Calling all Sarasotans

The Orioles are in talks with the city and county of Sarasota to relocate their Spring Training home.  In addition to reuniting the O’s with their minor league operations (very important), Cal Ripken will create a youth baseball academy there.  It’s good for the team and good for Sarasota.

There is a critical vote of the Sarasota County Commission on Wednesday, December 17, where the 5-member commission will consider the package.

A good article is here:

However, some of the commissioners are getting squirrely and need to hear from Florida O’s fans who support the team.

If you live in Sarasota or have family/friends there and want to help the O’s consolidate their ST operations --- in one of the best parts of Florida --- please take a moment and contact the County Commissioners to let them know how you feel.

These are the five people who will decide the fate of the O’s Spring Training:

Here are their email addresses:  (Patterson, Thaxton, Barbetta are wavering and need to hear from citizens)

Be respectful, but let them know!

I was just there last week...

…and it’s truly a beautiful place. Nice town, friendly people, great beaches, good restaurants and a surprising amount of culture for an area that size.

The only problem with this move for me though is that Sarasota’s located where it is, which is kind of isolated from where I prefer to be in Florida. South Florida just has much more to offer from a tourist’s point of view and I enjoy going to Lauderdale and having so much else nearby as opposed to being up in Sarasota….even though Sarasota is admittedly nicer in and of itself.

I spend a fair amount of time in Bonita Springs

which is 100 miles south, but when I am there in March, I will visit Sarasota. Thanks for the heads up.
