According to multiple sources, the Washington Nationals have sweetened their proposal to first baseman Mark Teixeira, offering him an eight-year deal worth $178 to $184 million.

The Nats were believed to have an eight-year, $160 million offer on the table. They apparently have increased the total value, putting them ahead of the other contenders, based on the numbers that have been reported.

I'm also told that they're willing to go nine years - and there's been talk of 10 - which could be one reason why agent Scott Boras is dragging along negotiations.

I can

understand wanting security and all but he’s never going to win there. Why wouldn’t a player of his age look for a 3-4 year deal and another big payday? He may not win in 10 years with the O’s either but I think they are at least taking steps to improve the club. The Nats are signing Daniel Cabrera…their last year’s O’s. They are even further away.

yep

I don’t blame the national media for lumping the O’s and Nats in the “hes never gonna win anything there” category. But you’re right, the Nats are the O’s of earlier this decade, its a barren wasteland there. At least the O’s have some light at the end of the tunnel. But if all these pitching prospects turn into Radhames Lizes and Garrett Olsons, then they’ll be in trouble. But at least theres hope!

Not everyone does

Baseball Prospectus made a pretty good case for the O’s being a great destination for Tex. It’s been mentioned in previous Tex threads.

Yeah, but

The Orioles need a much better core to compete in the AL East than the Nationals need in the NL East.

I’m not sure the O’s are better positioned to make the playoffs in the near future.

Put down the crack pipe, Nationals.

It’s the holidays. Think of the children.

"The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it's a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again."

The children need jerseys for warmth

Wilkerson, Guillen and Soriano jerseys were bad investments. The Gnats want to ensure that their Teixeira jersey is one they can wear for a while.

Let them have him

Baltimore is the Red Sox compared to Washington. Since MacPhail came on board the O’s have had a plan and have been implementing it with intelligence and purpose. The Nats have none of this. A ten year deal for Tex is a irresponsible. Let the Nats give him a ridiculous Arod like contract and then the O’s can try and pick him up in trade in 2011 and have DC eat a chunk of the contract. If DC wants to pay a 38 year old first baseman 21 million dollars in 2018, more power to them. I want Tex in Baltimore and I have no problem seeing them overpay a bit to get him. They may need to overpay to make up for the fact that Boston and LA are better markets, but a nine or ten year contract is ludicrous. Let him go to Washington and lose more than 900 games over the course of his contract if he wants. MacPhail can build a winner without him. The circus act in Washington will never even win 80 games with him.

Olney is saying it's imminent

Good, make a fucking decision already and lets get on to the rest of the FA market. I’m hoping the Nats get him, but I’m assuming it’ll be PHN.

Olney is making shit up, AGAIN.

I love reading the comment threads on his stories and Jon Heyman’s over at SI.com – even their readers are calling them out.

I guess he likes ESPN more than credibility.

It's hard watching the Nationals

Make so many bad moves. As has been noted, the Nats are the Orioles of 4-5 years ago, and those were some pretty bad times.

I understand that Tex wants the money, but Washington? Really?

I think Andy has handled this whole situation pretty well. He must’ve known that 140 wasn’t going to work, but he isn’t allowing himself to be used, nor will he spend an exorbitant amount of money on a 29 year old player. If MacPhail put something like 8/160 on the table, then he could say that he made a legitimate effort, but as it stands right now, I am VERY happy with the job he has done.

My best game plan is to sit on the bench and call out specific instructions like 'C'mon Boog,' 'Get ahold of one, Frank,' or 'Let's go, Brooks.' -Earl Weaver

O's hopes fading for Teixeira

(Baltimore Sun)

MacPhail told Boras that he and owner Peter Angelos would be willing to meet up with Teixeira again. However, it doesn’t appear that they’ll get the opportunity with multiple outlets reporting that Teixeiria’s decision is imminent.

“We’ve told them that’s not a problem,” MacPhail said. “If they get to a point where they want to have another sitdown, we’d be happy to do it.”

Okay, I get the point where you don’t want to be used as a pawn to raise the bidding for other teams, but jeez. Man up, dude. Put an offer out there. Or fly to Texas or something. You can’t be a wallflower in this situation.

I’m just saying.

Sounds like the Sox win

I just seen a story saying he was headed to Boston for a press conf. we shall see. Spend the money else where, would have been nice but plenty of fish in the sea.

Adam Dunn

by exitfare on Dec 23, 2008 1:44 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Nah

there’s no point in spending big money on a free agent this year. Tex was a special case because of his ties to the area, his youth, and his level of star quality. If he goes elsewhere, the O’s need to re-focus on the future.

Plug the holes with stopgaps and see what you can get for Huff and Roberts.

But how much is Dunn gonna cost?

Well, he won’t be free or super cheap, which it sort of seems like are the only options folks here will accept.
