Cabrera had been part of the Orioles organization for a long time. Only Brian Roberts and Melvin Mora have had a longer tenure. Daniel was finished as an Oriole. Maybe he can get his act together somewhere else (you know there are a number of teams who will give him a shot), but I believe he would have never succeeded in Baltimore.
I think the “but who’s going to pitch for us?” and “where will we find those 200 innings?” thoughts are valid. I especially feel bad for Jeremy Guthrie who has got to be sitting at home thinking WTF? Daniel Cabrera was awful last year and he was still our second best starting pitcher (no, I don’t count Chris Waters). I also think those types of thoughts are part of what has kept this team down for so many years because they forced people like Mike Flanagan to settle for less. Andy MacPhail refuses to settle for less. It’s scary not knowing what is ahead, not knowing who will pitch day two. But I’ve made a decision to have faith in Andy MacPhail. It appears that everything Andy MacPhail does is part of a plan and with future moves in mind. So even if I can’t quite see what he has in store, I trust it’s the best for us.

I agree Stacey....
The pitching situation is not only scary but its gonna be rough. But, Andy has built winners before and he did a great job with the Twins. If the O’s can build a system like the Twins and then have more money to spend on FA’s when the time is right this franchise could turn into a huge winner in the future.
That being said, I am looking for some progress in the next couple of years. The O’s just can’t keep promising the future and not deliver something along the way in progress or Andy won’t be here long enough to see his plan through. That would really be a disaster for the O’s.

Its always a shame
when a guy comes through your system (rushed dramatically) and shows some skills but it doesnt materialize.
Again, I trust Andy has reviewed the obvious. Maybe his arm problems raised a bigger flag. But I think it really boiled down does it matter if Brian Burress and Chris Waters pitch Daniel’s innings on a team that will lose 90 games? The answer is obviously no. I think Andy said I can either save those dollars or employ them more efficiently.
And this is also a fair thing for Daniel. It gives him one year to establish some value in a new environment. Good luck Danny!
