So Long, And Thanks For All The Fish, Danny
Daniel Cabrera was indeed non-tendered by the Orioles yesterday, making him a free agent in a year he was eligible for arbitration.
He wasn't alone. From MLB.com, here's the official list of non-tendered members of their team's 40-man roster:
Astros
Ty Wigginton, 3B; Reggie Abercrombie OF.
Braves
Chuck James, LHP.
Brewers
Chris Capuano, LHP.
Cardinals
Randy Flores, LHP; Tyler Johnson, LHP; Aaron Miles, 2B.
Diamondbacks
Chris Burke, INF; Robby Hammock, C; Wil Ledezma, LHP; Jeff Salazar, OF.
Dodgers
Mario Alvarez, RHP; Angel Berroa, SS; Yhency Brazoban, RHP; Scott Proctor, RHP; Takashi Saito, RHP.
Mariners
Jamie Burke, C.
Marlins
Joe Nelson, RHP.
Nationals
Tim Redding, RHP.
Orioles
Daniel Cabrera, RHP; Lance Cormier RHP.
Padres
Clay Hensley, RHP; Charlie Haeger, RHP.
Phillies

Rockies

Anyone want to go shopping? Any names look appealing?
Comments
Chris Britton!
Ha just kidding. We could add Angel Berroa to our list of crappy SS’s though…

hmmmm
WIth Danny Cabs gone, I would imagine the Orioles HAVE to go after another pitcher. With that being said (and doing no research on their price), Tim Redding? Chris Capuano? I would go after Chuck James, I don’t know the extent of his injuries but he might be able to rebound.
And how the f*** did Ty Wigginton get non-tendered? Must have some serious payroll constraints there.

Ty Wiggington non-tendered? Now there is one that the O's...
might be interested in. I am really surprised that he is non-tendered……. strange……

He's 30 and replacement level
.790 OPS, and below average with the glove…at 3B, that don’t cut it.
And he wouldn’t be an improvement for us
He’s got an awesome db name though: wiggity01
The Yankees get Sabathia, the Mets get K-rod, and the Orioles get Ryan Freel.

thanks for the stats.... :)
I remember they were pretty high on him at one time…. but so much for the idea of a back up infielder for the O’s… forget it….. not with those stats.

Wiggington
And, to a lesser extent, Capuano.

Joe Nelson (FLA)
and
Reggie Abercrombie (HOU)
Would be two I would look at. Definitely Nelson, maybe Reggie.

Joe Nelson
Here is what I dont get-is he really any worse then Kyle Farnsworth? I actually wanted to sign Farnsworth but I was thinking 2 mill at most. Dayton Moore has a lot of Wayne Krivsky in him. One step up, two steps back.
That contract strikes me as the first candidate for the Carlos Silva/Gary Mathews, Jr award? Of course, I think it should have to be for 20 million or more but I dont get this one. Even if it works its just a stupid use of resources.

Saito does not interest me
because he is 39 and coming off surgery. I doubt he’ll have trouble finding work, though. Wigginton surprises me, too. Seems like only yesterday (2006) that him and Mora shared time at 3B for my last place fantasy team.

Really?
I see signing him as a good start to getting other import players. Since he’s hurt and represented by B-Rob’s agent, maybe he’d be will to sign a one-year to prove he’s healthy. I don’t know. I’m just throwing it out there.

Thinking the same thing
of course LA doesnt think that way, they already have crossed that bridge in terms of imports long ago. So they look at it from the risk/reward and I guess they figure lets see if anyone else steps up.

I guess I'm short-sighted
I hadn’t considered that angle. I singled the guy out from that list because he’s pretty good, but then I found out his age and that he had surgery last season. I suppose he’s perfect for the O’s after all. Seriously, though, if the import thing had even a minimal impact, then it’d be worth a look. I just don’t know if such a connection would actually yield anything.

Capuano
I would jump on this guy like yesterday. His hit rate and ERA have been climbing, but he’s got a really good K and BB rates. Huge improvement over DC.
The Yankees get Sabathia, the Mets get K-rod, and the Orioles get Ryan Freel.

I think he is out to mid 2009
so I would want at least a two year deal or your just spitting into the wind, kind of like the Florida pitcher that signed with Yanks as well, dont recall the name.

When Cabrera was on, he was non stoppable. The thing was he was on about 2 starts a year. He was a carbon copy of Sidney Ponson. A hard thrower but no way was able to put it together for quality starts. So long Cabrera. Dont let the door hit ya where the good lord split ya, lol.

Lance Cormier
Guy had a solid first half of the season, and solid in September. July and August sucked for him, but they sucked for everybody.
I guess it depends on how the rest of the bullpen is shaping up, but I don’t see Cormier as a guy to give up on. We need all the pitching help we can get.
