Around SBN: Explaining Jeremy Lin's Early, Surprising Success

Teixeira recalled, "[The Red Sox] treated us very poorly. It's something I tell high school kids who are going to be drafted that you've got to be ready for the business. Unfortunately, that's the way we were treated after I got drafted, and that's the reason I didn't sign with the Red Sox. We never sought or asked for an apology, but like I said, it was the best thing that ever happened to me."

yeah, but

the article then goes on to list his glowing feelings of affection for the current Sox management team.

That being said, if the rumors of him being at the Ravens game turn out to be true, I will lose my shit. It will make watching the game at a sports bar with my 3 of my friends who are rabid Steelers fans…almost bearable.

"The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again."

Yeah

These Tex rumors are now running rampant. Roy Firestone at Orioles Hangout suggested that the O’s may be offering 9/180 or 10/200, and you’d expect Angelos/MacPhail to make a move soon as the Angels just put their money on the table. To me, Tex being at the Ravens game means that Tex is sweetening up to Angelos in case his offer is big enough.

My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

10/200 is the magic number, I think

If Boras can get that, he’ll get Tex to take it, regardless of the team. That’s the number they first floated, and that’s the number Boras is desperate to get. If BOS or MFY offer any less than 10/200 and the O’s go 10/200, we have ourselves a new 1B.

This is probably really dumb but....

that’s not the same Roy Firestone that used to be on ESPN, is it?

by Chanumas on Dec 15, 2008 8:56 AM EST up reply actions

yup, it is.

He was the O’s spring training bat boy or something growing up. Huge, huge fan of the team. He’s been posting on OH, just as a fan, not a journalist for a couple of years. A friend of mine who is a regular over there has met him at some of their get-togethers, he’s apparently a really nice guy.

He did, apparently get burned on this rumor, though.

Although I believe he has good intentions

People buy into what he says far too much. Roy was merely reporting what he had heard, and people jumped on him after it was revealed that Angelos wasn’t at the game. It’s still a bit hazy, but as it stands right now, Tex/PA were not in the MASN suite together.

That's

how I’m feeling. If you’re not signing here, go to an NL team, I say.

That was a long time ago

Different owners, different managers, different players. Boras wanted Tex to go to Boston so as to put the Yankees on the ropes.

I'll slightly disagree

Boras wants Tex to go to the most money – period. A-Rod’s first BIG contract showed that – everyone knew the Rangers didn’t have any pitching, yet they put up the most $$$ and to Texas he went.

He let Wieters sign with Baltimore, didn’t he? He had the option of returning to Ga Tech – but Boras (probably rightly) assumed this was the best Wieters was going to do $$$ wise.

Tex will go wherever the most money is, if Boras has anything to do with it.

the Wieters deal...

was a big step in Boras having a new and friendly relationship with Peter Angelos after years of them not really working together too much. It helps, not just with Tex but with any of Boras’ clients, to have the O’s on a list of teams Boras feels he can work with. Which is code for “teams Boras feels he can juice.”

Money

Boras wants Tex to follow the money, because that’s a bigger % for him, no?

by blawk359 on Dec 14, 2008 9:26 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed

When you pick Boras as an agent, you’re NOT picking a team because the city has a good school system.

Ambivalent

I am ambivalent about mortgaging the ranch to sign Tex. We will be in 5th with or without him next year. Our minor league system now has pitching prospects, but-Weiters aside-no blue chip position prospects. The best position players we can come up with are Reimold, Snyder, Rowell, and Montanez. Reimold is now old, and if AF thought he was a winner, he would not have signed Freel. Snyder has a suspect glove and limited power for First Base. Rowell looks like a bust. Montanez is also old. So, my instinct would be to trade Roberts and Huff and add prospects. If we draft wisely, maybe we can compete in 2011 or 2012. On the other hand, we don’t have a legit First Base prospect in the organization. So, Tex would be a corner stone to build around. The imponderable is what needed steps the Orioles would not take (better international scouting, better domestic scouting, and better minor league instruction) if so much of the club’s money is tied up on one player. We need more prospects to compete down the road.

get serious peter

if our crappy owner would just step up and offer mark something legit he would be an oriole for sure. lets make up for the albert belle tradegy and get a great player back in birdland. our offense is very potent, locking up mark would allow us to develop the young pitching like liz and olsen with some money available in a year or so to sign a nice free agent starter to solidify a starting rotation.

show him the money

Different ownership group now

If Boston offers him the most money, that’s where he’ll end up

by oriolez on Dec 15, 2008 3:20 PM EST reply actions

That's true

But ONLY if Boston offers the most cash – hopefully. I still have a sinking feeling if it’s close, maybe Boras does steer him to BOS if both are offering at least 10/200,

Best thing that ever happened to him?

He thinks the best thing that ever happened to him was signing with the Rangers rather than the Red Sox?

Huh, I might call that the other way.

I’ve read a few profiles of him and he comes across as sort precious, whiny, and high-maintenance. Not that that should preclude the Orioles from signing him.
