BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox may be close to signing Mark Teixeira, the premiere free agent available this off-season.
SportsCenter 5's Mike Lynch reported that team owner John Henry, CEO Larry Lucchino and General Manager Theo Epstein were in Texas Thursday evening meeting with Teixeira's agent Scott Boras.
Lynch reported the Red Sox were offering an eight-year contract with an annual salary of $23 million.

UPDATE: John Henry emailed the following to the media tonight: "We met with Mr. Teixeira and were very much impressed with him. After hearing about his other offers, however, it seems clear that we are not going to be a factor."

"It seems clear". Not, "we are dropping out."

Stay tuned....

He’s doing his best to avoid a bidding war. He waiting until he thinks all teams have made their final bids, he’ll then raise his bid and hope that Tex takes a hometown discount.

its time to be smart

Take a deep breath and save our powder for the deals that are going to present themselves down the road….and maintain payroll flexibility.

Of course, I am more concerned that this means a very likely trade of Brian Roberts.

by sanders833 on Dec 18, 2008 7:53 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I agree its time to save our powder for deals that help us.

Bringing Tex to the O’s would’ve achieved what? Would the O’s moved out of last place? Maybe, maybe not. Would they have made .500 if he came to Baltimore? Probably not. There are other holes to fill first.

Boston, if true, is, in my opinion paying way too much for Tex. The O’s do not need to be saddled with this type of contract while they rebuild. It could in the long run hamper future efforts to grab a couple of big FAs when they have a chance to do so and actually make the post-season.

I like Brian Roberts and hope they don’t trade him. But, if the O’s do, I hope they get what they need to make the team more solid and more competitive. It takes time and losing sucks. But in the end Andy will get this team turned around and this will all be a distant memory. I can’t wait till that time comes…..

Can we lose that analogy?

As a liberal Dem, the jokes about “keeping our powder dry” by Congressional Dems as Bush did his best to railroad through every deruglation law and no-bid contract he could got really old. Every time I see that phrase, I see Nancy Pelosi saying “Impeachment’s off the tabel” and I want to hurt myself again.

Even in 2000 years, some things never change

From the BBC miniseries I, Claudius…

Claudius: G-G-Grandmother, they’ve decided!

Livia: And?

C: They’ve voted to g-g-give Uncle Tiberius all of Grandfather’s titles – and his emergency powers.

L: You heard this yourself?

C: Well, f-f-from the steps. They wouldn’t let me inside.

L: No. They won’t let you inside because you’re a fool and they won’t let me inside because I’m a woman. Which is strange when you think about it, because the Senate is full of nothing but fools and old women.

You can't fix stupid. Stupid is forever.

I am crying inside but 23 million is way to much in my opinion, still the Redsox are thinking that last big contract to Manny brought home two titles.

I am more concerned that the Yanks will offer the Padres something like Kennedy, Hughes and something for Adrian Gonzalez and then we are really going to be more then crying….

Sure it's too much

but it’s what the market will bear.

We’re not dealing with what SHOULD baseball players make, we are dealing with what they DO make. And if someone’s willing to pay Tex $23M a year, then that’s his worth.

We need to stop bitching about labor costs and get players who will help this team WIN. And they won’t always be bargain priced minor-leaguers like the Bedard trade. Are the O’s in the big leagues or not?

We met with Mr. Teixeira and were very much impressed with him. After hearing about his other offers, however, it seems clear that we are not going to be a factor.

Boras is looking for 10 years, $200M. He told the Sox he has an offer either close that amount or the mark. This is probably a lie although I suppose the Nats could be desparate enough to offer to 10 years, $200M. Boras tell the RS to man up their offer. John Henry says no and releases the above statement. This ain’t over by a long shot. The RS are still very much in it.

I think teams are pretty much done dealing with Boras. The offers are on the table and Teixeira has to decide. Boras wants some desperate team to just escalate the payout. At least the Red Sox seem to be publicly putting their foot down. They aren’t out of the running, I think the ball is now it Teixeria’s court.

He’s a great player, but he doesn’t fill a need at a position PHN can put him. Doing the Youk shuffle doesn’t make a lot of sense. Tex is a +6WAR player, but not above their current 1B. And that much money, for that long of a contract, it’s gonna take a rich fool to get him. Which leaves…everyone else.

We could spend this money and SERIOUSLY upgrade the pitching staff. I said I have no plan.

I don’t memorize or give a shit about other teams farm systems and prospects. That’s why they pay the front office tons o’ cash to make these decisions. I was simply illustrating the point that shelling out over $20M for one player for one year is borderline insane. Our primary needs are on the pitching staff, and we still have yet to make a move with that. Everyone is so damn worried about where Marky Mark and the Boras Bunch are going to take their services that we have forgotten how much our pitching sucks. So, oh wise Mr. Duck, forgive me for not outlining the next 5 years of the franchise. I will think twice before insulting you with my stupidity in the future.

WHAT ain't no country I ever heard of. Do they speak english in WHAT?

by sickuvitall on Dec 19, 2008 2:15 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

My point is this

It’s easy to say “Sign some pitchers!” But pitchers have to be available for them to be signed. And my point is, they aren’t there.

Tex is AVAILABLE. He is a marked upgrade for our offense. Yes, he’s expensive – really good players are. They don’t sell BMW’s for $19,000 new, either.

So, you can sign him. Or you can sign the Dany Baez’s of the world like we’ve been doing for the last 11 years. Because nobody – nobody – gives up good young pitching in any quantity.

And even if they do, signing Mark does NOT impede our ability to develop our own pitchers. What was Wieters’ bonus – $6 mil? That’s 2 months of Tex. We’ve committed to signing our high draft picks – our latst two drafts have shown that. We aren’t suddenly going to stop shelling out a few million for high picks because Tex is here. Ohhh, we can’t afford it? Bullshit, and we all know it, and PGA knows we know it.

It’s not an either/or position with Tex and pitching. You can sign him AND get good young pitching, at least what’s available.

What we CAN’T afford is more overpriced mediocre (or worse) pitching, like we’ve been doing for the last 10 years.

Duck Around - a progressive blog about the Eastern Shore of Maryland. And getting off my lawn.

by duck on Dec 19, 2008 4:36 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

I do agree with you

in regards to not signing morons like Baez anymore. I would love to sign Tex, I just don’t want to see his talents wasted on a team with no hurlers. If your analysis is correct, our only hope is to develop our own pitching and hope that someone comes available in the next few years to round out the staff.

I am not terribly objected to Lowe, his groundball style would work in OPACY. I tend to lean away from the mediocrity that you speak of…the Garlands and Reddings of the world. I think that at some point we need to make a splash in the rotation.

Our minor league contingency will produce in the future. I can see Matusz and Tillman on the front-end, Arrietta being the biggest question mark in my eyes. I talked with him in Frederick quite a few times last year…I just don’t know about his physical durability, he is not the imposing figure that the others are. We will see though, but each of them is 2 years away from contributing to the big club.

Tim Lincecum isn't exactly a huge dude, either

It’s all about the ability to throw strikes on a repeated basis, and have them not go over the wall. Billy Wagner is 5’9" on a good day, and made quite the career for himself.

Wagner is a reliever

who has been good when healthy, but rather injury prone. Lincecum is nice now, but we will see how long that bionic arm lasts. He appears to put alot of effort into each throw, that shit can’t last. I hope for the best for Arrietta, I just worry about the durability factor.

It appears that my eyes were playing tricks on me last year.

When I was standing next to him (being that I am Billy Wagner in height), he really didn’t seem much taller than myself. However, my Frederick Arrietta card lists him at a stoudt 6’4’’ and 225. That can’t be entirely correct, but he certainly is bigger than I originally thought. I guess standing on the mound next to Mr. Wieters will dwarf many a pitcher. My bad on the assumptions…

They can block a discount deal yanno. From the WEEI article

Ultimately, it was the MLB Players’ Association, rather than Boras, that refused to let Rodriguez sacrifice $28 million in salary over the final seven years of the contract.

The Yankees get Sabathia, the Mets get K-rod, and the Orioles get Ryan Freel.

Yes, and no

The A-Rod situation was one in which he had a pre-existing contract that he wanted to lop down to facilitate a trade. If Tex signs a $175 MM deal instead of a $190 MM deal, they’re not going to intervene.

Didn't Moose get into trouble

with them when he took a hometown discount to stay in Baltimore?

People said bad, bad things about him.

That was it.

I think the Angels

have the “best” offer on the table and I think Tex wants to be on East Coast. The Nats are out there with a contract but consider Tex in the Nats lineup. He might not even knock in a 100 and even with an out clause his next three years would be hell. He already had a taste of “empty stats” in Texas and lets face it, he is going to be filthy rich whereever he signs.

So Boras is either saying beat the Nats or beat the Angels. I think Ken R. has a blurb saying through Torii Hunter that the Angels “overwhelmed” Tex. Overwhelmed means 200m in my ear.

John Henry just called the pot…. and Scott and Tex are huddled and Scott just passed the cell over to Mark and said we got John Henry as far as we could…..you call him and make nice.

I actually want the Red Sox to get Tex and throw a big fixed cost contract into their payroll. Lets face it in two years the Yanks and Boston overspending may just be a problem. Again, if our young pitching comes on I dont care if they have Tex. There I said it…..
