O's, Ponson settle without arbitration
Fat Sid and the Orioles avoided arbitration and settled their three-year dispute today. Sir Tubby had been seeking $11.2M in uncollected salary. Terms were not released.

I am out of touch with the situation.
Can anyone elaborate on why we are still involved in any way with the round mound of Arubian pound (cake)??

three years ago,
we terminated his contract, on which we owed something like $10M, for “conduct unbecoming of a player” or something like that. Sidney had been arrested three times that year, and the Orioles were sick of the off-field antics (he also was stinking it up as a pitcher).
Ponson filed a grievance with the players’ association to recover the entire salary. The grievance was postponed over and over and then was scheduled for arbitration. This settlement that avoided that arbitration.

I sincerely doubt it.
I think the Orioles had a very strong case. But since arb meant all-or-nothing for both parties, it was in the interests of both to settle. I’m betting they met somewhere in the middle or below it, since Sidney has had a few different contracts since then.

I'm betting MLBPA pushed for a settlement
the LAST thing the wanted was an arbitrer (sp?) to rule that a club had a right to do this. So I’m betting the union lawyers told Fat Sid to take whatever PGA offered to make sure there was no chance of a arb dude saying a MLB team could terminate a contract for any cause.

Is Ponson signed by anyone for this year?
I have to say, it’s some pretty good comedy that the Yankees keep thinking of him as a solution.
