Red Sox "are not going to be a factor" in Teixeira bidding
Red Sox owner John Henry said:
"We met with Mr. Teixeira and were very much impressed with him. After hearing about his other offers, however, it seems clear that we are not going to be a factor."
Is this a bluff? If not, the question is who outbid the sox? It seems to me that it would point more away from the O's and nats and probably more towards the halos and maybe even the Yanks, but i'm just guessing on that. Regardless, it sounds (please let it be true) like he wont be a red sock, which makes me warm inside. Merry xmas everyone!

Well, if Mr. Henry isn't straight up bullshitting...
That sure does sound nice.
"The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again."
okay, let’s look at it this way…
the teams that have offered teix a contract are? the orioles (most important, of course), the gnats, the angels, and the sox… 2 of these 4 teams are not contenders, well by most people’s standards… so this would leave the red sox and angels.. if teixeira really desires a winning team over his home team which for the sake of this comment we’ll say he does.. the gnats and o’s are out… everyone knows he wants to play on the east coast so it’s not likely he signs with the angels.. this leaves him not much of a choice but the sox, and with the sox owner saying this, it’s more than likely going to make mr. boras drop his price if teixeira wants to play on an east coast contender.
What up?
I bet he ends up w/ the Yankees
Makes too much sense for the Yankees to sign him, yes they already spent mad loot on FA’s this offseason, but if they sign Teixeira and keep him away from the Sox, that basically makes the Sox almost a non-factor in ’09. Henry could just be bullshittin though, the Sox need Teixeira more than any of the other teams going after him
Uhh... nooo...
Red Sox a “non-factor” in 09 if they don’t have Tex? Are you on crack?
Their line-up is fine if it is healthy. If Ortiz comes back swinging a clutch stick, then they still have their whole line-up intact from last year (Varitek was offensively garbage so I don’t count him). They still have the same staff, the same pen, and basically the same line-up that got them to the playoffs (and most of the year was without Ortiz).
Angels
Sorry to double post here, but I forgot this note.
Take a good look at the Angels line-up with Tex and without Tex:
With Tex: Solid middle with run producing from Tex and Vlad
Without Tex: Vlad stands alone in a mediocre line-up with no protection
As I said before, the Sox won without their best hitter. The Angels limped through a weak division, but they need Tex in order to put a playoff line-up together. Even then, they still are over-matched.
I think the Yanks are a little concerned
about payroll (ROFL) but I think the debt service and econony have even them reaching limits. If you read the NY papers they already think the Yanks are in future payroll trouble.
yeah i think genius steinbrenner just realized the economy is a shit hole.
